Set goals – setting goals is the key to success with any project. All of our courses are divided into modules to make it easier for you to progress.

Our top ten tips for your success

With over 200 flexible distance learning courses, we want to make sure you choose the right one for you. You may already have a very clear idea of what you want or need to study. For some, the decision is harder and you may be unsure about what subject to take or which level to start at.

Before you start, you will need to think about a few things that will help you make the right decision:

First, you need to think about your • learning objectives and the reason why you want to learn something new. You may want to get a qualification to take your education to the next level, to get a better position at work, to learn something new or to fulfil a passion. Whatever your reasons and interests are, we offer a variety of courses that will help you get to where you want to be.

You’ll also need to consider the • amount of time you can or are willing to dedicate to your studies. We know that you could have a very busy life or that you just might not have studied for a long time and want to start slowly. All of our courses offer flexible learning options that will fit around you so you can study as quickly as you like, or take the full study period to complete your course. Therefore, before choosing your course, you should first decide why and how you want to learn.

Finally, it is important that you consider• what your experience is when thinking about which level you are aiming to start at. For some people this is the hardest decision of all but we can help. You shouldn’t be put off aiming high, but you don’t want to take on something that you will not be able to achieve. Your decision will depend on a balance of your experience, your previous education and the time you’re willing and able to put into studying.

We are unique in the range of subjects and levels we offer and many courses don’t need any previous qualifications, so if you meet the basic requirements and think you can do it, you’re ready to go.

If you’re unsure about a particular course, or have qualifications or experience that you’d like us to consider, give us a call on 0800 056 3986 and speak to one of our course advisors, who will be happy to help.

Celebrate your success – tell yourself that when you achieve a goal, you’ll treat yourself to something.

Don’t leave everything to the last minute – whilst a bit of pressure can bring out the best in people, it isn’t wise to leave everything to the last minute. Careful planning will help you.

Ask questions – there is no such thing as a silly question, so utilise our support and the Student Community to ask anything you want.

Join a study group – with ICS there is always support on hand from your fellow students, your tutor and, for some courses, your mentor. You will have access to our online Student Community so you’re never alone.

Bring your studies to life – put what you learn into practice as soon as possible, real practical examples bring your course to life and are much more interesting than just reading books on the subject.

Talk about it – enlist the support of friends, family or colleagues. You’re more likely to stick to your course if you’ve got the support of those close to you.

Pace yourself – there is a reason why it takes three years to graduate from university – if you work through your course steadily, you are more likely to succeed.

Create your study space – preparation of your study space is important. Make sure that everything you need is to hand and that the space is clutter free with good light.

Set a study timetable – by assigning regular study times each week, you will soon get into the habit of learning. Establish what time is best for you and ensure that you take regular breaks when studying to keep your mind focused.

0800 056 3986

ExamsFor some courses and to achieve your qualification, you may need to sit one or more exams. However, this is not the case for all courses since assessment can also be on a continuous basis.

In some cases, we will liaise with the Awarding Body to organise your examination for you. However, please note that, depending on your chosen course, you may have to make the arrangements directly. If this is the case, don’t worry; we will provide you with as much information as we can to help you make your exam arrangements.

As always, your tutors and course advisors will guide you through the process and make sure you are ready before completing an assignment.

You may also be required to take a final assessment at the end of each module, depending on the course you have chosen. This could take the form of coursework, a practical workshop or an exam.

If you have any questions about either the assessment or exam arrangements for the course you are interested in, please do not hesitate to contact us.

For the majority of courses, you’ll need to complete a number of assignments as part of your coursework. Unless stated otherwise, you will have to submit completed coursework online through the Student Community. There are two types of assignments: tutor-marked assignments, which usually include essays or practical projects, and instant feedback assignments, which include multiple-choice questions.

Assignments are a great way of checking your progress throughout your course, as your tutor will grade and comment on each one, letting you know exactly how you’re doing at every step so you can achieve your goal.

Assignments

Once you’ve enrolled, you’ll receive your information pack as well as your course materials. All of our paper-based courses are divided into bite-sized modules made up of clearly identifiable study units.

You work through each unit at your own pace and with the support and guidance of your tutor and, where relevant, mentor. At the end of each unit you complete a test paper – the format of which varies according to the course you are studying – and send it to your tutor. Your tutor then marks this and returns it to you along with constructive comments. When you successfully complete a module and feel ready, you move onto the next one.

Some courses have specific requirements, however we will inform you of what you need when you enrol so there will be no surprises when you start. The entry requirements for each course are explained online at icslearn.co.uk. Alternatively, you can contact

our course advisors to find out more about the course you are interested in.

Remember that you’re not alone – as well as tutor support, you also get access to our online Student Community, where you can direct queries to your tutors, chat with fellow students and get access to your online resources. Finally, you can join us on one of our social networking sites where you will find thousands of other students to chat with, as well as information and updates from ICS.

To help you get started, you receive a welcome and induction call or email to give you all the information you need to approach your studies, register and access useful information.

We are commited to continually improving the service you get, in order to ensure that the support you need to achieve your goals is the best available.

One of the main reasons why students don’t choose distance learning to achieve their goal is the fear of being alone and not receiving the support they need. But distance learning does not mean studying alone. In fact, with ICS, you’ll have the reassurance of total support from our skilled tutors and student advisors to guide you through your studies.

As one of our students you’ll be able to arrange a call from our experienced tutors and contact them by email whenever you need to. You’ll also have access to our online Student Community, allowing you to chat with other students, get study tips and advice, access our resource library and submit assessments or queries.

BenefitsDistance learning is the alternative to traditional education which offers you the chance to study in your own way in your own time. You are not confined to a classroom on a campus for a certain number of hours on a given day. You study when it suits you so you can fit it in around your work or family commitments.

Improving your skills and qualifications can not only open doors to a better job, higher salary or new prospects but in addition, learning can also provide a number of wider benefits such as improving your concentration, self-discipline, confidence and ability to communicate.

As an ICS Student, you are also eligible for a wide range of National Union of Students (NUS) benefits, discounts and offers.

“ ““After completing the first module on the MCSE track I moved from the company’s Accounts department into IT to work as a support technician. Hopefully, I’ll get a promotion when I qualify. Being able to study in my spare time has made all the difference. I’d happily recommend ICS to friends - in fact I already have.”

Philip Midgley Studied our Microsoft Certified IT Professional.“ “

The courses are fantastic and are laid out in a way that is easy to follow. When I was confused or I didn’t quite understand something the tutors and student support teams were always helpful and didn’t mind answering any of my queries, no matter how small. By learning from home I’ve also saved money on the inconvenient costs of going to college, such as travel or childcare, and I can spend even more quality time with my child.

Hannah Burt Studied our BTEC in Health and Social Care.

“I completed my nursing diploma in Zambia but it has always been my ambition to upgrade to a degree. Upon moving to Sheffield eight years ago I began working in a nursing home and have built up plenty of experience in the care home industry. Studying with ICS has allowed me to expand my knowledge and boost my career prospects.

Paxina Mwikisa, Sheffield Studied our BSc Nursing (Top-up) degree.

After I was made redundant I did think to myself, what am I going to do now? I’ve always had a strong interest in photography so spent time studying it. However, I also love organising and planning events so I thought I’d combine both photography and wedding planning. I wanted to learn what goes on behind the scenes to bring a wedding day to life. I didn’t have anything to lose and if it worked out I’d be fulfilling a dream.

Chantal Lachance-Gibson, Glasgow Studied our ICS Wedding Planner course.

Tasmia Kamal, Edinburgh Studied our BTEC Teaching Assistant course.

“I know tutors are supposed to be helpful but my ICS tutor was absolutely fantastic – I never felt that she was ever that far away. It was a great source of comfort, especially as I’d been out of education for such a long time. I really appreciated all of her help – she really went above and beyond the call of duty.”

Studying for a GCSE, IGCSE or A level with ICS isn’t like studying at school because you’re in control of your timetable and how you study. We have a range of qualifications across a variety of subjects that can help you to address gaps in your school education or take your attainment to the next level.

GCSEs• are the main qualifications taken by 14–16 year-olds in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Because they are valued by both colleges and employers, they are also studied by adults wishing to improve or update their qualifications.

IGCSEs• are an international adaptation of the UK GCSE, have the same value as a GCSE and have become immensely popular with learners and teachers, both internationally and within the UK. Fully exam-based, there is no coursework element to this qualification, making it ideal for home schooling and distance learning, and for people seeking a qualification but who are unable to attend full-time school classes.

A Levels• are one of the most common qualifications sought by universities and can also give access to colleges and employment.

Designed by experts, all our courses are exactly the same as those offered at school or college. You will receive all the high quality learning materials you need to study where and when you like, so that you get the results you want in order to achieve your ambition.
