Let me begin by stating that there is no perfect way to play the game of basketball. There are an infinite number of strategies and offenses of which your team can run, and they all have unique merits of their own that provide successful results. The 5-out “no mistake motion” system is not the perfect way to play, but it is a very effective option. The 5-out “no mistake motion” system provides the structure of a continuity, a variety of actions like the princeton, and the flexibility and spacing of a free-lancing motion. All of these systems have flaws and challenges of their own, but the 5-out “no mistake motion” system takes the best concepts of all the systems and blends them into 1.

CONTINUITY OFFENSE:

NEGATIVE

Patterned actions are easy to scout and disrupt

POSITIVE

Patterned actions provide clarity and security for the players

PRINCETON OFFENSE:

NEGATIVE

Multiple actions and reads make it hard to learn and execute

POSITIVE

Multiple actions and reads make it hard to scout and disrupt

FREELANCE MOTION OFFENSE:

NEGATIVE

Lack of structure can cause confusion and inhibit execution/efficiency

POSITIVE

Freedom and read/react ability can give the defense fits

DRIBBLE DRIVE OFFENSE:

NEGATIVE

One dimensional attack that requires proper personnel

POSITIVE

Fantastic spacing and the ability to exploit bad defensive matchups

Again, I stress that the 5-out “no mistake motion” system is not a perfect system, but it does offer the benefits of multiple other offensive schemes along with the following:

● Simple system for any level ● Impossible to mess up

● Flexible for changing personnel ● Fully customizable & adaptable

HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS: RULE #1: Fill the spots The 5-out “no mistake motion” system starts with spacing. As you can see from the diagram below, there are 5 spots that are to be filled at all times. It does not matter which players are positioned on certain spots, as all positions are interchangeable. Additionally, players do not have to be on these spots exactly, but they must be in the general vicinity of these spots, and always be behind the three-point line. If a player is not sure what to do, they just need to fill a spot. No mistakes can be made as long as the spots are filled.

RULE #2: Know the numbers There are 7 main actions that comprise the 5-out “no mistake motion” system. The 7 actions all have a number (1-7) that will be called prior to the play starting. The actions are:

1 - Basket Cut 3 - Down Screen Back Cut 5 - Flare Screen & Slip 7 - Flare Screen Curl Cut

2 - Down Screen Curl Cut 4 - Down Screen Slip 6 - Ball Screen

Here is how the players know what action to execute:

1. Coach (or player) calls the action number 2. The called action is run repeatedly until a shot is taken 3. As the players are executing the action, they continue to fill the spots

Additionally, the coach can call a combination of numbers as well to give the defense multiple looks. Here is how the players know what action to execute:

1. Coach (or player) calls the action number (i.e. “23”) 2. The first action is run 2 times. For the call “23”, there would be two down screen curl

cuts actions that occur. 3. Once the first action occurs twice, the second action is run until the possession ends.

For the 23 call this would be down screen back cuts until the possession ends. 4. As the players are executing the actions, they continue to fill the spots

RULE #3: The passer starts the action In order to know which players are responsible for executing the called actions, and which are responsible for spacing the floor, there are two simple rules to follow:

1. The passer is always involved 2. The player in the spot beside the passer is involved 3. All actions involving a down screen = the passer is the screener 4. All actions involving a flare screen = the passer is the cutter

RULE #4: Finish all cuts The offense will only be effective if you are able to maintain proper spacing throughout the possesion. Finishing cuts is a great way to maintain spacing. On every cut, the cutter must enter the charge arc on the ball side. In order to finish the cut, the cutter must then relocate themselves to the open corner outside the three-point line. RULE #5: If you are begging for the ball, you need to back cut The offense will not be effective if you are not in attack mode. Anytime a player is denied a pass, they must back door. This will trigger a fill action to the spot that is now open, giving the passer another entry.

POINT

WING WING

CORNER CORNER 5 Ou t Spacing Spots:

All 5 positions are interchangeable, and i t does not matter who startswhere. I f a breakdown occurs in the offense, the player who is confusedcan just f i l l a spot and everything is back t o normal. Hence the name "NoMistake Motion".

Note: These spots are general areas for where players need t o be. Thereare no special spots on the court. I f a player is a litt le higher o r lower onone spot, that is ok. The main idea is that players cannot be t o o close t oone another, and they cannot be t o o f a r away f r o m one another.

NO MAN'S LAND

5 Ou t Spacing Spots:

We want all o f the area inside the three-point line t o be open and availablet o attack with dynamic cuts and dribble penetration. Additionally, we wantt o create long closeouts for defenders who do collapse inside the paintwhen they cheat t o guard the ball o r one o f the 7 actions.

Reasons t o enter no man's land:

- Driving the basketball- Executing one o f the 7 actions- Going after a 50 /50 ball

I f you are not doing one o f the aforementioned 3, space the floor!

4 5Fi l l ing The Spots

When a spot on the floor is vacated, the closest player without the ball wil lf i l l i t . Here you can see the point player basket cut, so the wing rotates upt o f i l l the point, and the corner rotates up t o f i l l the wing. The player whocut t o the r im would then f i l l the open corner.

The only way t o make a mistake in this offense is t o not be in one o f the 5spots.

4 5Act ion Numbers: "1"

"1" is a basket cut that is t o be executed by the passer. I t is imperative thatthe passer set up their cut with an aggressive step and plant opposite o fwhere they are cutting.

Additionally, the player must finish their cut t o the r im and then out t o thecorner.

Every action in this offense has a cut going t o the r im (shown in blue) anda cut going away from the r im (shown in red).

4 5Act ion Numbers: "2"

A "2" is a down screen action by the passer followed accompanied by a curlcut f rom the player who is receiving the screen. The cutter wil l take theircut all the way t o the rim, and then screener wil l pop back t o where theystarted from in order t o be the second cutter.

Because the spot i n front o f 4 is now vacated, 4 wil l l i f t , giving 2 a space t ocut out t o after their cut t o the rim.

A "3" is a down screen action by the passer followed accompanied by aback cut f rom the player who is receiving the screen. The cutter wil l taketheir cut all the way t o the rim, and then screener wil l pop back t o wherethey started from in order t o be the second cutter.

Because the spot i n front o f 4 is now vacated, 4 wil l l i f t , giving 2 a space t ocut out t o after their cut t o the rim.

4 5Act ion Numbers: "4"

A "4" is a down screen action by the passer that wil l be slipped t o the rim.The screener wil l take their cut all the way t o the rim, and then cutterattack the top o f the key.

Because the spot i n front o f 4 is now vacated, 4 wil l l i f t , giving 1 a space t ocut out t o after their cut t o the rim.

This a great call t o combat teams that are switching screens.

4 5Act ion Numbers: "5"

A "5" is a flare screen action between the passer (who wil l be receiving thescreen) and the closest player who did not catch the ball (who wil l besetting the screen). The screener (2) wil l always do a "4" after the screen. 3(player who received the pass from 1) wil l take a dribble o r two t o shortentheir pass t o the flare action, as well as set them up t o receive the nextflare.

As 3 dribbles, 5 would f i l l up because the spot i f empty. This creates acorner for 2 t o get out t o after making their second cut.

Act ion Numbers: "6"

A "6" is a ball screen action that is t o be executed by the 4 o r the 5 (youcan designate who you want t o be setting ball screens in your offense).Players who receive the ball bu t are not ball screeners wil l pass and cutjust like the 1 call, and then when the ball finds the hands o f 5 o r 4, theywil l chase their pass with a ball screen.

On any ball screen that gets set, the action should freeze on the side thatthe ball is being dribbled towards. The side behind the ball would rotate asalways.

Here you can see that 5 has caught the ball and passed t o 2. Now 5 sprintst o chase their pass with a ball screen and roll. Pick and rolls wil l now occurat random within your offense at different spots, giving you lots o foptions.

4 5Act ion Numbers: "7"

A "7" is a curl cut action of f a flare screen action between the passer (whowil l be receiving the screen) and the closest player who did not catch theball (who wil l be setting the screen). The player receiving the screen (1) wil lcurl behind the flare all the way t o the rim. The screener (2) wil l always doa pop back after the screen. 3 (player who received the pass from 1) wil ltake a dribble o r two t o shorten their pass t o the 7 action, as well as setthem up t o receive the next 7 .

As 3 dribbles, 5 would f i l l up because the spot i f empty. This creates acorner for 1 t o get out t o after making their cut.

4 5Combining Numbers:

You can call any combination o f the action numbers as well. When calling acombination o f numbers, the first number is run twice, and then the finalnumber is run for the rest o f the possession. We wil l use the example o f"1 2" here t o illustrate the idea.

Here you see the first "1" being executed after player 1 passed t o player 3.
