OCWA manages 820 water treatment facilities—more than any other Canadian operator

We’re the biggestOCWA operates and maintains 820 water and wastewater treatment facilities—more than any other operator in Canada. Our facilities treat 1.9 billion litres of water every day. That’s 320 million cubic metres of drinking water and 360 million cubic metres of wastewater every year.1

1Drop for dropEach day, 4.5 million people drink OCWA-treated water. That’s more than 25% of the people in Canada’s most populous province. Drop for drop, OCWA water is refreshing, safe, and always on tap when Ontarians need it.

The choice for Ontario municipalities OCWA is proud to be the choice for 75% of Ontario municipalities that outsource water and wastewater treatment. And because of our unique structure, clients receive a level of safety and quality unmatched by any other operator.

OCWA is across Ontario With five regional offices and 19 hubs, OCWA’s unique structure enables us to efficiently serve 180 clients in Ontario’s diverse regions—from densely populated urban centres to far northern reaches. When needed, we quickly deploy OCWA’s expert teams across an area that’s twice the size of Texas.

The biggest—and getting bigger OCWA’s client retention attests to our continued excellence and value. We retained 95% of contracts up for renewal in 2012 while gaining two large new contracts. And we’re poised for more growth in the years to come, as partners worldwide turn to OCWA for expertise in water and wastewater treatment.

2We’re the innovation leader OCWA constantly seeks safe and cost-effective new water treatment technologies—and whenever we find a new solution, we share it across the province, so all our clients benefit.

Tastier tap water In Killaloe, by replacing chlorine with stabilized Huwa-San hydrogen peroxide, a new product from SanEcoTec, we achieved an immediate, dramatic improvement in water quality. This first use of Huwa-San in North America helped Killaloe avoid costly infrastructure upgrades.

OCWA found 35% in energy savings for Orangeville—and then shared the idea

INNOVATIVE 2Faster reactions, less sludgeAt the St. Marys Wastewater Treatment Plant, we tested and adopted a new catalyst from Bio-Organic Catalyst Canada that improved reaction speed and reduced biomass sludge by 56%, significantly reducing removal and disposal costs.

Bacteria breathe easierTo replace old energy-hungry blowers at the City of Stratford’s Sewage Treatment Plant, we searched the world before selecting quiet, energy efficient turbo blowers from Quebec-based APG-Neuros. We also installed oxygen-sensing blower controls, so the blowers run on demand instead of 24/7. Now we’re using this technology to stretch wastewater capacity and cut energy costs at several Ontario facilities.

Technology matchmaking OCWA’s Annual Technology Showcase is essential to the way we innovate. This premiere event for showcasing new water technology in Ontario lets new and established companies pitch their products and services to OCWA and other potential clients—just as SanEcoTec and APG-Neuros did.

More than waterWorking with partners, OCWA provides energy audits and project management to upgrade process systems, ensuring OCWA clients save energy and benefit from available incentives.

3We’re more than Ontario We’re always seeking ways to bring our expertise to projects across Canada and around the world. OCWA stands among the very best international water operations and maintenance providers. We apply Ontario’s high compliance standards to every project we undertake— both at home and further afield.

OCWA consults on water engineering and operations challenges worldwide

MORE THAN ONTARIO 3Canada’s best water professionals Every two years, over 40 international teams compete in rescue drills, laboratory tests, and sewer pipe repair at the WEFTEC Operations Challenge. The OCWA Jets consistently lead all Canadian teams in this competition. In 2012, the Jets ranked higher than ever internationally.

Networked supportOur unique hub structure enables us to manage distributed facilities. New projects outside Ontario are treated as network extensions, combining the speed and responsiveness of local management with ready access to OCWA’s deep expertise.

International partnerOCWA’s strategic partnership with Mekorot, Israel’s national water company, enables us to share best practices for engineering and operations, mutually improving our business processes. Together, we have consulted on projects in India and the Caribbean and continue to explore international opportunities.

Emergency response everywhere OCWA’s Emergency Response Teams (OERT) are ready to provide Ontario communities with emergency equipment and highly-trained staff within hours if disaster strikes. On the ground, OERT operators—including electricians, millwrights, chemists, and process specialists—lose no time in restoring clean, safe drinking water. OERT is now partnering with global transportation services to deliver OCWA’s emergency response capabilities across the world.

TRUSTED 4Safety first, alwaysSafety is OCWA’s top priority—for our employees and the clients we serve. Our employees get over 44,000 hours of training a year. We integrate safety into all our business systems and update all safety protocols annually. At OCWA, there’s no job bigger than safety.

Trusted to respond and protectWhen fire, power outage, or severe weather strikes, OCWA coordinates quickly with local responders to restore and protect water and wastewater treatment services. We arrived in three hours to protect water and wastewater services during Minden’s 2013 floods. Our Portable Treatment Facility continues wastewater treatment while we repair and maintain small plants. OCWA provides water services disaster relief to all Ontario First Nations communities, most recently to the facilities in Foleyet, Matachewan First Nation, Constance Lake First Nation, Shawanaga and Pikangikum First Nation.

Trusted during non-stop improvementsPeel Region has trusted OCWA to manage its water facilities with no interruptions and no compliance issues through 10 years of uninterrupted upgrades. Today Peel hosts global delegations eager to see the latest in water infrastructure systems and technology. We’re proud Peel has relied on OCWA through this ambitious expansion, which will continue for several more years.

5We invest in communities Beyond providing clean water, OCWA makes valuable contributions to Ontario and beyond through education, awareness, and support. We take great pride in sharing OCWA’s water knowledge and resources.

Tap water, safe waterOCWA has partnered with Blue W, a community-based program that promotes the benefits of drinking tap water and using reusable water bottles. After all, tap water is free, easily accessible, and environmentally friendly. We are working in Leamington, Kingsville and Essex and are planning to expand to more communities in 2014.

OCWA works hard to preserve groundwater both at home and abroad

INVESTS IN COMMUNITIES 5Prescription for Clean WaterDown the drain is no place for prescriptions. OCWA has partnered with the Clean Water Foundation in our Prescription for Clean Water program, raising awareness of proper prescription drug disposal. It can be as simple as returning them to the pharmacy. OCWA is expanding this program across Ontario in 2014.

Youth awareness programs OCWA employees participate in children’s water festivals, lead tours of our facilities, and help students learn how their habits impact water treatment systems. We are building teaching tools with educators that will reach Ontario’s young people and promote interesting water industry careers.

Beyond OntarioIn 2012, OCWA began supporting GlobalMedic, a Canadian charity that deploys professional Canadian engineers, firefighters, police officers, and paramedics around the world for disaster relief. Our support focuses on providing clean drinking water solutions to people in crisis. OCWA employees raise funds to support GlobalMedic’s international missions, and volunteer their time to make Rainfresh water purification units—simple bucket filtration systems that can supply a family of seven with clean drinking water for a year.

Now that you know us, let’s tackle your water infrastructure needs together.
