1900: FUMBLING IN THE DARK 1

This first of six target stylesgives us the false impressionthat styles appear in a logicalway.

But there was no plan and itwas unclear to artists in 1900what to do next after Realismhad ended the CT and changedeverything.

    1. did Realism have a future ?

    2. what was the alternative ?

    1900:

FUMBLING 2 It was a confused situation

because many saw Realism asmere photography

Instead, they wanted a deeperrealism of inner or subjectivevision - feelings, dreams, thespiritual - this seemed far morereal.

    These artists experimented with

ways to represent what wecant see; and Matisse, in 1905,alerted the public to this change

It is out of this confusion andsearching that Picasso andCubism comes.

    CUBISM in 5

    1. Cubism, the first modern art style, begins with Picasso and Braqueworking as a team: 1906 to 1914

    2. Picasso, the prodigy, uses andfuses together past and recent art

    3. Cubism keeps evolving intodifferent versions and methods

    4. For many, Cubisms shifting andconfusing style reflects recent

changes in science + technology5. Its genesis is in Picassos painting

    of Les Demoiselles in 1906-07

CUBISM: STARTING MODERN ARTPicassos Cubism continues Impressionisms search for a true or

realistic picture of the world but in a very different way.

Its methods and discoveries push the boundaries of art so far that itinfluences all of the century, in two main currents it seems.

    LES DEMOISSELLES DAVIGNON

This unfinished experimentinitiates the team and thestyle of Cubism 1906 - 7

It draws on African,Egyptian, cartoons and otherart styles to show that realitycan be captured in a waybetter than a photograph

    Its multiple viewpoints, with

no traditional perspective, comes from the earlierexperiments of PaulCezanne (who Braque wascrazy about)

    PUZZLE PICTURES

Cubism altered so many artrules and recycled together somany art styles that we find ithard at first to read these flat

picture puzzles: can you seewhat is going on here (1908) ?

These puzzles resolve whenyou realize how everything issimplified and that differentviewpoints are collectedtogether simultaneously to showmore than a photograph could.

But once free from the past,Cubism keeps changing

    PUZZLE 2: Vollarde

By 1910 it was a case ofbreak up / analyze / reform

This mid-phase image is aflat mosaic of geometricforms, broken planes, slanting edges, little colourand shallow space

The lighting suggests a reliefand allows us to pick out

clues, so that its meaning isconceptual (it points to whatwe know and doesnt showwhat we see)

    PUZZLES 3:

By 1912 they had addedclues to help us solve thesepuzzles - broken lettering, puns, jokes, shorthand

    signs, symbols and realworld materials

Now it was like a newsecret code or language -no longer perceptual - wehave to decode it

Mind you, could we be sureabout what wed deduced, and should we know aboutthis ?

    PUZZLES 4: Guitar

Before the war stopped it,Cubism even abandonedpaint and began collage

This simplified and clarifiedthe shapes and meanings, and it introduced colour

Collages materials had realworld associations and thismeant that it contained even

more suggestions This was yet another

technique to inspire laterartists and designers

    CONFUSION AND POPULARITY

African, Cezannesque, Analytic, Hermetic and Synthetic- theseare the names often given to these stages of Cubism 1906 - 14

Such theories and classifications like these built up around this

style because Picassos Gang didnt explain it This difficult and unexplained style was not much promoted and

yet it became well known outside Paris to become much copiedaround Europe. Picasso noted: my style has a life of its own

Was it because it reflected the cultural upheaval of this

period or the disturbed times just before the war ? In fact, knowledge of Cubism was transmitted rapidly around the

world by the Futurist artists from Italy

    SNAPSHOT OF FUTURISM

The Italian Futurists were amuch more organized group

Lead by Marinetti, they mademanifestos, events, andperformances in all medias

Inspired by Italian politicsinitially (1909) they quicklywent international, borrowedheavily from Cubism (1911)

and used a roadshow to grabheadlines around the world

Heres a survey of theirinternational impact

Wide-Ranging ActivitiesThe Futurists were more than painters. They attracted designers, writers,

photographers, architects and more and so the range of their work was immense

    THE AIMS OF FUTURISM

It was the ambitious goals of Futurism thatattracted such a wide range of practitioners

Futurism placed the new technologies andspeed at the centre of all art and design

They proposed that this would encourage apolitical and cultural revolution that wouldtransform society and leave the past behind

    FUTURISM +

CUBISM At first Futurism was quite

    timid in its visual language

    But when Severini brought

back news of Cubism fromParis in 1911 they thenimmediately expanded theirrange to include its effects

This hybrid or mix of styles isoften called CuboFuturism toshow its mixed nature

    GOING

FURTHER This hybrid or mix is what was

seen by the public and, unlikePicassos original, it mademodern art (then, and today)

    topicalmultimedia

    publicity conscious

This was where the Futuristroadshow came in: it

introduced Cubism to a largeraudience and expanded itsrange and attraction intodesign and media

THE ROADSHOWmodern art goes multimedia and publicity aware

Marinetti was a showmanand he took his group as acabaret to all the maincapital cities to promote hismovement. It was wild.

(We will look at clips of thislater in the course)

They gained the necessarynewspaper headlines byoffending, insulting and

shocking their audiences They used costumes, sets,

noise machines, posters, sound poetry and stunts tocreate a multimedia storm

    The Albert Hall

At the Albert Hall (1912) theEnglish press got its firstview of these goings on

    Within months English art

students like Nevinson weresetting up an EnglishCubofuturist movement:Vorticism

    This pattern was repeated in

Germany, France andRussia - so within a fewyears Picasso experimentshad been expanded andexported to create modernart all over Europe (next)

    VARIETY

Not all the Futurists followedthe CuboFuturist route andthe variety of their styleswithin Futurists is impressive

(see next) X-rays, blurring , heat

effects, pointillism andphotography were all used

This search for a new visual

language before WW1echoes those of writers, filmmakers and composers asculture reflects tumultuoustimes.for example ?

    DESIGN AND MEDIA CROSSOVER

The Cubofuturists workdemonstrated to designers, photographers and mediapeople just how well the new

approaches to art could beapplied to most areas ofvisual culture

It set a pattern: Modernismsimpact will not only be in art

Unsurprisingly, therefore, once the war finished (1918)a whole new design styleemerged that was influencedby Cubofuturism - Art Deco
