St. Louis InternationalFilm Festival

Now in its 20th year, the Stella Artois St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF) is one of the largest international film festivals in the Midwest. This year’s SLIFF will be held Nov. 10-20, 2011.

Cinema St. Louis is a not-for-profit organization that emphasizes film as an art form. Its mission is to enhance cultural diversity by bringing Ameri-can independent productions, horizon-expanding international films and high-quality studio films to audiences before their commercial release. The majority of the more than 400 films screened will receive their only St. Louis exposure at the festival. SLIFF’s main venues are the Tivoli Theatre, Plaza Frontenac Cinema, Web-ster University’s Winifred Moore Auditorium, and Washington University’s Brown Hall Audito-rium. SLIFF showcases the best in cutting-edge features and shorts from around the globe.

SLIFF includes many special programs such as the free Cinema for Students program aimed at educators and stu-dents in grades 1 to 12. The films that make up the Cinema for Students program enhance and expand each student’s education by providing exposure to various aspects of science, history, language, music, theater, literature, and culture. Most programs are ac-companied by the filmmakers or the documentary subjects. Cinema for Students screenings are scheduled Monday, Nov. 14, through Friday, Nov. 18, at the Center of Creative Arts (COCA), Plaza Frontenac Cinema, Tivoli Theatre, and Sheldon Concert Hall.

For complete information on the St. Louis International Film Festival please visit their website at http://cinemastlouis.org/sliff-2011

DOCTOR’S ORDERS

David A. Dorsey, MD

what causes osteoarthritis? No one knows what causes joint cartilage to wear away; however, we do know that osteoarthritis is more common as you get older or if you are very overweight. Sometimes a serious knee injury can bring on ar-thritis after a few years.how is osteoarthritis diagnosed?Your doctor will ask you questions about your pain, perform an exam, may also order an X-ray of your knee to see what is causing the pain. Blood tests can help rule out other forms of arthritis.

how is osteoarthritis of the knee treated?• Rest your knee or avoid activities that make your pain worse.• Put ice on your knee for 20 to 30 minutes a few times a day to reduce

inflammation and ease the pain.• Take an over-the-counter medicine, such as acetaminophen (one

brand: Tylenol) or ibuprofen (one brand: Motrin; do not use if you have or have had a stomach ulcer).

• Physical therapy or certain exercises to help strengthen the muscles around the joint.

• Knee injections with pain medicine +/- a corticosteroid• Hyaluronic acid injections (people who have osteoarthritis, this acid

gets thinner and there isn’t protect the joint). These injections may help the pain stay away for 6 months to a year, sometimes longer. Unfortunately, these injections don’t help everyone.

Surgery, when conservative measures fail:• Arthroscopy is done with a small scope (or camera) inserted through

tiny cuts a surgeon makes in your knee. • Osteotomy is a surgery that repositions or reshapes the bones in your

knee• Arthroplasty--joint or knee replacement therapy. Source: familydoctor.org

Knee Pain and ArthritisOsteoarthritis is a joint disease that causes the cushion layer between your bones (carti-lage) to wear away. It is also called degenera-tive joint disease. Osteoarthritis can affect any joint in your body, and it is the most common type of arthritis.
