Five Tipsfor finding
useful resources for your business
Do you ever put off doing things in your business because you really don’t like doing them?
Because there is no one else to do them
You know they have to be doneYou know you have to do them…
But you’re just not surehow to go about it
Do you ever feel like you have to be 5 people all at once to get everything done that needs doing in your business
Well that’s probably because you DO have to be all those people
In a small business you have to fill multiple roles
The problem is you’ve probably never been trained to perform multiple roles
If you are like most business owners you will have training and skills relating to the core technical activities of your business
But you’ve probably had little or no real help in how to build a business or how to be a successful entrepreneur
Now here a really key point
Building a business…
and
Doing business…
Are two very different skill sets
Having great technical skills is not enough to make you succeed in business
You also need business building skills
If you are going to succeed as a business owner you cannot afford to get stuck in the operational side of your
business
To succeed you must acquire a broader range of skills
Success demands that you become a fully rounded business person who can bring all these functions
together
This means you must develop your skills over time
But how should you go about it?
What should you look for?
There are three primary places you can look to get
these broader skills
1.Consultants whosell high qualityservices
But this can often be just too expensive for small business owners
2. Governmentfunded skillsdevelopment
Here you can often get a significant subsidy which makes development more affordable
2. Governmentfunded skillsdevelopment
But unfortunately many of these programs are not that relevant to small business
Savvy business owners are using the wired world of the 21st century to get the winning edge
3. Online, self help services
The Challenge for the time poor business ownerhowever is where to quickly find the information you need, right when you need it.
So here are the criteria that I personally use to sort the good from the bad
1. Affordable
Development takes time and therefore you need to look at the value you’re receiving and the cost you’re
paying over time
2. Flexible
As a small business owner you must be able to fit your skills upgrade into your busy schedule
3. Practical
As a small business owner you need help that is ‘hands on’ more than theory
Look for tips and help about the ‘here and now’ in your business which can be implemented and make a noticeable difference quickly
4. Targeted
Generalised information is far less helpful than practical help on the topic you want.
For this reason you need to be able to choose from a list of topics rather than a fixed format you can’t change
5. Quick and Easy
As a business owner you want information which you can get to and use without lots of explanation.
Look for use of graphics, pictures or other visual aids which help you absorb information and relate to the topics discussed
Summary of tips:
1. Affordable
2. Flexible
3. Practical
4. Targeted
5. Quick and Easy
