Franklin Institute’s Exhibit‘Tutankhamun and the

Golden Age of the Pharaohs’ Bus TripTuesday, April 10 $74 per person includes trans-portation, fees, and gratuities.Trip has been sold out, but we are taking a waiting list incase of cancellations.

The Library will be hosting a number of programs andactivities in celebration of our 50th anniversary be-ginning with National Library Week, Sunday, April 15- Saturday, April 21. The following are just some ofthe upcoming activities. Watch for others in the May/June issue of The Source, due out in late April.

Special Children’s Program:Little Golden Books Party featuring

The Poky Little Puppy For children 3 years old through those in grade 3. 11-11:30am or 4:30-5pm Meet the book character “Poky Little Puppy,” watch amovie, enjoy some snacks and enter a Little Golden BookRaffle! Registration is not required. West Islip SchoolDistrict residents only please.

Join us for tasty afternoon of R&B, rock and roll, bluesand jazz when long-time library associate, Jim Moran,returns with his band to help the library celebrate its 50th!Jim is noted for his incredible guitar work and has playedwith numerous artists including Al Jardine, Phoebe Snowand Stanley Jordan. He and his band are regulars on theLong Island and New York club scene. Register now atthe Reference Desk of the Library.

Senior Art Show and Reception

Friends Afternoon Teafeaturing the West Islip String EnsembleJoin us for a Tea sponsored by the Friends of theLibrary, on Sunday, May 20 featuring a performanceby the String Ensemble of the West Islip SymphonyOrchestra. West Islip School District community members are in-vited to display up to two pieces of original art work inour gallery hall. As this is the library’s 50th anniversarywe would love to be able to display any original photo-graphs or artwork of the library taken over the years!All materials must be framed and suitable for hanging.We will have a reception for all our artists on Sun-day, May 6, at 2pm. Sign up at the Reference Deskbeginning March 19th.

Children’s 50th Anniversary Poetry ContestApril is National Poetry Month. In keeping with our 50thAnniversary celebration, the Children’s Department is spon-soring a poetry contest for students grades 1-6. The themeis “Why I Love My Library”. Original poems can besubmitted to the Children’s Department-please note thedeadline has been extended to April 15. Contact theChildren’s Department at 661-7080 for details.

The library is organizing a sampler of recipes from staffmembers, past and present, in honor of our 50th Anniver-sary. This publication will be distributed at our 50th Anni-versary Celebration in June..

Pre-school Sock Hop Dance WorkshopWednesday, May 16 10:30 or 11:30

The library will sponsor a Sock Hop Dance Workshop forchildren ages 3-5. Register beginning Saturday, May 5.Details will be in the May/June issue of the newsletter dueout in late April.

Cat in the Hat’s 50th Birthday ExhibitAlso celebrating a 50th birthday this year is Dr. Seuss’ muchbeloved Cat in the Hat. The Children’s Department will befeaturing a display of Cat in the Hat memorabilia in the Dis-play case in the Children’s Room during the month of June.
