H ISTORY
A SPACE FOR INDEPENDENT THINKERS
From the time it first opened its doors in 1910, the Netspace building was the home of independent thinkers who were not content to follow the crowd. In 1910 it opened as the Mission Theatre showcasing several vaudeville acts a day. Some of these acts included a sharpshooter, live music, comedy, and dance.
As the interest in vaudeville faded, the Mission Theatre fell on hard times and shut its doors about a decade later. It reopened as the Cameo Theatre, but it couldn’t weather the Great Depression, and it went dark not long after the stock market crash of 1929.
The building didn’t stay empty long. Located near the heart of downtown Salt Lake, it has was used for a variety of purposes, some industrial and some corporate, until it was expanded and converted into office space near the end of the twentieth century. It was in this space that Medicity continued the Netspace building’s grand tradition of innovation. What began as a small healthcare technology company on the 2nd floor in 2,500 square feet of space, grew in just 10 years to a national technology powerhouse providing a backbone to state based healthcare exchanges. The dedication paid off for the original Medicity team as they sold their company to Insurance conglomerate, Aetna, for just north of 500 Million dollars.
