SENIOR HEALTHUrinary Tract Infections May Cause
Behavioral, not Physicial Symptoms in EldersTwo sisters who shared caretaker duties of their elderlymother, who suffers from depression, noticed she wasmore confused and she had a glassy eyed look. Theconfusion would last a few days and was often followed by a fever, and painful urination. It never occurred to the sisters that their mother was suffering from a UTI.Older adults often present different symptoms of a urinary tract infection. UTI symptoms in older adultsare often behavioral. The symptoms we usuallyassociate with this problem are often absent in seniors. They may suffer from extreme fatigue and/or changesin their behavior and mental status. At times theymay even see things that aren’t there such as bugscrawling on the ceiling. These are the warningssigns to look for: . The need to go to the bathroom frequently. . Complaints of discomfort during urination. . Cloudy, dark, or foul smelling urine. . An onset of incontinence. . Any sudden change in mental status such as lethargy, hallucinations, restlessness or yelling, not present before.Seek medical attention as soon as possible. Dr. Amanda Smith, Medical Director Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute University of South Florida
