Dear Sennett Families,

I hope all of you had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving break and were able to spend time

with friends and family. It was great to see so many of you at parent/teacher conferences and

we look forward to increased partnerships as we continue to improve our family engagement

practices. We understand that you, the Sennett families are an integral part of student success

and we look forward to working with you as we strive to achieve our common goal.

I am happy to report our staff and students continue to work hard as we move Sennett’s

students towards college and career readiness. Sennett continues to make progress in

monitoring and making adjustments to our instructional practice as outlined in our School

Improvement Plan (SIP). Please keep us informed on the individual needs of your student as we

focus on increasing the academic achievement of all our students.

Once again, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the volunteers from the Parent Action

Team for their amazing work coordinating the fundraiser effort again this year and for their

role in making the Green & Gold Party a tremendous success.

It is hard to believe that in a few short weeks we will be bringing 2014 to a close and

celebrating the start of 2015! The beginning of a new year is a wonderful time to reflect on all

of life’s blessings. Thank you all.

Happy Holidays,

LA FOLLETTE HIGH SCHOOL

STUDENT SCHEDULING DEMONSTRATION NIGHT

Wednesday, January 21, 2015

6:00-8:00 PM

SAVE THE DATE!!!

Scheduling Demonstration Night is a valuable opportunity for incoming 9th

grade students and

parents/guardians to learn about scheduling, review course offerings, discover the benefits of parent/student

portal, become familiar with graduation requirements, gather information for 4 year educational planning, and

inquire about post-high school plans. Counselors, representatives of all high school departments, and

administrators will be available to assist with this important process.

The Concert Season Is Upon Us

December 11th

marks the first concert of the year for Sennett Middle School. We all

look forward to listening to our students perform our selections, and we want to relay some

tips about concert etiquette to all who will be attending:

* If necessary, exit the auditorium during group switches or during courteous applause

at the end of each song.

* To dignify the performance, we ask that you not call out individual names while the

students are on stage, but wait until after the performance to tell them how great they did.

* Please also turn off telephones and refrain from any unnecessary talking during the

performance.

We look forward to seeing you on Dec. 11th! The concert will begin at 7:00; students

should report to the La Follette Auditorium at 6:30.

Sennett Middle School Endowment Makes Grants Possible

The Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools’ School Endowments provide each school with annual income that is used to fund creative and innovative programs and projects that are not funded within the core school budget. Recently 49 schools were awarded grants totaling $78,290. This year Sennett Middle School had $1,476.00 in endowment income available to use to make grants for imaginative programs and projects that propel student learning which can’t currently be funded through the core school budget. Our grants committee decided to fund the following projects using the available endowment income:

$676 - The field of science is full of specialized content vocabulary as well as academic vocabulary terms such as analyze, compare, process, cycle, and pattern. The Common Core State Standards stress the need to provide direct and explicit instruction for academic vocabulary. Funds will be used to purchase a magnetic whiteboard, or even a corkboard, that would allow words and images to be put up and taken down easily, moved around to show relationships, and used by students to solidify their understanding of terms.

$500 - Funds will be used for the establishment of an after school book club. One way to increase our students’ reading scores is to provide them with access to relevant, high-interest books and the time to read them. Students would select the books to read and funds provided through this grant would be used to purchase the books for the students to keep. Staff would donate their time to run the book club.

$300 - Funds will be used to purchase Read Design Studio Pack computer software that will allow students to create READ bookmarks and posters for display. The goal of this project will be to encourage, promote, and celebrate the reading of complex literary and informational texts. Staff will help their students choose complex literary and informational texts to read independently. After completing the texts, the students will be asked to share and explain the content of the text. They will then pose for their READ poster with a copy of the text. The READ posters will be displayed throughout the LMC and hallways to promote and encourage the reading of complex literary and informational texts.

If you have any questions about the School Endowments, please contact Mary Bartzen at 237-7723 or [email protected]. To donate to our school’s endowment, visit the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools’ website at www.fmps.org.

11th Annual Overture Field Trip! As you are undoubtedly aware, on Friday, October 24th, 700 Sennett staff and students attended our community-building Overture Center field trip. This year we saw an "urban circus" entitled 360 Allstars, which was immensely enjoyed by our students and staff. The performers (break dancers, a freestyle unicyclist, a BMX flatlander, a Roue Cyr artist, a basketball "juggler" and renowned musicians) were all notable world champions and their talents amazed us!

Moreover, you should once again be very proud of the behavior and appropriate theatrical responses your students exhibited at this production. Although our school body filled 2/3 of the theater, it was evident that your children were especially aware of their roles in the audience.

In addition, we would like to thank the Sennett families who contributed additional money to this event. Due to their generosity, all of our students were given the opportunity to attend!
