Dear Members, Chere Consoeurs, Cher Confrères

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join us at our 55th Grand Chapitre in the historic city of York, known 1000 years ago by the Viking name Jorvik.

Our base will be the stunning Grade II listed building that was previously the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway and is now the Cedar Court Grand Hotel. General Manager, Maître Hôtelier Maria Florou and her team, including the kitchen crew lead by Maître Rôtisseur Martin Henley, will make us most welcome.

Our weekend starts with a Dîner Amical in the Directors’ Board Room of the hotel. Next morning there will be a visit to the world famous Castle Howard, setting for Brideshead Revisited. Our Welcome Dinner that evening takes place in the medieval Merchant Adventurers’ Hall.

As is now our custom, the induction of new members and promotees will take place on Saturday morning to allow the maximum participation by our professionals. This year we are especially privileged to be able to hold the Induction in St Michael Le Belfrey church opposite York Minster. Our Inducting Officer will be Nils-Petter Aardal, Bailli Délégué Honoraire of Norway and Membre du Conseil Magistral.

Saturday afternoon has options to learn more of the city and its history. Then in the evening our Gala Dinner will be in the spectacular Grand Hall of the National Railway Museum. This will be a fun evening amongst giant steam locomotives including the world renowned Mallard – holder of the world steam speed record.

On Sunday we have a leisurely start and are then in for a real treat, a countryside tour and lunch on board the luxurious Pullman coaches of Belmond’s Northern Belle train. The Belmond Northern Belle was, until six months ago, known as Orient Express. Now you recognise it!

The teams at all our venues have planned great menus reflecting both the location and time of year. All the trips include knowledgeable guides so that you can maximise your enjoyment. We look forward to welcoming you all, together with your guests, to a weekend of cultural interest, culinary and vinious excellence and most of all great camaraderie.

Vive la Chaîne!

THE BELMOND NORTHERN BELLE

Page 5: 55th Grand Chapitre de Grande Bretagne · Express until a brand name change earlier this year) reflects the style of England’s 1930s ‘Belle’ trains and the Pullman carriages

The Belmond Northern Belle (previously known as the Orient Express until a brand name change earlier this year) reflects the style of England’s 1930s ‘Belle’ trains and the Pullman carriages of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.

Travel through some of Britain’s most beautiful scenery while enjoying cuisine and fine wines using produce from the landscapes you pass through. Combining classic craftsmanship and contemporary engineering, it is a reflection of the magnificent ‘Belle’ trains of the 1930s. The six dining carriages are named after great British castles or stately homes. They display marquetry, fabrics and brass fittings specifically commissioned from British craftsmen.

THE SPIRIT OF TRAVEL A trip aboard recreates the elegance and comfort of train travel at its finest. Allow yourself to be whisked back to a more gracious age on our Spirit of Travel journey.

Enjoy a five-course lunch accompanied by champagne. As the train takes you on a tour of Britain’s beautiful countryside, strolling musicians provide a soothing soundtrack to your dining experience and a magician entertains you at your table.

Royalty, film stars and heads of state were transported in luxury on these ‘palaces on wheels’ back in the 1920s and ‘30s. That Golden Age of Travel has been recreated in all its glory for you to enjoy today. Stepping on board is like stepping back in time, to an age when train travel was the epitome of sophistication.

THE CHAînE EXPERIEnCE

Half the train is booked exclusively for the Chaîne. Our menu has been specially created by Executive Chef Robbie Gleeson and matched with selected wines. This will be hugely popular and to be amongst the 108 lucky members we recommend early booking. Priority will be given to those supporting the whole weekend by also booking the Friday and Saturday dinners.

DînER AMICALOur opening dinner will be prepared by the Cedar Court Grand’s Executive Chef, Maître Rôtisseur Martin Henley. It will be held in the candlelit Board Room.

This beautiful oak panelled room, measuring 51 feet by 28 feet, was the building’s flagship space. It went on to house what was, at its time, the biggest board room table in Britain. We will be seated in more intimate groups.

Golf at the Fulford Championship Course Situated in a heathland and woodland setting just one mile from the centre of the city, Fulford Golf Club remains one of the best inland golf courses in Britain. Twenty three consecutive European Tour events has firmly put Fulford on the global golfing map.

Start with lunch in the clubhouse before an early afternoon tee-off.

Yorkshire’s finest historic house and estate, home to the Howard family for over 300 years, Castle Howard is a magnificent 18th century residence set within 1,000 acres of breathtaking landscape in the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the heart of North Yorkshire. Built by Sir John Vanburgh for Charles Howard, third Earl of Carlisle, it is widely acknowledged as one of Britain’s finest historic houses.

People from around the world will recall the images of Castle Howard that was the setting for both film and TV series of Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited. We are privileged to be able to have a private guided tour of the house before it is opened to the public at the end of our tour.

We will then have coffee before generous time for everyone to explore the gardens and grounds at their leisure – or even revisit some of the rooms. A private lunch will be taken in the Grecian Hall when it is hoped that The Honourable Simon Howard will be able to welcome the group to his home. Before departing for York and our hotel make sure you leave a little time to visit the farm shops in the Stable Courtyard.

Welcome Dinner at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall Set in a small garden in the centre of historic York, the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall has been the home for 650 years of The Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York. This stunning medieval building was constructed in 1357.

We will have drinks before dinner in the Undercroft which was used as an alms house to help the sick and the poor and the Chapel offering spiritual care. The Great Hall, where the Medieval merchants first gathered to conduct business and to socialise, is where we will have dinner. The Hall is home to many remarkable collections including silver, furniture and paintings, which provide a glimpse into the rich history of the Hall and the people associated with it.

Visit To The Jorvik Viking CentreThe Viking-Age city of Jorvik grew to today’s York. Walk along the river bank to this venue and join over 16 million visitors over the past 30 years. Visitors journey through the reconstruction of Viking-Age streets, as they would have been 1000 years ago. The remains of 1,000 year old houses are revealed beneath your feet, objects taken from the excavations are explored and Viking-age timbers are brought before your eyes. Travel in a moving time capsule and piece together the puzzle of where the Vikings came from, why they came here and how they lived and died.

Induction Ceremony At St Michael Le Belfrey Church The ceremony will take place in this 500 year old church next to the Minster, and we are delighted to welcome Nils-Petter Aardal, Bailli Délégué Honoraire of the Bailliage of Norway and Membre du Conseil Magistral – home of the Vikings – as our Inducting Officer.

Page 9: 55th Grand Chapitre de Grande Bretagne · Express until a brand name change earlier this year) reflects the style of England’s 1930s ‘Belle’ trains and the Pullman carriages

The National Railway Museum is the world’s largest railway museum, holding over 1,000,000 objects covering 300 years of railway history. Home to City of Truro, the first locomotive to exceed 100 MPH, and to Mallard, the world’s fastest ever steam locomotive at 126 MPH, the collection boasts locomotives and carriages from as far afield as North America, China and Japan.

The museum holds dinners from time to time in the Carriage Hall – however, the museum has agreed for the first time to hold a dinner in the Great Hall, an impressive setting where locomotives are housed around a large turntable.

A spectacular display of iconic locomotives and carriages offers a unique backdrop for what will be a fun and memorable evening.

Experience the luxury and style of the golden age of travel at Cedar Court grand Hotel & Spa. Yorkshire’s only five star hotel overlooking the historic city walls, The Grand is the very best in traditional English style and service. This is the place to stay in York. Built originally as the headquarters for the North Eastern Railway in 1906 this is a Grade II listed building. The interior of the building is typified by high ceilings, tall

windows, lofty arches and wide open corridors and spaces. These, in combination with the use of Belgian marble and creamy Huddlestone stone lend the building a very light, airy and spacious feel. The building is also unaffected by outside noise despite its city centre location, the original building having been installed with double-glazing. Splendid terrazzo with Roman mosaic margins was laid in the corridors, whilst patterned wood blocks were used in the offices. The original building was intended as a place of business,

but it was not designed to be purely functional. The building is vast and impressive but also characterised by wonderful detailing - such as the intricate wrought-iron balustrades, luscious garland ceiling plasterwork and skilfully carved stone flourishes - and elegant individual spaces like the eye-catching octagonal central hall on the first floor landing. The Spa at the Grand is set in the hotel’s atmospheric

vaults where the North Eastern Railway company once stowed its millions.
