4.2. - Teaching Philosophy and Goals

My teaching philosophy for An Effective Learning Environment in teaching soil sciences is represented via the courses that I have designed, my teaching style, research-partnership with the undergraduates (e.g. FURAP), and professional development activities:

i. I Facilitate Problem Based Learning (PBL) courses. My PBL courses provide good

opportunities for students to: (i) practice metacognitive abilities and foster their critical thinking; (ii) develop their “hands-on” laboratory and fieldwork skills; and (iii) engage students with a taste of “real” scientific research experience.

ii. I Understand and Inspire Students. As I am teaching different level courses in my department (i.e. 2000, 3000, and 4000 level), this allows me to continuously interact with both junior and senior students. Due to the interactive and research nature of my courses I am having a good opportunity to (i) recognize individual student’s interests, abilities, strengths and weaknesses; (ii) realize that students do not all learn in the same manner or at the same rate; (iii) promote group-work ethics and provide an enjoyable learning experience that fits different students, and (iv) follow up student’s progression with time.

iii. I Promote Multidisciplinary and Public Outreach Mindset Among the Undergraduates. I (i) offer two departmental required courses with multidisciplinary/holistic nature and/or outreach activities: Hydropedology (SWAE 4111) and Soil and Water Tour (SWAE 4410); (ii) facilitate and mentor students in sharing their knowledge and learning experience about soils with the local and international community through conducting training workshops to school pupils and

teachers, in presenting at conferences and other social-community based events, in publishing in local magazines and newspapers, in making documentary movies and books, in posting information via social media such as Facebook, Short Message Services (SMS) and YouTube, and in conducting interviews in national TV broadcasts.

iv. I Continuously Revise My Pedagogical Techniques. I share, exchange, and improve my teaching techniques by: (i) attending and presenting in the pedagogical sessions of high class international conferences; (ii) self-assessment of the course curricula in preparation for degree program accreditation; (iii) accommodating the critics made by the external reviewers; (iv) considering the comments/feedback made by the students via the course evaluation or by their personal communication; and (v) by attending professional development sessions.

(i) Major revision and created new course outline for this major required course; (ii) Prepared PPT files for the course (used by visiting instructor/consultant because currently I, as ADUS, am not teaching the course); (iii) Introduced journal review session and in class discussion of published research papers; and (iv) Added topics relevant to degradation and aspects of management of soil and water resources in Oman; introduced a full section on soils and chemical pollution and principles of biochemical remediation technique.

(i) Major revision and updated the outline and the laboratory manual for this major required course; (ii) Introduced a novel and inquiry-based research oriented laboratory curriculum that integrates the “skill learning”, “research experience”, and “effective writing skills”; (iii) Added a component of application of soil microbes in the environment (i.e. environmental soil microbiology); (iv) Adopted a new and more appropriate text book for the course; and (v) handed all of my teaching materials (PPT files, course outline, exams, etc.) and shared my experience in teaching this course with a newly recruited soil microbiologist.

• Have advised more than 200 undergraduate students during my tenure as an Assistant Professor. • Based on the advisors statistics (academic year 2007/2008) provided by Dr. Saud Al-Jufaily (the

former ADUS) I had the highest advisee list of 71 students in CAMS (College mean = 17; 60 members).

• As due to the current position as the ADUS, I am the “unseen” advisor for almost all students in the college.
