5.3 Eternal Glories : Kite flying • Kite flying or Patang Bazi is a most popular cultural sport of India from the time unknown. Some say the history of kites dates back to the days of Mahabharat. In early days kites were used for sending messages and measuring distance during wars. In Hindi, Kite is called Patang and the string which it is flown known as Manjha. The wood and Bamboo roll on which the string is wound is called a charkhi or Hujka. The kites are given different names like Danda ,Pari , Chaand taara , Shakar para , Tiranga . • Kite fighting which involves to cut the each others kite strings is most interesting aspect of flying kites. It is called Patang Baazi in Hindi and generally fighters use 1 to 4 feet kite made by special paper. 5.3 Eternal Glories : Kite flying• Kite flying or Patang Bazi is a most popular cultural sport of India

from the time unknown. Some say the history of kites dates back to the days of Mahabharat. In early days kites were used for sending messages and measuring distance during wars. • Which is most important thing in Kite flying and we have to take precautions while preparing it. A paste made of glue and powdered glass specially spread on the thread to make the manjha. People use many things like bottle heads to avoid their fingers to cut by it.

• In towns and cities of north and west India, Kite flying is a craze. People fly their kites mostly from their houses. At some places kites are flown from open ground. Being fun sports all time kites are flown throughout the year. However there are some special occasions on which every enthusiast involve himself in Patang Baazi. There occasions include Makar Sankranti, Basant Panchami, Raksha Bandhan and independence day .

• Kites have their appearance over three thousand years ago, in China. All the right materials found their for it’s making : Bamboo for the frame, Silk for the sale and bridle. It had a mythical and religious dimensions. Later it was experimented as a science experiment for searches. From China the kite was reproduced in Asia Later in Europe, and now in other age it is used in America and other countries.

• Kites and Sciences –• American Diplomat and Scientist Benjamin Franklin experimented

with the kites to investigate atmospheric electricity and the kite flying. Beginning in the 1890’s and continuing about 40 years box kite consisting a two or more connected open ended boxes, were used for sending metrological instruments aloft to measure wind velocity temperature pressure humidity etc.

• Kites and the Development of transports –• On November 12 1894 Lawrence Hargrave was lifted from the by

train by four of his ‘cellular kites’ This was simply one stage in his quest for a stable lifting surface which could then be powered and used as a way of transportation.Hargrave was doing his atmost to invent the aeroplane ! Hargrave developed several styles of kites and gliders, refined and develop the concept of curved surface wings and also invented the rotary engine . He never patented any of his inventions, preferring them to be available for the advancement of mankind. He made scathing attacks on people who experimented in secrecy with the intention of pro fitting from their inventions, accusing them of trying to exploit humanity.On November 7 1903 Samuel Franklin Cody actually crossed the English channel on a vessel toed by kites.

• Kites During War – • In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, kites

were used for lifting military observers to heights from which they could observe the disposition of enemy forces. During World War Second [ 1939-45] kites were also used as gunnery targets french military kites are long beam popular with kite flyers there lifting power and stability make them ideal for high altitude flying.
