Anniversary of Indiana State University’s Distinguished Alumni Award 5 0 th 1957-2007 The purpose of the Distinguished Alumni Award is to provide recognition for the outstanding achievements of former students of Indiana State University. Only living alumni of Indiana State University, Indiana State College, Indiana State Teachers College, or Indiana State Normal School are eligible. The purpose of the Distinguished Alumni Award is to provide recognition

for the outstanding achievements of former students of Indiana State

University.

Only living alumni of Indiana State University, Indiana State College,

Indiana State Teachers College, or Indiana State Normal School are

Lillian Gay Berry*

Lillian Gay Berry received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1957. A 1895 graduate of Indiana State Normal School, she had an outstanding career as a professor of Latin. Berry, at the time she received the DAA, was professor emerita of Latin at Indiana University.

Helen Louise Gillum*

Helen Louis Gillum, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1957, graduated in 1915 from Indiana State Nor-mal School. Gillum was a professor of home economics and served with the U.S. Public Health Service. She was an outstanding teacher whose students considered her a part of their family.

Hilda Maehling*

Hilda Maehling was the first woman to serve as the assistant executive secretary of the National Education Association. A 1915 graduate from Indiana State Normal School, she was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1957 for her concern with the professional development and welfare of teachers.

Horace M. Powell*

Horace M. Powell was a research scientist at Eli Lilly and Company when he received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1957. A 1914 graduate of Indiana State Normal School, Powell was known as an expert in the field of scientific re-search and as a renowned bacteriologist.

Fitzhugh Traylor*

A graduate of Indiana State Normal School in 1920, Fitzhugh Traylor received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1957. His devotion to the insurance profession and his service to his community contributed to his selection for this award. At the time he received the DAA he was president of the American Society of Charted Life Underwriters.

Herald Rea Cox*

Herald Rea Cox, a 1958 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, graduated from Indiana State Normal School in 1928 with majors in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. His outstand-ing work in the field of science won him national attention for his contributions in developing vaccines for world-wide dis-eases. At the time he received the DAA, he was a research scientist with Lederle Pharmaceuticals.

Hallie Farmer*

Hallie Farmer, recipient of a 1958 Distinguished Alumni Award, graduated from Indiana State Normal School in 1916. She was an outstanding leader of women’s interests in busi-ness and professional women’s clubs, and in the American Association of University Women. Farmer was representative of the American college and university women whose pres-tige and power gained world-wide attention.

Robert E. Green*

Robert E. Green, who graduated from Indiana State Teach-ers College in 1933, became one of the major earth moving contractors in the United States. He was chosen as one of the nation’s top six self-made men in 1953 and received his alma mater’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1958. At the time he received the DAA, he was president of Green Construc-tion Co.

Roxy Lefforge*

Roxy Lefforge earned a two-year normal course certificate in 1913 from Indiana State Normal School, and a bachelors degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1924. She received a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1958 in recogni-tion of her religious and educational service in the Far East and the United States.

Dr. Wendell W. Wright*

Dr. Wendell W. Wright received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1958. A 1916 graduate from Indiana State Normal School, Wright was outstanding in his ability to solve difficult problems in higher education. He held positions in educa-tion throughout the State of Indiana and also acted as an educational advisor throughout the United States.

Herman L. Boyle*

A 1959 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Herman L. Boyle graduated from Indiana State Normal School in 1923. He worked for Standard Oil Company (later Amoco) for 40 years holding numerous positions within the company. Among his accomplishments was the successful set-up of the accounting systems for the company’s foreign holdings.

Charlotte Schweitzer Burford*

Charlotte Schweitzer Burford graduated in 1898 from Indiana State Normal School. In 1902, Burford joined the school’s faculty and in 1910 was appointed dean of women. Burford, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1959, gave her position a dignity and status that was recognized throughout the nation. She served with outstanding distinc-tion as dean until her retirement in 1946.

Robert Lafollette*

Robert Lafollette, a world traveler and teacher who provided outstanding service to the teaching and administrative professions, graduated from Indiana State Normal School in 1916. His work in international relations brought him recog-nition as a social studies specialist in Germany and earned him a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1959.

Edna S. Newman*

Edna S. Newman, a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1959, graduated in 1912 from Indiana State Nor-mal School. In 1949 she was named director of the Chicago Wesley Memorial School of Nursing, a position she retained until her retirement in 1954. She directed nursing service and nursing education in several of the largest hospitals in the United States.

Dr. Charles E. Rochelle*

Dr. Charles E. Rochelle, who graduated in 1917 from Indi-ana State Normal School, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1959. He was the first African American to receive the doctor of education degree from the University of Califor-nia at Berkeley in 1942. Rochelle was dedicated to education and service to community, state, and nation, and served as secretary-treasurer of the Commission on General Education, Indiana State Board of Education.

Dr. William E. Edington*

Dr. William E. Edington received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1960. A graduate of Indiana State Normal School in 1909, he was the first assistant professor of mathematics at Purdue University. Edington became head of the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy at DePauw University and retired from there with the rank of emeritus professor.

Dr. Edgar L. Morphet*

Dr. Edgar L. Morphet received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1960. A 1918 Indiana State Normal School gradu-ate, Morphet gained recognition through his contributions to public education on the state and national levels. At the time of his selection for the Distinguished Alumni Award he was the general consultant for a study of the curriculum and instructional program of the Montgomery County, Maryland Public Schools.

Dr. Mark C. Schinnerer*

A 1960 Distinguished Alumni Award, Dr. Mark C. Schinnerer graduated in 1920 from Indiana State Normal School. Fol-lowing graduation he joined the staff of the Cleveland City Schools and served in numerous positions from teacher to superintendent of schools.

Dr. Cecilia Schuck*

A 1922 Indiana State Normal School graduate, Dr. Cecilia Schuck received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1960. Schuck was selected as an award recipient due to her dis-tinguished service in education, business, and industry. In 1958 she retired from Purdue University as emerita professor of nutrition.

William E. Wilson*

William E. Wilson, who received a 1960 Distinguished Alumni Award, earned his master’s degree at Indiana State Teachers College in 1931. He received the award for his work in edu-cation on the local and state levels, including his selection in 1960 as a delegate to the White House Conference on Youth and Childhood.

Dr. Eldon Johnson*

Dr. Eldon Johnson received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1961. A 1929 Indiana State Teachers College graduate, Johnson was nationally and internationally recognized in the fields of public and high education and political and inter-national education relationships. Johnson was president of the University of New Hampshire at the time he received the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Paul S. Rhoads*

Dr. Paul S. Rhoads attended Indiana State Normal School from the fall of 1915 to the winter term in 1917, then joined the United States Army during World War I. He was recog-nized worldwide for medical education and research in infec-tious diseases. Selected in 1961 as a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Rhoads, at that time, was chairman of the Department of Medicine, Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital.

Victoria Evans Wagner

Victoria Evans Wagner earned bachelor degrees from Indi-ana State Normal School in 1922 and 1925. Wagner’s career in teaching, community involvement, and dedication to the Ethical Culture School earned her professional and civic recognition and contributed to her 1961 selection as a Distin-guished Alumni Award recipient. At the time of her selection, Wagner was director of the Ethical Culture Schools of New York City.

Delmer H. Wilson*

Delmer H. Wilson, a 1937 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1961. His selection for the award was based on his involvement in promotion of scouting programs in American and his contri-butions to the area of social services. Wilson was personnel director of the Boy Scouts of America when he received the award.

Dr. Paul A. Witty*

Dr. Paul A. Witty graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1920 and received a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1961. Witty was a pioneer in identifying and providing educational programs for gifted and talented children and youth. When selected for the award, Witty was professor of education and director of the Psycho-Educational Clinic at Northwestern University,

Dr. Hester Beth Bland*

Dr. Hester Beth Bland earned a two year certificate from Indi-ana State Normal College in 1927, and a bachelor of science degree in 1942. Bland received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1962 in recognition of her involvement with educa-tion regarding health, safety, and physical education on all levels. She was a consultant on health and physical educa-tion for the Indiana State Board of Health in 1962 at the time of her selection for the award.

Herbert J. Klausmeier

Herbert J. Klausmeier, a 1962 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1940. Klausmeier received the award for his work as an edu-cational psychologist and for his then position as a professor of educational psychology at the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Cecil Puckett*

A 1925 Indiana State Normal School graduate, Dr. Cecil Puckett received a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1962. Puckett was active in gaining national recognition for the field of business administration. He was vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Kansas and in charge of the Denver, Colorado branch when he received the award in 1962.

Dr. Sampson G. Smith*

Dr. Sampson G. Smith, at the time of his recipient of a Distin-guish Alumni Award in 1962, was superintendent of schools for Franklin Township of Somerset County, New Jersey. Smith earned a bachelor of science degree from Indiana State Nor-mal School in 1925, and was recognized as an outstanding educator. He received the award for his professional achieve-ments and his service to youth.

Dr. John J. Young*

Dr. John J. Young, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1962, graduated from Indiana State Normal School in 1921. He was a leader in educational administration and worked actively for legislation to improve schools. When selected for the award, Young was the superintendent of schools for the city of Mishawaka, Indiana.

Dr. J. Vernal Irons*

Dr. J. Vernal Irons received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1963 He was a 1927 graduate of Indiana State Normal School. Irons gained recognition throughout the Western Hemisphere as a scientist and researcher in the making of vaccines and toxoids. In 1963 when he received the Dis-tinguished Alumni Award, Irons was director of laboratories, Texas State Department of Health.

Dr. Alexander Jardine*

A1963 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Dr. Alexander Jardine graduated from Indiana State Normal School in 1926 with a bachelors degree. In 1934, he received a masters degree from Indiana State Teachers College. As well as his contributions as a teacher and administrator, Jardine worked on improving educational programs for students and teach-ers. At the time of receipt of the Distinguished Alumni Award, Jardine was superintendent of the South Bend, Indiana city schools.

Dr. Daisy Marvel Jones*

Dr. Daisy Marvel Jones, a 1963 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, earned a bachelors degree in 1931 and a mas-ters degree in 1933 from Indiana State Teachers College. Jones was selected for this recognition due to her outstand-ing contributions to public education. She was an associate professor of education at Arizona State University when she received the award.

Dr. Homer F. Marsh

Dr. Homer F. Marsh, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1963, earned a bachelors of science degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1930. Marsh, who worked in medical education for several years, helped organize the new School of Medicine at the University of Miami, in Coral Gables, Florida, in 1952. When selected for recognition by his alma mater, Marsh was vice president of the University of Tennessee in charge of the school’s medical units.

Dr. Clarence Pound*

Dr. Clarence Pound was chairman of educational administra-tion at Purdue University when he received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1963. Pound graduated from Indiana State Normal School in 1927. He received recognition for his work in public education and educational administration in Indiana, including solving major educational and administrative prob-lems throughout the state.

Dr. Max P. Allen*

A Distinguished Alumni Award recipient of 1964, Dr. Max P. Allen received his bachelors degree from Indiana State Normal School in 1928. Throughout his teaching and administrative career he made significant contributions to the profession. Allen was president of McKendree College at Lebanon, Illinois, at the time of receipt of his award.

Dr. Isaac K. Beckes*

Dr. Isaac K. Beckes received his alma mater’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1964. Beckes earned a bachelors in educa-tion from Indiana State Teachers College in 1935. He was recognized for his plans to develop a new campus and for bringing new programs to Vincennes University. Beckes also directed a nationwide program of the United Christian Youth movement. At the time he received the Distinguished Alumni Award, Beckes was president of Vincennes University.

Dr. Lowell H. Brammer*

Dr. Lowell H. Brammer, a 1964 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, received his bachelors degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1935. He was recognized for his con-tributions to his profession of fundraising and for his inter-est, loyalty, and contributions to his alma mater. Brammer received the award while holding the position of chairman of the board and administrative officer of American City Bureau/Beaver Associates, Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Martin D. Jenkins*

Dr. Martin D. Jenkins received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1964. A 1930 graduate of Indiana State Teach-ers College, he was recognized for his outstanding service to education. Jenkins received the award while serving as president of Morgan State College.

Dr. Ray G. Price*

Dr. Ray G. Price received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1964. Price, who earned his bachelors degree in education in 1928 from Indiana State Normal School, was recognized for his service to the promotion of business education. At the time of being selected for the award, Price was a professor of education at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Rupert N. Evans

Dr. Rupert N. Evans received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1965. A 1946 graduate of Indiana State Teach-ers College, he was recognized for his work with vocational and technical education. Evans was dean of the College of Education at the University of Illinois when he received the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Dr. Fred E. Harris*

Dr. Fred E. Harris earned a bachelors degree in 1940 and a masters degree in 1942 from Indiana State Teachers College. He was selected for a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1965. Harris was recognized for his contributions to elementary education and higher education administration. At the time of receipt of the award, Harris was the dean of the college and vice president for academic affairs of Baldwin-Wallace College.

Hortense Hurst*

Hortense Hurst received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1965. She was a 1924 graduate from Indiana State Normal School. Hurst was recognized for her administrative leader-ship in carrying out the provisions of state and federal legis-lation as they related to the development of home economics programs. Hurst, at the time of receipt of the award, was supervisor of home economics education in the Department of Public Instruction for the State of Indiana.

Dr. Clarence Lee Lloyd*

Dr. Clarence Lee Lloyd attended Indiana State Normal School from 1918 until 1922. He was recognized in 1965 with a Distinguished Alumni Award for his contributions to the field of medicine. Lloyd’s career included administration of medical programs for an airline corporation. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award while corporate medical director of North American Aviation, Inc. in Los Angeles, California.

Dr. Ethel L. Parker*

Dr. Ethel L. Parker received her bachelors degree from Indiana State Normal School in 1917. In 1965 she received a Distinguished Alumni Award for her contributions to home economics education. She was professor emeritus of home economics education at the University of Kentucky at the time she received the award.

Dr. Arville O. DeWeese*

Dr. Arville O. DeWeese, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1966, graduated from Indiana State Normal School in 1911. DeWeese was a pioneer in the field of student health services for colleges and universities, and was one of the founders of the American School Health Association. At the time of his selection for the Distinguished Alumni Award DeWeese was executive secretary of the American School Health Association; emeritus director of health service, Kent State University; and in private medical practice in Kent, Ohio.

Myra E. Janco Daniels

Myra E. Janco Daniels received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1966. Daniels graduated from Indiana State Teach-ers College with a bachelors degree in 1948 and a masters in 1954. She gained recognition for the depth of her research and market planning in the interest of clients, particularly in the fields of transportation, packaged goods, and fashions. When she received the Distinguished Alumni Award, Daniels was president of Draper Daniels, Inc., Chicago, Illinois.

Moral R. McArthur*

A 1933 Indiana State Teachers College graduate, Moral R. McArthur received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1966. McArthur gained national recognition for the progress he made in the exploration and acquisition of oil and gas. He was president and director of Rimrock Tidelands, Inc. in Shreveport, Louisiana when he received his award.

Sister M. Viatoria Schuller*

Sister M. Viatoria Schuller received her bachelors degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1934. She was recog-nized with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1966. Schuller’s award selection was the result of her contributions and in-valuable leadership in providing teaching sisters of the Order of St. Francis with an opportunity to further their education. At the time of receipt of the Distinguished Alumni Award, she was president of the University of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Dr. Ben F. Small*

Dr. Ben F. Small received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1966. Small, who received his bachelors degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1941, by 1951 was the youngest full professor on the Indiana University faculty. His profes-sional achievements in law education gained him profession-al recognition. Small was dean of the Indianapolis Division of the Indiana University Law School when he received his alma mater’s award.

Paul Benke

Paul Benke, a 1948 graduate of Indiana State Teachers Col-lege, was selected for a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1967. Benke was recognized for his unusual and outstanding suc-cess as a business executive. At the time of the award, he was president of Colt’s Firearms.

Dr. Lewis C. Dowdy*

Dr. Lewis C. Dowdy received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1967. Dowdy earned his masters degree in educational administration at Indiana State Teachers College in 1949. He was recognized as a leader in the field of education in North Carolina. At the time of receipt of the award, Dowdy was president of North Carolina Agriculture and Technical Col-lege.

Richard Huggins

Graduating from Indiana State Teachers College in 1951 with a bachelors degree in art education, Richard Huggins received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1967. Huggins was recognized as a devoted teacher and talented director in the field of industrial design, making significant contribu-tions in the eyeglass and silver industry. He was the director of design, Ophthalmic Division for Bausch and Lomb, Inc. at the time he received the award.

Donald E. McCathren

Recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1967, Donald E. McCathren graduated from Indiana State Teachers Col-lege’s Department of Music in 1947. He became the musical director of the world famous School Orchestra of America. McCathren was also the director of bands at the School of Music at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

Birch Bayh, Sr.*

Birch Bayh, Sr. received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1968. A 1917 graduate of the Indiana State Normal School, he was the first athletic director of his alma mater. Bayh also played an instrumental role in the establishment and organi-zation of the Physical Education Department. He was recog-nized for his significant achievements and contributions in health and physical fitness.

Warren N. Cordell*

Warren N. Cordell graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1933. His successful career in all phases of na-tional and international marketing research lead to his receipt of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1968. Cordell was also known for his world renowned collection of dictionaries. At the time of his selection for the Distinguished Alumni Award Cordell was the vice president and chief statistical officer of A.C. Nielsen Company.

Eva L. Goble

George Chestnut received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1969. He graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1934. Chestnut was recognized for his successful career in one of the nation’s giant industrial corporations, General Motors. At the time of the award, he was general manager of the AC Spark Plug Division of General Motors, Flint, Michigan.

Charles A. Bush*

Charles A. Bush, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1970, was a 1937 graduate of Indiana State Teach-ers College and an outstanding athlete. Following graduation he earned a reputation as a prominent educator in his com-munity. When he received the award Bush was superinten-dent of the Marshall, Illinois schools.

Dr. Robert Forney*

Known internationally as an expert in the field of toxicology, Dr. Robert Forney was a 1970 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award. Forney graduated from Indiana State Teach-ers College in 1937. When he received his award he was the president of the International Association of Forensic Toxi-cologists.

John J. O’Connell*

John J. O’Connell received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1970. A successful trial lawyer in the field of industrial rela-tions with expertise widely recognized by the steel industry, O’Connell graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1942. A graduate of Indiana State Normal School in 1917, Edward T. Ragsdale received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1970. A noted engineer, he rose to the position of vice presi-dent of Buick Motor Division, General Motors, before his re-tirement. Dr. Herbert W. Wey

Helen Ederle*

Helen Ederle received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1971. She graduated from Indiana State Normal School in 1923. With over half-a-century of service to the field of education she retired from teaching in 1970. Theodore K. Moore*

A 1928 graduate of Indiana State Normal School, Theodore K. Moore was a founder of the local Boys Club camp. When he received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1971, he was the director of the Terre Haute Boys Club.

A member of the 1938 graduating class of Indiana State Teachers College, David G. Bartram achieved a successful career as an investment banker and gained recognition as a partner in the New York City office of Ernst and Ernst, certi-fied public accountants. At the time of receipt of the award, Bartram was vice president and treasurer of Paine, Webber, Jackson and Curtis, Inc., stockbrokers and investment bank-ers, and an allied member of the New York Stock Exchange.

Wayne E. Fuson*

Wayne E. Fuson received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1972. He was a 1946 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College. Fuson was a recognized newspaper reporter and editor for sporting events who began his career as a reporter for the Terre Haute Star. He joined the Indianapolis News editorial staff in 1947, and served as a political writer, copy editor, and sports writer prior to becoming sports editor of the News in 1961.

Marguerite E. Taylor graduated from Indiana State Teach-ers College in 1939. She received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1972. As the first African American teacher in the Terre Haute schools, Taylor served as a supervisor over Indiana State University’s English and science student teach-ers, and was an instructor in the Upward Bound Program. A dedicated educator, her teaching career spanned 43 years.

Joanna Elizabeth Loveall Hock was a 1973 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. A 1952 elementary education gradu-ate of Indiana State Teachers College, Hock gained recogni-tion in the field of teaching. She provided successful admin-istrative leadership to professional educational groups, which benefited teaching, teachers, and society.

John T. Myers

John T. Myers, a 1951 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1973. Frank L. Miklozek, former Terre Haute postmaster, received his alma mater’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1974. A 1936 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, Miklozek made an enviable mark in serving the nation’s post office system as executive director of the American Post Masters Association.

Allen Sharp

A 1953 Indiana State Teachers College graduate, Allen Sharp received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1974. Sharp, one of the youngest judges in the federal judiciary, was also a successful practicing attorney. He was a respected judge presiding in the United States District Court, Northern District of Indiana.

Tom Trimble

Tom Trimble, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1974, earned distinction as a television art director. Trimble graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1946. For over 24 years Trimble’s television productions included That Was the Week That Was, The Merv Griffin Show, Jeopardy, and the Tim Conway Comedy Hour, among others.

A graduate of Indiana State Teachers College in 1957, Nasser made significant contributions to medicine through his practice of cardiology. Dr. James F. Kane

Dr. James F. Kane graduated from Indiana State Teach-ers College in 1958 and received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1976. Kane earned a national reputation for his work in professional organizations fostering higher education in the field of business. When he received the Distinguished Alumni Award he was the dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of South Carolina and served on the Accreditation Committee of the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business.

Mary Stevens Callicott* Mary Stevens Callicott received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1977. Max C. McCowen*

In 1977 when selected as a recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award, Max C. McCowen was head of a research team at Eli Lilly and Co. McCowen graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1937. He gained an international reputation as a research scientist and lead Lilly’s research in the development of products to improve water quality and aquatic environments.

John J. Suggs

Colonel John J. Suggs graduated from Indiana State Teach-ers College in 1939. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1977. Suggs spent 26 years in the United States Air Force and received many military awards including the Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters. Donald G. Canedy

Donald G. Canedy received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1978. After graduating from Indiana State Teachers College in 1951 he had a distinguished career as a music educator who was credited with development of innovations in marching band techniques. When he received his award he was the director of marketing for the Rogers/Rhodes Instruments Division of CBA.

Sue McNaught Dye

A 1951 Indiana State Teachers College graduate, Sue McNaught Dye received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1978. A teacher of journalism and English, Dye was co-editor and author of several books and articles. She became majority whip of the Senate of the State of Arizona and was a strong advocate for consumer interests and anti-discrimi-natory practices.

D. Bailey Merrill*

D. Bailey Merrill, a 1978 Distinguished Alumni Award recipi-ent, graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1933. Active in politics and civic affairs for many years, Merrill was an early worker for civil rights. In 1953 he was elected to the U.S. Congress as the representative of Indiana’s 8th District. A former president of the Evansville Bar Association he headed the law firm of Merrill, Schroeder, and Johnson retir-ing from the firm as a senior member.

Dr. Joseph Wittmer

Dr. Joseph Wittmer received his Distinguished Alumni Award in 1978. Wittmer has three degrees from his alma mater—bachelors and masters degrees from Indiana State Teach-ers College in 1959 and 1960 respectively, and a doctor of philosophy in 1968 from Indiana State University. He was a nationally known consultant to business, education, and government agencies in the field of interpersonal relations. At the time he received the award he was chairman of the Counselor Education Department at the University of Florida.

Gene E. Brooks*

Gene E. Brooks received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1979. Brooks graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1953. He was judge of the Bankruptcy Court for the southern district of Indiana and earned national recognition as an expert in bankruptcy proceedings. When he received the award he was judge of the United States District Court, Southern District of Indiana.

Dr. John E. Dow, Jr.

Dr. John E. Dow, Jr. graduated from Indiana State College in 1963 and received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1979. Dow had a successful career as a mathematics and sci-ence teacher, as an assistant director and superintendent of education, and as a consultant to many regional and national organizations. Thomas (Tommy) Edward John

A 1964 graduate of Indiana State College Thomas (Tommy) Edward John gained distinction as a professional athlete. John pitched for the New York Yankees in the World Series. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1979.

Paul R. Miller*

Paul R. Miller, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1979, had a 42-year career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A 1928 graduate of Indiana State Normal School, Miller was a plant pathologist and epidemiologist. He repre-sented the United States at several international conferences dealing with crop and food production and published a major two-volume multilingual work on plant disease.

Dr. Benny Ray Bailey

Dr. Benny Ray Bailey earned a masters degree at Indiana State University in 1968. Bailey, who has gained distinction for his pioneering work in rural health care, was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1980. When he received the award he was executive director of the East Kentucky Health Service Center, Inc.

Herbert Ingram Lamb*

Herbert Ingram Lamb received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1980. He graduated from Indiana State Normal School with a bachelors degree in 1927 and a masters in 1933. Lamb was the first senior class president to participate in the Book and Torch Ceremony. He served on the Alumni Council and on the Board of Trustees and brought honor to his alma mater through his contributions to the community, the state, and the nation.

William J. McFarland

William J. McFarland received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1980. A 1960 graduate of Indiana State Teach-ers College, McFarland headed the nation’s leading olive-processing company and largest supplier of bulk wine. He was president of the Early California Foods, Inc. when he received the Distinguished Alumni Award. The firm was the flagship of Early California Industries, Inc.

Bernard L. Render, Jr.*

A 1950 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, Colonel Bernard L. Render, Jr. had a long and distinguished career in the United States Army. Recipient of a 1980 Distinguished Alumni Award from his alma mater, Render also received rec-ognition for his 40 years of military service. Among his many decorations and awards were the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.

Dr. Alva L. Davis*

Dr. Alva L. Davis, who was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1981, graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1938. Davis was an educator and pioneer in the teaching of English as a foreign language. When he received the award he was professor emeritus of English and linguis-tics at Illinois Institute of Technology.

Max L. Lenderman

Max L. Lenderman earned a bachelors in 1965 and a masters in 1966 from Indiana State University. Lenderman was select-ed as a 1981 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for his success as a teacher and artist. When he received the award he was associate professor of textile design in the School for American Craftsmen at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Suzanne Turner

Suzanne Turner received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1981. She graduated from Indiana State College with a bachelors in 1964 and then in 1972 from Indiana State University with a masters in criminology. When she received the award she was the commissioner of the Bureau of Social Services for Kentucky’s Department of Human Resources. Turner gained distinction for her work in social services in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky.

Dr. Holly Wilson-Green

Dr. Holly Wilson-Green earned bachelors and masters degrees from Indiana State University in 1969 and 1970 respectively. She was the first woman to earn a bachelors degree in athletic training at Indiana State, the third woman to be admitted to the National Athletic Trainers Association, and the first woman certified trainer to serve in the 1976 Summer Olympic Games. She was selected for a 1981 Distinguished Alumni Award while serving as a consultant in sports medicine with the American Red Cross in San Francisco, California.

Ward E. Brown*

Ward E. Brown received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1982. He graduated with a bachelors degree in 1949 from Indiana State Teachers College. Brown received numerous citations and wide acclaim for his years of service as an athlete, teacher, administrator, and public servant to Indiana’s schools. When he received the DAA he was commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

Margaret Gisolo

Margaret Gisolo, a United States Navy Lieutenant Com-mander during World War II, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1982. A graduate of Indiana State Teachers College in 1935, she pursued a career in dance and teach-ing, and was the founder and originator of the Arizona Arts Alliance. When she received the award she was professor emerita of dance at Arizona State University.

Kenneth L. Peek, Jr.

A 1982 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Major General Kenneth L. Peek, Jr. received the Distinguished Alumni Award. He graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1954. When he received the award he held the rank of major general in the United States Air Force and was sta-tioned at the Pentagon as director of Personnel Plans, DCS/Manpower and Personnel, Headquarters, United States Air Force.

Joseph S. Sims

Joseph S. Sims graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1958. Following graduation he earned national distinction for his outstanding work in journalism, public relations, government affairs, and international public affairs. Sims was selected in 1982 for a Distinguished Alumni Award. When he received the award he was vice president for public affairs of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Weir Richard Kirk*

Weir Richard Kirk was a 1983 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. He graduated from Indiana State Teachers College with a bachelors in 1940 and a masters in 1953. Kirk was also the recipient of the Humanitarian Award from the National Association of Health and Services Executives. When he received the DAA he was the director of develop-mental credentialing for the American College of Hospital Administrators.

Emma Riggs

Emma Riggs graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1939. She was selected for the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1983. Riggs’ work in the area of nutrition was honored by the California Home Economics Association with a Service Award. She was also cited for her service to the California State Department of Education. When she received the award she was president of the 50,000-member American Home Economics Association.

Dr. Raymond E. Sparks*

Dr. Raymond E. Sparks’ efforts as a participant, coach, and promoter of college wrestling programs, led to his selection for the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1983. A 1930 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, during World War II Sparks served as an athletic officer in the Navy Aviation Training Program. Among his many awards and recognitions was being named the 1981 recipient of the Max Rappoport Award, the highest honor presented by Wrestling USA Magazine for outstanding contributions to the sport.

Mabel Evans Cason*

Mabel Evans Cason, a 1938 Indiana State Teachers College graduate, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1984. Cason earned respect and admiration for her work in educa-tion and her contributions to the betterment of society. She was consultant to the personnel director of the St. Paul, Min-nesota Public Schools when she received the DAA.

Dr. Charles Hardaway*

Dr. Charles Hardaway served Indiana State University for 30 years. A 1947 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, Hardaway’s service was recognized in 1984 with the Distin-guished Alumni Award. A devoted Sycamore, he held posi-tions in both the administration and faculty units of his alma mater. He was retired from Indiana State University when he received his award.

William R. Hopper

William R. Hopper received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1984. He earned a bachelors degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1961 and a masters in 1966 from Indi-ana State University. Hopper brought national recognition to programs that stimulated children to read. He also served as project director for the U.S. Department of Education’s Follow Through Program. When he received the DAA he was principle of the Tecumseh Harrison Elementary School in Vincennes, Indiana.

Dr. William Joseph Mankin*

A 1948 Indiana State Teachers College graduate, Dr. William Joseph Mankin received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1984. Mankin earned honors as a physician and surgeon and served as chief of staff and as a member of the board of directors of a local hospital. When he received the DAA he was president of the staff of Terre Haute’s Union Hospital.

J. Roberts Dailey*

J. Roberts Dailey, considered one of the most powerful men in Indiana’s state government, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1985. Daily graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1941 and served three terms in Indiana’s House of Representatives. He was formally elected and sworn in as Speaker of the 102nd Indiana General Assembly in November 1980.

Dr. Eleanor Forsythe St. John*

Dr. Eleanor Forsythe St. John, who founded the IWISO the forerunner of Indiana’s AIAW, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1985. St. John graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1935. As a long-term faculty mem-ber at her alma mater, she instituted scholarships for female athletes and was the force behind the great success of the women’s athletic programs.

Dr. Phillip Summers

A writer and speaker on subjects that ranged from academic accreditation to science and technology’s roles in education, Dr. Phillip Summers was recognized with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1985. Summers earned his doctoral degree at Indiana State University in 1974. When he received the award he was president of Vincennes University.

Janice Loudermilk Knuth

Janice Loudermilk Knuth was awarded a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1986. A 1960 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, she has made significant contributions to the well-being of blind and low vision adults and other multi-handicapped visually impaired persons. Knuth was the founder and president of the National Organization for Albi-nism and Hypopigmentation.

Dr. Katharine Webb

After earning her doctoral degree at Indiana State Univer-sity in 1972, Dr. Katharine Webb received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1986. She was nominated and confirmed by the New York Senate as one of three commissioners of the New York Commission of Corrections. Webb later became director of guidance and counseling of the New York State Department of Correctional Services.

Dr. A. Elwood Adams*

A 1986 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Dr. A. Elwood Adams earned his bachelors degree at Indiana State Normal School in 1927. Adams had a notable 44-year career in edu-cation as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. In 1982, Adams and his wife, Juneth, established the A. Elwood and Juneth S. Adams Endowment Fund to benefit the College of Education.

Robert C. Mardis*

Since 1949, Robert C. Mardis has served as a teacher and principal in the Vigo County School Corp. Mardis, who gradu-ated from Indiana State Teachers College with a bachelors in 1949 and a masters in 1951, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1987. At that time, he was principal of Ben-jamin Franklin Elementary School in Terre Haute.

Dr. Cynthia Shepard Perry

Dr. Cynthia Shepard Perry received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1987. She was a 1968 graduate of Indiana State University. Her career included positions in the private busi-ness sector, in education, and in foreign relations with her appointment by President Reagan as ambassador to Sierra Leone. She also served as chief of the Agency for Inter-national Development Bureau on Educational and Human Resources for Africa.

Michael Simmons

Michael Simmons received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1987. He graduated from Indiana State College in 1964. Since then he has become known as a motivation speaker and leader in the information systems industry. When he received the award he was president of the largest private industry computer system in the world.

Rex E. Breeden

Rex E. Breeden was a 1942 graduate of Indiana State Teach-ers College. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1988. Following his college graduation, he founded the Brex Corporation, a water-conditioning firm in Columbus, Indiana, in 1946. He also founded and was a partner of a real estate brokerage firm. Breeden became the sole owner of Breeden Reality in 1958.

P. Pete Chalos*

P. Pete Chalos received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1988. He graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1949 with a bachelors and in 1950 with a masters. When he received his award he was a member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and president of the Indiana Democratic Mayors Association. Chalos was recognized as a progressive leader and excellent city administrator and served as the mayor of Terre Haute.

Gerald I. Lamkin

Gerald I. Lamkin completed a bachelors in 1960 from Indi-ana State Teachers College and a masters in 1963 from Indi-ana State College. Lamkin, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1988, was a leader in the development of higher education for the field of vocational education. When he received the award he was president of Indiana Voca-tional Technical College and president of the Ivy Tech Foun-dation.

Burnita Laybold Hershfield

Burnita Laybold Hershfield, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1989, earned her bachelors nursing degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1959. In 1965 she completed a masters degree in education at Indiana State University. Hershfield worked for Union Hospital in Terre Haute from 1944 until her retirement in 1986, serving in a variety of capacities, including 17 years as director of patient care.

James L. Hill

James L. Hill received his alma mater’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1989. Hill graduated from Indiana State College in 1965 with a bachelors and completed his masters in 1966 at Indiana State University. His career has included positions in student affairs, teaching, and as a wrestling coach. When he received the award he was vice president for student affairs at Central Michigan University.

Dr. James W. Kilman

Dr. James W. Kilman graduated from Indiana State TeachersCollege in 1956. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1989. When he received the award he was profes-sor of surgery at Ohio State University and chairman of the Department of Thoracic Surgery of Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Z. Mae Jimison

Z. Mae Jimison was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1990. She graduated from Indiana State University in 1973 with a bachelors degree and completed her masters at Indiana State University in 1976. Jimison earned distinc-tion as a lawyer, defender, master commissioner in Criminal Division II, and presiding judge in Criminal Division VI. At the time of the award she was an associate presiding judge in the Criminal Division of Marion Superior Court in Indianapolis.

Dr. Ruth Schuessler Jones

Dr. Ruth Schuessler Jones, a 1963 graduate of Indiana State College, was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1990. Jones earned distinction for her teaching and research in political science. At the time of the award, Jones was vice president and president-elect of the Southwest Social Sci-ence Association and professor of political science at Ari-zona State University.

Duane Klueh

Duane Klueh earned a bachelors degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1949 and his masters degree in 1951, and returned to his alma mater in 1955 as basketball coach. Klueh, who had an outstanding career in education and coaching, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1990. He was professor emeritus of physical education at Indiana State when he received the award.

Dr. Kamlesh P. Lulla

Dr. Kamlesh P. Lulla, a 1991 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, earned his doctoral degree from Indiana State University in 1983. Lulla has earned distinction in the field in environmental and space sciences. At the time of receipt of the award, Lulla was lead mission scientist, astronaut train-ing specialist, and coordinator for environmental training at NASA.

Susan Porter Rose

Susan Porter Rose was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1991. She completed a masters degree at Indiana State University in 1970. Rose has been recognized for outstanding service to the nation. She was deputy assistant to the president and chief of staff to Barbara Bush at the time she received the DAA.

Dr. Jeffry L. Vaught

Dr. Jeffry L. Vaught graduated from Indiana State University with a bachelors in chemistry in 1974. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1991. Vaught earned dis-tinction in the pharmaceutical industry as a researcher and developer of new drugs. At the time he received the DAA, Vaught was vice president of research at Cephalon, Inc. in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Robert J. Fischer

After completing a bachelors degree in 1969 and a masters degree in 1971 from Indiana State University, Robert J. Fischer became a respected mathematics teacher and coach. In 1992 he was selected as a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. At that time, he had been a Vigo Country School Corporation teacher for 23 years and an adjunct faculty member at the University.

Dr. Robert H. Jerry, II

Dr. Robert H. Jerry, II graduated magna cum laude from Indiana State University in 1974. By the time he was 35 he had completed a law degree, practiced law, and taught at the university level. For his achievements he was awarded a 1992 Distinguished Alumni Award. At that time, he was dean of the University of Kansas, School of Law in Lawrence, Kansas.

Dr. Sally Knox

Dr. Sally Knox was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1992. She graduated from Indiana State University in 1966. Knox earned distinction in the field of nursing. At the time of the award, she was vice president of nursing and patient ser-vices at the University Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida and clinical associate dean at the University of Florida.

Bruce Baumgartner

Bruce Baumgartner, who graduated from Indiana State University in 1982, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1993. Baumgartner earned distinction as a world class athlete and coach, winning two gold and one silver Olympic Medals in wrestling. At the time he received the DAA, Baumgartner was head wrestling coach at the University of Pennsylvania, Edinboro.

Dr. Paul Siebenmorgen

Dr. Paul Siebenmorgen, who earned his bachelors degree at Indiana State Teachers College in 1941, completed a medical degree after serving in World War II. Siebenmorgen earned a reputation as one of Terre Haute’s most respected family practitioners and was active in service to his alma mater. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1993. At the time, he had been a family practitioner in Terre Haute since 1947.

Dr. Paul Anthony Zeiss

Dr. Paul Anthony Zeiss was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1993. He graduated from Indiana State Uni-versity with a bachelors in 1968 and a masters in 1972. Zeiss earned distinction for his involvement in the field of commu-nity college education and development. At the time of the award, Zeiss was president of Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dr. Oliver C. Bumb*

Dr. Oliver C. Bumb, a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient in 1994, graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1933. Bumb earned distinction in higher education adminis-tration. At the time of the award, he was executive director of the Community Foundation of Muncie/Delaware County, Indiana.

Dr. Candace Miklozek McNulty

Dr. Candace Miklozek McNulty was awarded the Distin-guished Alumni Award in 1994. She graduated from Indiana State University in 1970. McNulty earned distinction in the field of internal medicine and cardiology. At the time of the award, she was a member of Sierra Nevada Cardiology As-sociates in Reno, Nevada.

Dr. Andrew Calvin Porter

Dr. Andrew Calvin Porter, an expert in education research, was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1994. He graduated from Indiana State College in 1963. Porter was di-rector of the Wisconsin Center for Education Research at the University of Wisconsin —Madison, at the time he received the DAA.

Paul Brill

Paul Brill dedicated his life and career to the betterment of Native American communities. His work in this area was rec-ognized with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1995. At that time he was superintendent of the Ute Mountain Ute Agency in Towaoc, Colorado. Brill earned a bachelors degree in 1953 from Indiana State Teachers College.

Dr. DeWitt Owen, Jr.*

Awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1995, Dr. DeWitt Owen, Jr. graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1949. Owen earned distinction as a specialist in the care and treatment of racing thoroughbreds At the time of the award, he had been practicing equine veterinary medicine for over40 years.

Dr. Mary Ann Carroll

Dr. Mary Ann Carroll holds a bachelors and masters degree from Indiana State Teachers College, earned in 1950 and 1955, and completed a doctoral degree in 1963 from Indiana State College. Carroll gained recognition for her leadership in the field of graduate education and served as dean of the School of Graduate Studies at her alma mater. At the time she received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1996, Carroll was director of governmental affairs and assistant to the president at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Patrick R. Ralston

Patrick R. Ralston was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1996. He graduated from Indiana State University with a bachelors in 1972 and a masters in 1973. Ralston has received numerous awards for his work in the fields of natural resources and the environment. When he received his DAA, Ralston was director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Dr. Maynard Leslie Rich

Dr. Maynard Leslie Rich graduated from Indiana State Teach-ers College with bachelors and masters degrees in 1951 and 1954. Rich, who received a 1996 Distinguished Alumni Award, earned distinction in the field of education and psychology. At the time of the award, he was professor and director of the Biofeedback Center at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina.

Dr. David A. Williams

Dr. David A. Williams was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1996. He graduated magna cum laude from Indi-ana State University in 1975. Williams has been recognized for his research in pediatric hematology and oncology. When he received the DAA, he was professor of pediatrics and professor of medical and molecular genetics at Indiana Uni-versity School of Medicine. He was also at that time affiliated with Riley Hospital for Children.

Dr. Dwight Conquergood*

Dr. Dwight Conquergood graduated from Indiana State Uni-versity in 1972. Since graduation he has earned distinction as a researcher of refugee and immigrant camps. Conquer-good was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1997. When he received the award, he was the Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence at Northwest-ern University and chair of the Department of Performance Studies.

Sam J. DiGiovanni

Sam J. DiGiovanni, who was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1997, graduated from Indiana State Teach-ers College in 1952. He joined Arthur Anderson and Co. in 1952, and remained with that company for 34 years, ultimate-ly becoming partner in charge of worldwide utilities. When he received the DAA he was chairman of the board for REGIT, and a director of Piedmont Natural Gas Company, Charlotte, North Carolina.

Warner H. Paige, III

Warner H. Paige, III graduated from Indiana State University with a bachelors in marketing in 1966. He earned distinction in the field of music as part of his family’s music store which specialized in providing music education and band and or-chestra instruments to Indiana schools and residents. Paige received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1966. At that time he was the fourth-generation to run the family’s music store, Paiges Music Shop.

Linda Watson Pellegrini was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1997. A 1971 graduate of Indiana State University, she has been a teacher and business leader and served on numerous boards in the State of Florida. When she received the award Pellegrini was president of a custom home building company, Pellegrini Homes, Inc.

Dr. Ronald L. Vaughn

An Indiana State University graduate, Dr. Ronald L. Vaughn earned his bachelors in 1968 and his masters in 1970. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1997. Vaughn earned distinction in the fields of marketing and higher education. When he received the award, he was president of the University of Tampa.

Ron Carpenter

Ron Carpenter graduated from Indiana State University with a bachelors in 1977 and with his masters in 1982. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998. Jack A. Davis

Jack A. Davis earned bachelors and masters degrees from Indiana State University in 1968 and 1974, respectively. Davis had an outstanding career in the United States Marine Corp, rising to the rank of brigadier general and receiving the Legion of Merit, a Purple Heart, and a Bronze Star. He was awarded his alma mater’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998. At the time of the award, Davis was a special agent for the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

Dr. Thomas G. DeLoughery

Dr. Thomas G. DeLoughery was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998. A 1981 graduate of Indiana State University, DeLoughery has earned distinction in the field of medicine and received numerous honors and awards. When he received the DAA, he was associate director of transfusion medicine, and associate professor of medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University.

Joseph Dulin

Joseph Dulin graduated from Indiana State College with a masters degree in 1963. He earned distinction for his African American educational innovations. Dulin was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1998. When he received the award, he was principal of Roberto Clemente Student Devel-opment Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Dr. Spiro B. Mitsos

Dr. Spiro B. Mitsos was awarded his alma mater’s Distin-guished Alumni Award in 1998. A 1952 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, Mitsos earned distinction in the field of psychology and as co-founder of Res-Care, Inc. which symbolized his concern for populations with special needs. When he received his DAA he was serving as clinical director and a member of the board and treasurer of Res-Care, Inc.

Jill Fairhurst Taylor Hall

Jill Fairhurst Taylor Hall earned a bachelors degree in 1981 and a masters degree in 1986 from Indiana State University. She was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999 for her innovations and dedication to education. Hall gained state recognition for her booklet, The Empty Desk, written from her own experience, that shares the problems teach-ers with a terminally ill child in their class must face. At the time she received the DAA, Hall was a third grade teacher at Brown Elementary School in Brownsburg, Indiana.

David J. Kirk

David J. Kirk was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999. He graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1947. Kirk earned distinction through his broadcasting and motivational speaking. At the time he received the award, he was retired after serving as Terre Haute’s WTHI-TV weather-man for 25 years.

Howard Sharpe*

A 1940 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, Howard Sharpe was the winningest coach in Indiana high school basketball. Sharpe, who had 759 career victories at retire-ment, was recognized statewide for his teaching/coaching skills. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999. At the time, Sharpe had retired as a teacher and coach.

Dr. John P. Smyth

Dr. John P. Smyth, who at one time was director of all United States Olympic Training Centers, was awarded a Distin-guished Alumni Award in 1999. Smyth earned a bachelors at Indiana State University in 1965, and in 1966 was one of the first to complete a masters in ISU’s School of Health and Hu-man Performance. He has had a distinctive career in health and physical education. Smyth was senior director of sports services for the United States Olympic Committee when he received the DAA.

Dr. Stephen L. Williams

Dr. Stephen L. Williams was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999. A 1971 graduate of Indiana State University, Williams later earned distinction in the field of law. He was presented with the Trial Lawyer of the Year Award in 1989, and named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Evan Bayh in 1990. When he received his DAA, Williams was a partner and trial lawyer with the Mann Law Firm in Terre Haute.

Michael J. Alley

Michael J. Alley, who is a 1987 graduate of Indiana State University, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000. Alley has been a dedicated and hardworking volunteer and served on many community and educational boards and councils. In recognition of this service, he received numerous awards including the HOPE Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He was president and CEO of Fifth Third Bank of Indiana when he received the DAA.

Alan R. Barcus

Alan R. Barcus graduated from Indiana State Teacher’s Col-lege in 1960. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000. Barcus, who spent 30 years of his life composing music and writing lyrics, was a 1999 inductee into the Univer-sity’s Athletics Hall of Fame for being an outstanding athlete. At the time he received the DAA, he was president of Barcus Enterprises, Inc.

Dr. Linda Chezem

Dr. Linda Chezem, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000, had a varied career working with Indiana’s 4-H program, teaching agriculture, and eventually, in law. Chezem graduated from Indiana State University in 1968. At the time she received the DAA, she was a senior judge appointed by the Indiana Supreme Court.

Kathryn Politz

Named Indiana’s 2000 Teacher of the Year by the State Department of Education, Kathryn Politz holds two degrees from Indiana State University. Politz, a 2000 Distinguished Alumni recipient, earned a bachelors at Indiana State in 1970 and a masters in 1988. When she received the DAA, she was a teacher-in-residence with the Indiana Department of Education.

James W. Thomas

James W. Thomas received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000. He was a 1973 graduate of Indiana State University. Thomas had worldwide responsibility as director of Global Services for IBM when he was selected as an award recipi-ent. He earned distinction as a leader in providing informa-tion technology services.

Mark J. Blade

Mark J. Blade received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001. A 1976 graduate from Indiana State University, Blade was a dedicated public servant, having served as the Indiana State Senator for the 38th District. Susie Thurman Dewey

A distinguished educator who served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II, Susie Thurman Dewey earned her bachelors degree at Indiana State Teachers College in 1940. The recipient of the Bronze Star for her military service, Dewey received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001. At that time, she was a retired Vigo County School Corporation English teacher.

Dr. Keith Winfield Dickey

Dr. Keith Winfield Dickey earned a bachelors in life sciences from Indiana State University in 1972. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001. Dickey was an associate professor at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine and section head of Dental Practice Management when he received the award.

Suzanne Wilson McKowen

A Distinguished Alumni Award recipient in 2001, Suzanne Wilson McKowen graduated Indiana State Teachers Col-lege in 1953. McKowen served as a teacher, principal, and administrator in the development of educational policy for Indiana and Illinois schools. Albert F. Stevens

Albert F. Stevens received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001. He graduated from Indiana State Teachers College in 1961 with a bachelors degree and earned his masters of business administration at Indiana State University in 1969. Stevens earned distinction as an inventor and co-inventor, and served as president and CEO of Opex Corporation for many years. When he received the DAA he was chairman of the board for Opex Corporation.

E. Ronald Culp

E. Ronald Culp was a respected and recognized leader in communications and business who received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002. Culp graduated from Indiana State University in 1970. He was senior vice president of public relations and government affairs for Sears, Roebuck and Co. when he received the award.

Dr. Herman L. Davis

Norman L. Lowery

Norman L. Lowery received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002. A 1969 graduate of Indiana State University, he has earned recognition for being an active financial and civic leader. He was president and CEO of Terre Haute First National Bank and vice chairman and vice president of First Financial Corp at the time he received his award.

Carolene R. Mays

Carolene R. Mays, a 1985 graduate of Indiana State Univer-sity, has had active careers in business and journalism. A 2002 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award, she was also active in community and educational organizations in the Indianapolis area. At the time she received her alma mater’s award, Mays was president and general manager of the Indianapolis Recorder newspaper.

Kasivat Paruggamanont

Kasivat Paruggamanont received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002. A 1975 masters degree graduate of Indiana State University, Paruggamanont has an outstanding career in his country’s foreign service. His service to Thailand has been recognized by receipt of the Knight’s Grand Cross of the Most Noble Order of the White Elephant. He was a rep-resentative of the Thailand government and consul-general of Thailand assigned to the Chicago Illinois area when he received the DAA.

Dr. Harriet D. Darrow

Dr. Harriet D. Darrow earned a bachelors degree (1954), a masters degree (1956), and a doctorate degree (1959) from Indiana State Teachers College. She was a recognized expert in education and served her alma mater in a variety of teach-ing and administrative positions. In 2003 she was selected as a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award. At that time, she held emerita status from her positions as professor, dean, and associate vice president at Indiana State.

Edwin A. Hill

Edwin A. Hill earned his bachelors degree from Indiana State University in 1973. Hill has gained national attention for his innovations in the field of human resources. When he received the DAA in 2003 he was vice president of human resources for Janssen Pharmaceutica, Inc.

Paul C. Lo

A leading force and outspoken supporter of economic growth and international trade between China and the United States, Paul C. Lo received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2003. Lo graduated from Indiana State University with a masters of business administration degree in 1970. He was chairman of the Far East National Bank when he was recog-nized with the award.

Dr. Thomas L.E.C. Moore received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2003. He earned his masters degree in 1988 and a doctorate degree in 1991 from Indiana State University. When he received the award he was president of Thomas Moore Enterprises, Inc. Moore has gained distinction as a nationally recognized early childhood consultant, author, and children’s recording artist.

Casey has been recognized for his experience and expertise in criminal justice, law enforcement, and intel-ligence gathering. He was CEO and president of Millennium Capital Group, a private investment firm, when he received the award.

Nancy Price Ralston

Nancy Price Ralston received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004. Recognized for her outstanding service in the field of elementary education and her innovative ideas for Indiana’s educational policies, Ralston was also awarded Indiana State’s Jones Medal in 2000. Mary Beth Seaward

Mary Beth Seaward has been recognized for her work in the field of medicine. A proficient researcher and author, Sea-ward earned bachelor and masters degrees from Indiana State University in 1969 and 1972, respectively. She was selected as a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004. At that time, she was research coordinator for the West Central Indian Area Health Education Center and a medical specialist with the Terre Haute Center for Medical Education.

William L. Lister

A recog-nized leader in the pharmaceutical field, Lister was appoint-ed to the board of the Indiana Health and Educational Facility Financing Authority at the time he received the award. Clyde R. Kersey earned his bachelors degree at Indiana State University in 1971 and completed his masters in1975. A recognized educator and community leader, Kersey re-ceived the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2006. At that time, he was serving as an Indiana state representative.

When she received the DAA, she was an adjunct professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Medical Sciences in Bloomington, Indiana.
