We will be applying counting principles from Chapter 4 (FCP, nPr, nCr) to problems involving probabilities.

Remember the general principle of probability:

These may be calculated with counting principles.

FCP or Permutation or Combination

An athletic committee with three members is to be randomly selected from a group of 6 gymnasts, 4 weightlifters, and 8 longdistance runners.

a) Determine the probability that the committee is comprised entirely of runners.

b) Determine the probability that the committee is equally represented by each of the three types of athletes.

Example 1

Apr 151:17 PM

A messy drawer contains 3 black socks, 5 blue socks, and 8 white socks, none of which are paired up.  If the owner grabs two socks without looking, what is the probability that both will be white?

Example 2

Laura, Dave, Monique, Marcus, and Sarah are going to a party.  What is the probability that two of the girls will arrive first, if they all arrive individually?

Example 3

Nov 298:59 AM

Example 4There are 5 boys and 6 girls in a class.  If 3 names are drawn to help set up for the Blazer Blizzard, what is the probability that 2 boys and 1 girl are picked?
