Physical Changes

A change which occurs when one or more physical properties of a substance is changed. It does not produce any new substance and usually is easily reversed. It is a change in the shape, size, or state of matter.

Typically can be identified using the five senses

Examples:

• Tearing

• Grinding

• Melting

• Dissolving

baking soda + vinegar = carbon dioxide gas

Chemical Changes

A change which alters the chemical properties of a substance or which forms a new substance. The properties of the new substance are different than the properties of the starting substances.

Chemical Changes

Clues that a chemical change has happened

5 Signs of a Chemical Change

• Bubbles of gas are produced• Heat or light is given off• A solid (precipitate) is formed in a liquid• A new color appears• The change is difficult to reverse

• Hazardous Material is a substance that requires special handling or storage because it can be dangerous or harmful to humans, animals or the environment.

Feb 16:39 PM

• The two types of hazardous material symbols are;1. Hazardous Household Product Symbols (HHPS)

2. Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Symbols
