Message from the Headmaster

We are delighted to welcome you to the festivities planned for this weekend which is going to be a full and busy one as the Graham House anniversary coincides with the Centenary of our Chapel! Many of you have extended your visit to include both events, and we thank you for your enthusiastic support and commitment to College.

As we celebrate this wonderful milestone in the history of Graham House, I should like to thank our College historian and biographer, Dr Marguerite Poland, for capturing succinctly, in the piece opposite written especially for this occasion, the significant role that Graham House, and the staff who served in the House and School, have played in the history of St Andrew’s.

We trust that you will enjoy the weekend and renew many friendships and acquaintances over the next few days.

Thank you for joining us.

Warmest regards

Paul Edey Headmaster

Past Housemasters: Bob Sutherland (1971 - 1983), Roger Clark (1963 - 1970), Ant Kitson (1986 - 1995) and Cliff Walters (1984

- 1985). Sadly Cliff Walters passed away on 28 August 2013.

Graham House – Fifty Year Jubilee by Dr Marguerite Poland

Once the old toll house guarding the road to the hinterland, the present Graham House is the most historic building on the St Andrew’s College campus to which, it can be argued, St Andrew’s owes its birthplace. For, in 1855, the owner of the property made the gift of his adjacent pasture to founder Bishop John Armstrong, on which to build his infant College.

Rev. Robert Mullins, Bishop Armstrong’s fellow missionary, bought the house in 1872. As Principal of the burgeoning Anglican (Mullins) Institution, established as a branch of St Andrew’s for the education of the sons of the Xhosa people, he was in need of more accommodation than the buildings at St Andrew’s could provide. The residence became known as the ‘Old Home’ and housed the large Mullins family, the pupils of the Anglican (Mullins) Institution and became a ‘home from home’ for dozens of College boys over the years, who boarded under the care of the devoted Mrs Jennie Mullins.

As Robert Mullins’ fame as an educator spread, his Institution grew into one of the foremost training centres in the country. Besides an academic curriculum, carpentry and printing were offered. A significant number of the early clergy were also prepared for Holy Orders by both Mullins and Dr John Espin, Headmaster of St Andrew’s. The institution was an independent entity growing its own crops on the present Knowling Field. A tradition of Shakespeare productions was established, believed to be the first performed by black students in this country. ᶦ Alumni made significant national contributions to education, the Church and politics and included some of the founding fathers of the African National Congress.

When Mrs Jennie Mullins died in 1924 her son Rev. Robert Mullins, Headmaster of St Andrew’s Prep, bought the Old Home and sold it to St Andrew’s in 1926. Since then it has served variously as sanatorium, library and new boy house. In 1944 the building was extended to accommodate the Bankes Art and Music School. In 1953 the establishment was named Graham House after the three eminent Old Andrean grandsons of the founder of the city, Sir John, Sir Thomas and Mr Francis Graham, who had given both signal service to St Andrew’s and their country.

In 1963 boys were asked to volunteer from other houses to become founding students of Graham, the new, fully-fledged sixth house. For any existing College boy whose attachment to his house is usually deeply entrenched, the request to move to a ‘new’ establishment without an academic or sporting record required a loyalty to school beyond the personal and partisan. But in doing so this ‘band of brothers’ – who rank high in the story of College – inherited a unique tradition and milieu. Here are the ancient military cells, the courtyard well, the gracious arches, the high ceilinged dormitories, the hollow haunted oak, the lofty coach house, the vibrant presence of the pupils, black and white, who lived here long ago.

The sense of home and of history have been nurtured by a wonderful succession of Housemasters and their wives who have embraced the tradition of service and belonging characteristic of the Mullins family and have earned, in their turn, a profound loyalty and love from their boys that is intrinsic to the ethos of Graham House.

They have built, in 50 years, on an old and honourable tradition.

ᶦ Information from Dr Brian Willan, historian, author and biographer of Sol Plaatjie.

Message from the Housemaster

I am pleased to welcome all former Graham House boys and their partners to our 50th anniversary celebrations. Thank you for making the effort to be here, especially those of you who have travelled from afar. You must have many fond memories of Graham House and I trust that you will share these experiences with us this weekend. Today there is an eclectic mix of boys in the House which is made up of 80 pupils. We don’t have bells anymore and, with the Clapham Jubilee Dining Hall right next door, the focus of the whole College campus has certainly shifted. A home away from home is how we describe Graham House and our surroundings certainly are beautiful. We are naturally proud of our lovely gardens and the upgrades that were done to the House a few years ago. All in all the boys are happy and content. I trust you will all have a lovely celebratory weekend with us at College. Kind regards

Message from the Head of House

Thank you for joining us this weekend as we celebrate this important milestone in the history of Graham House together. It is an honour and a privilege for me to be the Head of Graham House in its 50th year. Graham House’s laid back yet disciplined environment is one that continues to grow young boys into fine gentlemen and this quality is something that is unique to our House. During my time at College I have been involved in many activities in all spheres of boarding school life. All of which would never have been possible if it wasn’t for the lifestyle that Graham House allows the boys to live. Over the past half century a lot has changed in Graham House. After undergoing major renovations in 2009, the House has never looked better. All the Grade 11 and 12 pupils have their own rooms and every dormitory has a kitchenette. The Grade 8s and Grade 12s live in their own separate annexes (Van Der Riet Lodge and the Sutherland block) while the rest of the boys live in the main house. There are currently 80 boys in the house, 63 are boarders and the remainder are day boys. Our Housemaster, Mr Hoefnagels, shares his 50th birthday with the house as he reaches his half century in October. The current Matron is Felicity Elliott, and her team Christina Faltein, Evelyn Mkolo and Vuvu Centwa, and our gardener Phumzile Mpako, do an incredible job making sure that all the laundry is done on time and that the house is always looking immaculate. The centre of the school has recently shifted towards Graham House as the new Clapham Jubilee Dining Hall has just been built, no more than 15 metres from our front door. This has had a major impact on the life of Graham House boys as one merely has to roll out of bed to find oneself in the impressive, new, state-of-the-art facility. Food is now served from a central area before the boys disperse into their separate dining rooms to eat together

Page 6: 50th ANNIVERSARY - Old Andreanlow_res).pdf · Message from the Housemaster I am pleased to welcome all former Graham House boys and their partners to our 50th anniversary celebrations

as a house, retaining the sense of brotherhood and camaraderie between the houses.

Graham House’s close proximity to the College swimming pool and squash courts, as well as Knowling and Baxter fields gives the boys the perfect opportunity to get out and release some energy. Twice a term the boys get together for a house braai and enjoy some touch rugby and soccer on our lawns which is always a great way for the house to come together and spend some time away from our busy lives at school. Once a term we also have a Formal Dinner where the boys have a chance to dress up and enjoy an extra special meal from the kitchen. These meals are always considered a highlight of the term and are eagerly awaited. The overall positioning of Graham House and the space which surrounds it is one of its countless benefits and, along with the overall atmosphere of the House, Graham has become the house of choice for new boys. Within the first term of 2013 we managed to win the River Mile and our Grade 11s won the work trophy. Many boys have represented the Eastern Province for various sports teams and even more have received rewards for excellence. Having said this, the highlight of the year so far was our impressive win at the annual inter-house gala. Some outstanding individual performances and a great team contribution led to us winning the event for the first time in 13 years. Unfortunately, at the end of the first term, we were met with some terrible news which left Graham House in a time of mourning. On the 29th of March, Mathew Archer, a Grade 12 boy in Graham, passed away in a motorbike accident in Zimbabwe. Mat, brother of Courtney in Grade 11, was a House Prefect and held the Community Engagement portfolio at College. Mat was an Andrean in every sense of the word: humble, determined and always willing to serve others. His presence around the house is dearly missed and the hole he has left in Graham House is one that will never be refilled. Graham House is a place that we all hold very close to our hearts. For many of us, it is the place that shaped us to become who we are today and it is the place where we developed from boys into men. I hope you have the opportunity to catch up on what has been happening in Graham House and I look forward to meeting you during the course of the weekend. Kind regards

Messages from Old Andreans

Dear Graham House,

I will not be able to attend the 50th birthday celebrations of Graham House in September. However, my thoughts will be with all who do attend and with the House of today.

I must record some elements of the founding year of Graham as it was compiled from boys from other houses (just the new boys were not) and many of us who were “asked” to move from our original houses were reluctant to do so but were persuaded to do so as one’s move “was in the interests of College”. So we moved houses.

The first head of house and also head of school was Neil Street who moved from Merriman. Contrary to some versions of the history of the school, I was a College prefect and was the first vice head of Graham. I moved over from Upper. Another prefect was Anthony Kitson from Mullins, who would take over from me as vice head of house from the second term.

My Sixth Form year was cut short in the May holidays as my mother was tragically killed in a motor accident while we were on our way to Usutu Mission in Swaziland to visit Hugh Harker who was doing missionary work there at the time. For family reasons my father needed my presence at home as my younger brother Peter (Upper 1973) was only a lad of 6. I therefore left College immediately.

My term in Graham was a good one and I lived in “Littlewoods” in a suite-like room while

Page 12: 50th ANNIVERSARY - Old Andreanlow_res).pdf · Message from the Housemaster I am pleased to welcome all former Graham House boys and their partners to our 50th anniversary celebrations

I had to take responsibility for the new boys. As comfortable as my accommodation was for me, it was also in demand as a quiet rendezvous on Saturday afternoons for fellow prefects who needed time alone with their girlfriends. I helped by staying away for the requested times!

I also have strong memories of Roger Clark our Housemaster and of his family including the diminutive Antony; Many years later I was a member of the College Council Selection Board which asked Antony to become College’s Headmaster.

I pass these snippets of history on to Graham House and wish the House well as it moves towards its centenary.

Warmest Greetings,John Job (Dr) - 1963

Hello Luc,

My name is Graham Louden-Carter. I was in Graham House from 1965 to 1969 and will be coming over from the UK to attend the Anniversary celebrations in September, which my wife and I are very much looking forward to. The last time I was at Graham was when we came over for the Jubilee 150 celebrations and I was impressed with how the House has improved - looking at the photos on the website it is looking even better now!

I read your history of Graham on the website and thought I would point out that you have another Graham old boy who was awarded Springbok Colours - me - and I thought this could be added to the record. I played in the 1st XI hockey as goalkeeper in 1969 and also toured Rhodesia that year under the leadership of David Hodgson (A great mentor who I am still in contact with) and Ashley Brooker. I was also awarded hockey colours that year.

Regarding my time in Graham and at College, I strongly believe that I left as a much more mature and better equipped person than I would have been had I not been at the school. I was not an academic giant - no distinctions, but I improved over the years and achieved a university pass, I did not play in the rugby 1st XV or cricket 1st XI - but I found a sport that I could excel at and made the 1st XI and hockey colours (as well as being a reasonable high jumper during athletics season), I was not a house or school prefect - but I was a monitor in 1969 and learnt a great deal about leadership during that year (which helped me in my later career as a corporate executive).

I am really looking forward to meeting you in September and hopefully catching up with some of the boys from my era at Graham.

Best wishes,Graham Louden-Carter - 1969

Many congratulations to the Graham House community on this very special occasion. Graham was our home away from home for a combined 15 years between 1987 and 2002, and we look back on that period now as being some of the best years of our lives. Memories of the time and the place are numerous of course, though standing in the courtyard for early roll call on a winter’s morning is a small one. Dave says he can still hear that wake-up bell ringing if he casts his mind back! We’re proud to say that we were in Graham, and we urge the young men of 2013 and those of years to come to make the most of their time here – it’s over all too soon.

Restoration of The Old Military Gaol Cells by Santam

In between Van der Riet Lodge and Graham House are the remnants of one of the oldest buildings in Grahamstown, the Old Military Gaol Cells. It is a building of immense historical importance which has survived through the frontier town’s tumultuous 200 year history.

After a major storm in 2011 the wall collapsed and required hundreds of thousands of Rands to repair it to its former state. College had an obligation to restore this heritage building and we were most grateful to Santam, who paid out a substantial amount towards the repair and restoration.

Thank you to our insurers on their civic-mindedness and for responding to an appeal from College.

The restoration site is symbolic of the importance of preserving our history.

Joining us this weekend for the official unveiling of the plaque is Mr Vernon Adams (Relationship Manager, Santam)
