Concrete structures are a great deal more than sand, gravel, cement and water stirred up and left to harden into usefully shaped lumps. Considerable care and knowledge are required to produce quality concrete. We propose a complete range of testing equipment to satisfy practically all the EN and other National Standards.

EN = European Standard (Mandatory)BS = British StandardASTM = USA StandardNF = French StandardDIN = German StandardUNE = Spanish StandardNLT = Spanish “Norma de Laboratorio Transporte”UNI = Italian StandardCNR = Italian Road StandardISO = International Organization for Standardization

The new EN standards, which have been produced by the CEN/TC 104 are grouped in two main subjects:

EN 12350-1 to 12350-7 Testing Fresh Concrete

EN 12390-1 to 12390-11 Testing Hardened Concrete

In the majority of cases the new EN standards corre-spond to some previous National Standards and, apart for some exceptions there should be almost no difference in the specification of test apparatus. Considering that in many countri-es outside Europe the National

Standards such as BS and NF will still be adopted, we continue to propose the relevant apparatus as well as the ASTM and AASHTO testing equipment. For more infor-mation the following table indica-tes the correspondent or compara-ble standards to the new EN.

maChine Class (en 12390-4, astm e74)

All our EN digital machines and Automatic Testing Systems are supplied in Class 1 starting from the 10% of the full range as standard but with a special calibration procedure identified by the code 50-C0050/CAL we can grant the Class 1 starting from

1% of the full range. This exceptional per-formance enables the machines to be used for a considerable number of applications including:- Early strength concrete - Lightweight concrete

- Small size specimens - Soil-cement mixtures- Lean cement mixtures- Flexural and splitting tests using

accessories etc.

Performances of Semiautomatic and Automatic models (briefly)

M semiautomatic models In these models, the load rate application is provided by the self compesatedd flow control valve (Pacemeter system), which maintain the preset load rate all over the test requiring just occasional operator intervention on the valve dial knob. Both digital data acquisition system (Wizard Basic and Digimax 3) permit the verifica-tion in real time ofthe load rate on the display. The following pages fully describe all models.

M automatic modelsThe Automatic models (Automax 5 system), satisfy all the above requirements and also feature:Fully automatic test cycle with closed loop digital feedback. It is sufficient to press the START button to complete the test including:

Automatic rapid piston approach and zeroing.Load rate automatic control, failure detec-tion and unloading. The Automax 5 can control a second and third frame to perform, for example, the flexural and the compression test on cement sample too.

M automatic test systemsThey are based on the high performance control consoles featuring programmable test cycles including the determination of the Elastic Modulus and to perform automatically tests under control of Load/Stress, Displacement and Strain Rate. The consoles can control up to four diffe-rent frames: e.g. compression on concrete, flexure on concrete beams, compression and flexure on cement specimens. The following pages fully describe all machines and systems to satisfy any other question.

Switching on the display the sequence is the following:

1 From Main Menu select TEST RUN.

2 Select test type (e.g. Compression).

3 Introduce specimen description.

3.1 Select specimen shape.

3.2 Introduce the specimen data.

To perform another test on the same specimen size it is sufficient, when in position 4.2 or 5.1, to press button F3.

q STANDARDEN 772-1, 12390-4

All EN semiautomatic and automatic com-pression machines can be factory fitted with upper and bottom block platens 310x510x50 mm instead of the 300 mm dia. (or 300x300 mm) platens. This confi-guration, also tested for stability confor-ming to EN 12390-4, is suitable for testing either blocks, or concrete cubes up to 200 mm (300 mm with 50-C6632 model), or cylinders up to 160x320 mm (250x500 mm with 50-C6632 model), using the suitable distance pieces see page 232.The following codes and description with the code of the selected compression machine, should be specified at time of order.

Power pump option for a second frame

All machine pumps fitted with Digimax 3 data acquisition and processing unit, can be upgraded with a two-way valve for the non simultaneous control of second frame (example flexural or special compression frame) which have to be completed with a suitable pressure trasducer whose signal in acquired and processed using a Digimax 3 channel. For this interesting and econo-mical solution ask for the valve described below.

q STANDARDEN ISO 7500-1; EN 12390-5,

1338, 1339, 1340; ASTM C78, C293

General description

This new frame has been designed for testing in flexure, using the suitable acces-sory, various building materials. The “C” shaped open structure allows an easy and practical front loading but, once the specimen is in testing position, the structure is closed by a vertical rod hydrau-lically controlled which grant high rigidity to the system.Due to this important feature and to the capacity of 300 kN, this frame is ideal either for conventional flexural tests or for more sophisticated determinations as deforma-bility tests and ductility index. Fitted with high precision strain gage load cell. The frame can be connected to one of the following consoles:

IntroductionThe following compression testing frames are proposed for connection to control consoles to form an Automatic testing system. They are supplied complete with basement, pressure transducer and connecting hose. Models 50-C6600/FR and 50-C7600/FR can also test 250x500 mm cylinders and 300 mm cubes. All models can be upgraded for block testing. See page 225.While all the above EN models 2000 to 5000 kN cap. feature a solid four column welded structure, a version of the 3000 kN frame feature a four prestressed column structure and two different load measuring system: pressure transducer (50-C5800/FR) and load cell incorporated in the piston for more accuracy (50-C5902/FR).

Safety features

The load frames are fitted with:- Ram travel switch which prevents the excessive piston travel- Front and rear transparent fragment guard- Optional: locking switch to cut off mains when the door is open. See accessories 50-C0050/P, page 229.

General description

Four column, high stiffness welded frames. Compression platens are made from alloy steel of minimum hardness of 550 HV 30. Traceable certificate of surface hardness is available on order (See 50-C0050/HRD4 on page 225). The flatness tolerance is 0.03 mm and the roughness value (Ra) in the range of 0.4 μm. The spherical seat, in lubricating oil enclosure, allows initial free alignment when the initial contact with the specimen is made and automatically locks in this position up to the termination of the compression test as required by the specification.

These high stiffness frames are particu-larly suitable for research purposes. The two versions are identical except for the load cell incorporated in the piston of the 50-C5902/FR version providing very high accuracy starting from the very beginning of load scale.

Balanced pre-tensioning system

The columns consist of two elements, one contained within the other. The internal part is the column and works in tension, whilst the external part is a tube and works in compression. This configuration guarantees tensional

uniformity at all load levels. The other specifications concerning compression platens, spherical seat and safety featu-res are identical to those of the EN Four coloumn welded structures.

Verification of the force transfer of a compression tester by the strain gauged column 82-E0105/1, digital tester 82-P0804/E, PC, printer and 82-E0804/SOF software ( see page 449 )

The conformity of compression testers to the en 12390-4 requirements in terms of stability (force transfer) is mainly due to the frame design, spherical seat and com-pression platens. All our frames are fully conform to these stringent requirements which requires the verification of the self-alignment of machine components and the restraint on movement of the upper platen using a special strain gauged column (e.g. our model 82-E0105/1) connected to a suitable data acquisition and processing system (e.g. our model 82-P0804/E).Unsatisfactory premature sample failure is caused by an incorrect load application. The resultant compression resistance can be significantly lower than the true resistance.

Schematic view of the special spherical seat which assures an homogeneous distri-bution of load over the area of the speci-men complying with the EN requirements for force transfer.

Introduction

CONTROLS with over 40 years experience within the field of materials testing, wor-king alongside customers in industry and research establishment, has resulted in the most comprehensive range of testing systems, software and test accessories cur-rently available. The constant innovation and modern design applied to our testing systems, in coopera-tion with State Universities, has resulted in the development of the ADVANTEST 9 Servohydraulic testing unit.

M 50-C9842

ADVANTEST 9. Servohydraulic testing unit for compression, flexure, splitting tests.230 V, 50 Hz, 1 ph.

General description

The unit consists of:- Hydraulic power system- Microprocessor control unit- User interface with large graphic display

and keyboard, PC and printer- Interactive software for PC.The ADVANTEST 9 can control up to 4 hydraulic testing frames, of various dimen-sions and capacities, to perform tests under controlled speed of:- Load/stress (e.g. MPa/s; kN/s; etc.)- Displacement (e.g. m/s; μm/s)- Strain (e.g. strain/s).The feedback is automatically performed with P.I.D. closed loop control. The system controls the displacement of the hydraulic piston as a function of the load or stress or strain by a suitable tran-sducer. The displacement transducer is placed by the user where needed to mea-sure for example the deflection of a beam under flexure load. The strain transducers are typically fixed on the specimen for direct reading.

Main applications

The performances of the ADVANTEST 9, besides to the conventional applications where the test ends with the failure of the specimen are related to the more advanced applications as the determination of the: - Concrete post peak residual strength - Concrete fracture toughness, from the

complete Hardening + Softening Load vs. Strain diagram

- Determination of the Elastic modu-lus.

The increasing use of new materials in the construction industry has created an incre-asing demand for new and more complex and sophisticated tests often related to the Deformability and Ductility behaviour. The Ductility is a fundamental design para-meter, which is related to the seismic risks, micro-fissure due to shrinkage, the fatigue behaviour, the resistance to shocks.

To perform automatically test under control of:LOAD/STRESS, DISPLACEMENT. AND STRAIN RATE

Concrete workabilimeter. 230 V, 50 Hz, 1 ph.

General description and specifications

Used to verify the homogeneity of concrete in relation to its workability or plasticity. This test method has particular applica-tions for concretes containing chemical admixtures. The apparatus consists of a metal box divided into two parts and fitted with an electrical vibrator system. During operation the concrete is poured into the first section of the box and then the dividing plate is removed. The vibrator is immediately switched on and the time is recorded when the concrete has spread uniformly across the whole box.

Vebé consistometer. 230 V, 50 Hz, 1 ph.

This test method is a variation of the simple slump test and subjects the concrete to vibration after removal from the slump cone. The time taken for the concrete to be recompacted is taken as a measure of wor-kability. The small vibrating table operates at a fixed amplitude and frequency, and in the test a plastic disc is placed into contact with the upper surface of the concrete. The test is completed when the lower surface of the disc has been completely coated with cement grout.

B Overall dimensions: 700x260x380 mm (hxwxd)

A Weight approx.: 90 kg

This test method is used to determine the penetration of a hemis-pherical metal weight into freshly

mixed concrete, which is related to the workability of the concrete. The apparatus consists of a cylinder with one end having a hemispherical shape and the other end fitted with a graduated handle. The weight assembly is lowered through a frame into the concrete and the penetration mea-sured.

A Weight approx.: 15 kg

This device is used to deter-mine the wor-kability and degree of com-paction of fresh concrete after being placed in the forms.

It can be used for in-situ measurements or inside test moulds and forms. Results can be correlated against the slump test. The operation is very simple, insert the tester into the concrete up to the level of the disc, after 60 seconds, a measuring rod is lowered onto the surface of the concrete and the K-slump is read directly on a scale. The calibrated hollow tube has a diameter of 20 mm.

q STANDARDNT Build 427 (Scandinavian NORDTEST method)

Introduction

Since 1985 the gyratory compactor has been used for concrete materials in Finland and Scandinavia. The method is used for mix design and quality control mainly in concrete product plants, where low wor-kable and zero slump concrete is used (for such products as hollow-core slabs, tubes and paving blocks). The method is used for: mix design simulating selected production processes specimen preparation for streng-th tests (fresh and cured) research of mix related phenomena (workability, curing time, admixtures etc.).

The 100 mm dia. mould allows use of a mix with max. 16 mm aggregate size. The compaction principle is similar to that for asphalt materials, see page 403.

We propose two versions, with pneumati-cally operated vertical pressure:

M 54-C0237/R

Cementometer R, microwave meter for rapid determination of Water/Cement ratio in fresh concrete. For regular water cement ranges (0.35-0.7)

General Description

By utilizing the latest microwave and microprocessor technologies this appara-tus can determine the water content of freshly mixed concrete and mortar. The meter uses a two prong sensor that, when inserted into the material, measures its complex dielectric constant. As the die-lectric constant of water is four to eight times greater than most aggregates and cements, changes in water content directly effect the sensor output that is conver-ted by the integrated microprocessor into water/cement ratio by calibration curves pre-set in the meter for standard cement type I, II and III. It can also be programmed with up to 10 mix design by the user. The meters can store over 150 readings with the time and date for future referen-ce. Data can be recalled via RS 232 interfa-ce to a PC running WIN95/WINNT.

q STANDARDEN 12390-8, ISO 7031

Introduction

The method concerns the determination of the depth of penetration of water under pressure. The test is performed by clam-ping a concrete prism 200x200x120 mm or 150 cm cube between two flanges with special circular gaskets. The water, under controlled pressure is then applied to the surface of the concrete specimen. The penetration of water is measured after the testing period by breaking the specimen or taking the readings through the graduated glass burettes. Two models available: three place (code 55-C0244/A) and six place (code 55-C0244/B) version. Both of them can be fitted with burettes for the quantitative determination of water penetration (codes 55-C0244/AV and 55-C0244/BV).The systems can test concrete specimens up to 200 mm side or dia. and 300 mm high. Supplied complete with gaskets for 150 mm cube specimens. The apparatus have to be fitted with a suitable air compressor, maximum working pressure 10 bar. (See accessories).

q STANDARDConforms to DafStb for steel fibres reinforced concrete, supplement to DIN 1045-2,

Measuring Principle

The 55-C0242 consists of a magnetization body named “sensor” which shall be posi-tioned around the sample containing steel fibres. The fibres are activated by their magnetic (ferroelectric) properties without sample destruction. The total activation rate depends on the fibres content and orientation (x, y and z directions).Measurement is fast and accurate and it is possible with both fresh and hardened concrete.Accuracy and repeatability are obtained by internal calibration curves specific for each typical commercial steel fibres. New steel fibres types can be calibrated on-request and will be afterwards integrated in the easy to handle software.

Introduction

The development and improvement of in-situ test techniques better known as non-destructive test methods (NDT) are the result of the need to investigate: - The progressive ageing of con-

crete structures- The effect of chemical attacks on

concrete often due to air pollu-tion or to the use of chlorides in winter to prevent icing

- The quality and integrity of new structures

- The problems associated with historical buildings.

This catalogue includes a vast selec-tion of NDT instruments and appa-ratus with precise indications con-cerning the product use and the relative applications. Controls is also prepared to supply pre-sales advice in order to identify the appropriate apparatus and all suggestions concerning their correct use. The various problems that relate to the durability of concrete are assuming ever increasing impor-tance due to their close relationship to the quality of the structure as a whole. The main problems associated with the durability of concrete are nor-mally caused by the poor quality of the concrete itself. Knowledge of the degrading processes and the availability of materials and

methods to overcome these proces-ses permit concrete to be designed both resistant and durable. The term durability is an abstract term, in fact it would be more practical to say the useful life of the structure. This parameter should be included in the initial design of the structure: the designer must take into considera-tion the requested life cycle (in which period the structure should maintain its designed criteria).

A complete range of instruments is available to measure the durability of concrete to answer most of the requisites of the operators in the Construction Industry. Controls can also make available considerable specific know-how and first hand experience to help in the analysis of test results.

General description and specifications

Corrosion of steel is an electrochemical process involving anodic (corroding) and cathodic (passive) areas of the metal. By measuring concrete - surface electrical potentials relative to a standard reference electrode on a predetermined grid, the presence and location of corrosion and its probable future performance may be asses-sed. It is possible, by regular measurements, to monitor the behaviour of new and rela-tively new structures and thus minimise maintenance costs.

q STANDARDBS 1881:204

IntroductionA covermeter is a gauge that measures the thickness of concrete cover over steel reinforcement bars and metal pipes. The covermeter can tell you the depth of the concrete, the location and orientation of reinforcement bar (rebar) or metal pipe and can even determine the diameter of the rebar.A drill making contact with a rebar or tendon duct can not only destroy the drill bit, but can also cause serious structural damage. The BARTRACKER covermeter is able to accurately determine where the metal is, even when there are complicated crossings of mesh support structures and can locate tendon ducts deep within the structure. This takes the guesswork out of rebar and pipe location. The basic unit, which is also available with battery charger for 220 V, 60 Hz, and 110 V, 60 Hz, can be completed with a number of optional probes for various determination. See accessories.Furthermore the unit can be supplied with a traceable calibration certificate (one for each type of probe), which must be reque-sted at the time of order.

Digital resistivity 2 probe array meter test set

General description and specifications

For assessing the possible rate of corrosion in reinforcing bars. The time at which corrosion of steel may commence and the rate at which it may proceed is dependent upon properties of the cement paste and the permeability of the concrete. Since the electrical conductivity of concrete is an electrolytic process, which takes place by ionic movement in the aqueous pore solu-tion of the cement matrix, it follows that a highly permeable concrete will have a high conductivity and low electrical resistance. Thus knowledge of the electrical resistance of a concrete can provide a measure of the possible rate of corrosion of steel embed-ded in it.

M 58-e0035/B Resonance frequency meter General description

The operating principle of this apparatus is based upon the determination of the fun-damental resonant frequency of vibration of a specimen generated by an impact and sensed by an accelerometer.Three different modes of vibration can be applied: Longitudinal, Transverse (Flexural) and Torsional. From these the following material characteristics can be calculated:Young’s Modulus of ElasticityModulus of RigidityPoisson’s RatioThe apparatus, which include the battery operated instrument, the test bench, the accelerometer and impactors, has an auto-matic feature that computes the maximum amplitude, which eliminates cumbersome frequency scanning. Frequencies are auto-matically shown in the display and a cursor allows the user to move along the frequen-cy spectrum. Also the time domain signal and the frequency spectrum can be stored and uploaded to a PC for further analysis and inclusion in reports. The determination of flexural resonan-ce is very important to determine the Durability of Concrete by studying the degradation of concrete under accelerated freezing and thaving cycles and aggressive environments on concrete specimens.

Standard pullout test apparatus 100 kN cap.

General description and specifications

For the determination of the pullout strength of hardened concrete in test spe-cimens or structures by measuring the force required to pull an embedded metal insert and the attached concrete fragment from a concrete mass. The apparatus comprises a hydraulic jack 100 kN cap., a precision measuring Bourdon gauge 150 mm. dia., bearing ring and 10 pullout inserts, all contained in a carrying case.

B Case dimension: 740x300x255 mm

A Weight approx.: 21 kg

q STANDARDASTM C803 General description and specifications

The operative principle of the apparatus is that a spring drives a steel pin into the surface of the material. Since the depth of penetration is inversely proportional to compressive strength, the device provides a fast and safe way of determining the in situ strength of material. The spring is loaded by tightening the retraction nut until the trigger mechanism latch closes to hold the spring in place. With the spring loaded it is compressed to a distance of 20 mm. Thus once the trigger is pulled there is enough force to test compressive strength of con-crete or mortar to a maximum of 37 MPa.After the pin has penetrated the surface, clean the hole with the provided blower, measure depth penetration with the pro-vided micrometer and compare to the pre-viously prepared chart for the compressive strength of your material. Charts for typical mortar and concrete is provided.

A proven technique for the non-destruc-tive evaluation of concrete and masonry strength taking 28 mm dia cores.Numerous studies and experiments carried out by University researchers confirm the importance and reliability of this system particularly when used in conjunction with other non-destructive testing apparatus such as the ultrasonic tester and the con-crete hammer. The development has been carried out on a 28 mm dia. core sample, which due to its small size does not affect the integrity of the structure thus permit-ting easy restoration of the cored surface. More detailed information is supplied with the Microcore apparatus concerning the interpretation of results. This technique can also be used for assessing the carbona-tion depth (with the appropriate reagents) and for masonry products to verify their physical condition or to evaluate the com-pressive strength related to the direction of sampling.

Core preparation and compression

The flatness of core ends is essential to obtain reliable compression results so it is very important to make sure that the tolerance is within 0.01 mm.Furthermore the compression test should be performed with a suitable compres-sion machine considering that the max. required load should be lower than 50 kN. Concrete quality and homogeneity evaluation

To estimate homogeneity and structural integrity the most appropriate methods are those that utilise ultrasonics. The main aim is to measure the transit time of sonic/ultrasonic pulses through concrete. The pulse velocity is dependant upon the density and the elasticity

properties of the material. By com-paring pulse velocities it is possible to evaluate homogeneity and iden-tify the presence of cracks, voids, honeycombing, anomalies and non-homogeneity of elastic properties. To gather more information concer-ning the material under study, diffe-

rent test methods can be combined, particularly ultrasonic readings with rebound hammer readings so as to obtain additional information con-cerning concrete strength

for pileS and foundationS Introduction

The cross-hole ultrasonic test method is used to check the continuity of deep foundations, diaphragm walls or stay pla-tes by detecting cracks or faults along the shaft and the tip. The homogeneity and quality of concrete are measured and defects are located accurately, even at the top of a pile. Sonic logging is a continuous measurement of sound velocity along the pile between an emitting sensor and a receiving sensor lowered down two or more tubes held together with reinforcements. The tubes are inserted before the concrete is poured and must reach the base of the pile.

In-situ evaluation of stress, structural inspection, structural monitoring

In addition to the previous more com-mon methods used in non-destructive testing the following range of instruments can mea-sure geometric or physical parameters such as displacement and deformation. The complexity of the instrument or system selected can be varied according to the level of sophistication required. This may cover the measurement of a single parameter such as crack width, up to a multiple structural moni-toring system.

The in-situ stress, deformability and resi-stance features of masonry can be deter-mined by the flat jack method. The test is performed by making a cut to a uniform depth into the mortar courses and inser-ting the flat jack or couple of jacks, which are pressurised to the desired level.

The tests can be performed using the fol-lowing apparatus:

Flat jacks:No. 1 flat jacks (for stress determination)

Introduction

The in-situ stress-deformability and resi-stance features, can be measured by using the standard mechanical strain gauges (see our model 58-C0230), and a pressure gauge or, in alternative, by a more sophisti-cated data acquisition system consisting of electronic extensometers (e.g. model 58-D0585), pressure transducers to be con-nected to the hand pump and a data logger (e.g. our Datalog 82-P0908/A).
