Summer is about to be in full swing with pool parties, picnics, days atthe lake, and backyard barbeques. Along with all the summer fun, there are some pretty awesome summer camps for teens to be a partof right here on Fort Knox. I’m talking about the Devers Middle Schooland Teen Center’s 9 summer camps that run from June throughoutthe end of August. Each camp lasts a week and is open for youthgoing into grades 5-12. Here are the fun and exciting camps that Devers will be running this summer.

Jump Start (Triple Play & Walking) - During this camp the youth andstaff walk or march to their destination of activity. All destinations will be on-post. Activities will be sports that are played outside. This camp is derived from the Triple Play program of The Boys and Girls

Club of America. The triple play program focuses on learning how to maintain a sound mind, body, and spirit. This summer,

the Devers staff have planned some very exciting and educational activities for youth to perform in the camp, including an end of week field trip to Louisville.

This summer several of the camps will be focusing their projects for competition in the upcoming

4-H fair at the end of the summer. These camps include Art For Every Angle, Deverlicious, Keep You in Stitches, Yo Robotics, and Shots Fired.

Art for Every Angle (Fine Arts) - In this summer camp, youth can feel free to let loose their creativity. Creativity will take on many forms including but not limited to sculpting, canvas painting, fashion design, and jewelry making. Some of the pieces created in this

club will be selected to be entered in the 4-H fair. Youth will join Miss Bambi and discover what they can create.

Deverlicious (Cooking) - This camp teaches youth how to make basic dishes like breakfast items and pastas. Cooking

camp also has a dinner party portion where youth learn what goes into holding a formal dinner affair with garnishes and décor. Lastly, youth will learn how to bake the all-important desserts!

Keep You in Stitches (Sewing) - Experience a one of a kind sewingcamp this summer. Youth will be using sewing machines to create theirown pajama bottoms, a night shirt, and a draw string bag. Miss Lindsey will be leading the way in this fun and interactive summercamp.

Yo Robotics (Technology) - This year, tech club is focused on robotics! Yes, I said robotics. Curious youth will be learning about robots, how they work, what they can do, and how you can build one.Miss Angie will be wowing the camps crowd with her knowledge of robotic wonders.

Shots Fired (Photography/Magazine) - This camp is geared for youthwho want to learn about photography and composition. “Photography is an art of observation. It has little to do with the thingsyou see and everything to do with the way you see them.” In thiscamp, youth will learn to visually and creatively express themselvesand the world around them from Miss Tessa and Miss Amber. Therewill also be a writing workshop offered so that youth can gain confidence expressing themselves in writing. “The worst thing youwrite is better than the best thing you did not write.” At the end of thecamp, every youth will have the opportunity to submit their own workto be published in the Devers Voice. They will also be able to entertheir projects at the State Fair. “Don’t forget – no one else sees theworld the way you do, so no one else can tell the stories that you haveto tell.”

Back 2 Basics (Basketball Camp) - This brand new camp will be led byMr. Lamar Jackson and will be focusing on basketball skills. There willbe different basketball workshops offered like dribbling, defense, jump shot mechanics, and low post. The camp will feature mini gamesdaily and will end with a tournament.

Each camp will teach values and skills our youth will use later in life. Some of these camps will introduce activities to teens for the first time, others will teach them a little bit more than they knew before.Whether their interests lie with photography, fine arts, sports or moretechnical hobbies, the youth around Fort Knox should not be boredthis summer. For information on how to enroll, contact Devers or Parent Central Services (502) 624-6703.

National Military Spouse Appreciation Day is celebrated on the Friday before Mother’s Day inMay. This year, it will be celebrated on Friday, May 6, 2016. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan recognized the profound importance of spousalcommitment to the readiness and well-being ofMilitary members with Proclamation 5184, datedApril 17, 1984. Congress officially made MilitarySpouse Appreciation Day part of National MilitaryAppreciation Month in 1999. Subsequently, theDepartment of Defense standardized the date bydeclaring the Friday before Mother’s Day everyyear as Military Spouse Appreciation Day to show appreciation for thesacrifices of Military spouses.

In 2011, a Department of Defense survey showed women as makingup 14.5% of the active duty Military, up from 1.4% in 1970. Forty-sixpercent (46%) of those active duty women are married and 52% of theirpartners are civilians. Military husbands are more prominent in today’sArmy than ever before. We got a chance to meet and interview threeof them. We hope readers can perhaps gain a new perspective aboutwhat it means to be a “Military Husband”. These are our interviewees:

* Brad Combs – a U.S. Army Soldier with 25 years from Central Illinois, Brad and his wife met as Lieutenants at Fort Knox.

* David Clint Luttrell – serving as a Reservist for 14 years from Xenia, OH. David met his spouse when she was the AGR training NCO for his unit, the 801st Combat Support Hospital in Fort Sheridan, IL.

* Rickey Owens - a U.S. Army retired Soldier born and raised in Alexander City, Alabama. Rickey met his wife in Chicago, IL.

On the topic of what is most challenging andmost rewarding about being a Military husband of an active duty service member these were their thoughts.

Brad said that the most challenging aspect is trying to adapt to what are inherently a “wives” time honored tradition. The most rewarding is theadaptability of Army wives to welcomedifferent ideas that might seem unorthodox from years of tradition.

David shared that as an Army Reservist for 14 years, the toughestthing for him about being a malespouse is when someone calls hisname “SFC Luttrell,” and they wanthis wife, not him. That took a little

bit of getting used to. He also said there are many more rewarding aspects of his situation of being a Military male spouse. “I enjoy living

on a Military installation. My wife challenges me inmy workouts. Whenever I am going somewhere onorders for the Reserves, she makes sure I have allmy documents, items on my packing list, andeverything is correct administratively. I also likemoving to new places with new experiences andmeeting new people.”

Rickey told us that “the most challenging part isjust simply feeling out of place especially at Military functions. The male Soldiers talk “shop”constantly. I don’t really fit in with the females. Inmost cases, I am the only male spouse. The mostrewarding part is watching my wife around her

peers. I feel so proud of her accomplishments and realize that my support allows her to succeed.”

Next, they were asked to expound on advice to other Military husbands.

Brad explained the advice he would give a Military husband is the sameadvice he would give a Military wife: “1) Be yourself. 2) Do what you canand don’t sweat the rest.”

David’s advice takes a different approach, he says Military husbandsshould do the following: “Try to keepactive both physically and profession-ally. Work toward a career goal where ifyou had to, you could support the Family on your own. This will relievepressure from your wife. Don’t look at this lifestyle as a shot at your masculinity. Look at this lifestyle as achance to really support your wife inher Military endeavors.”

Rickey thinks that it is very important tobe a team. “Be supportive and understand that your wife understandsyour frustrations. In most cases, she is probably the only female in mostMilitary professional settings. Most importantly, enjoy yourself and remember your spouse's success is the Family’s success.”

Last but not least; how about you? Are you a Military husband or a Military wife that would like to share your own perspectives on this subject of being a Military husband? If so, visit us on Facebook and letus hear it. Staff Sergeant Clinton Romesha of Red Platoon andthe rest of the Black Knight Troop were preparing toshut down Keating in 2009. It had been built onlythree years prior, the most remote and inaccessiblein a string of bases built by the U.S. Military in thehope of preventing Taliban insurgents from movingfreely back and forth between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Romesha was key in the counter-attack thatdrove back the overwhelming Taliban forcesand he received the Medal of Honor for his actions. He is oneof only 16 service Members who have so far been awarded the Medal ofHonor for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom

Here at Fort Knox, Soldiers and their Families are our number one priority. We striveto provide an environment in which Service Members and their Families can thriveto ensure the readiness and resiliency of our Fort Knox Community. In doing this, the decision has been made to transform BOSS Avenue into the Warrior Zone, runby Fort Knox Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. With the Warrior Zonecomes several upgrades to the facility. While renovations are not yet complete, changes have already begun and there is much to look forward to in the comingmonths.

Inside the Warrior Zone, there are plenty of things to occupy your time. Pool and pingpong tables are available for play, along with Xbox One and PS 4, and all of the latest games to accompany them. Also inside the Warrior Zone is a computer lab forpatrons to do research or study in a quiet environment. Wi-Fi is free throughout thebuilding to help patrons stay connected. A theater room is another feature at Warrior Zone with a large screen that is 20 feet wide, comfortable theatre seats alongwith a few bean bag beds. There will always be a movie playing in the movie roomand popcorn will always be available. Movies aren’t the only thing you can watch, however. The Rec R oom, used for watching sporting events has a screen that is 15feet wide. You will be able to enjoy a game in a comfortable place with others whohave similar interests. A snack shack and customer service desk will also be installedat the front of the facility, so you never have to worry about going hungry.

There are many things that make the Warrior Zone special, but what stands out is itsfocus on all Active Duty Soldiers’ well-being. It provides Soldiers a place to go wherethey can relax after a long day and provides the opportunity to easily meet new

people. Program manager, Michelle Sharp, said she is willing to buy any of the moviesand games that they wish to see in the facility. “Tell me what you want and I am willing to do it,” Sharp said in reference to programming and purchasing new itemsfor the facility. When asked why she likes managing the Warrior Zone, Sharp says “I enjoy providing recreational activities to Soldiers…things that can help them de-stress after a long day. I enjoy seeing smiles on their faces and watching thembuild relationships with one another.”

Once everything is in place, patrons can expect to see one program a month at theWarrior Zone. A Madden Tournament was hosted in December where a brand newXbox was given away. In July, there will be a 24 hour Harry Potter marathon wherepatrons can enjoy every Harry Potter movie, or just stop in as they please, and catchone or two movies. Popular TV series will also be shown weekly at the Warrior Zoneto include, The Walking Dead and American Idol.

It is important to note that the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program willstill be located here as well.

The Warrior Zone is open to ALL Active Duty Soldiers and their guests, not just single Soldiers as it had been in the past. Guests must be 18 years or older to enter. All amenities within the Warrior Zone are free of charge except food at the snackshack. So come, bring a friend or two, and enjoy your time at the Warrior Zone.
