Introduction

Photonics is an interdisciplinary field of science and technology combining the achievements of optics, electronics and computer science and dealing with the technologies, components and systems utilising electromagnetic radiation, ranging from gamma, UV and VIS rays to the far infrared and THz wave frequencies. Photon-ics is essential to the development of modern economy and the proper functioning of the socially important sectors, such as: science, ed-ucation, communication, safety and medicine. The European Union has acknowledged the importance of photonics by making it one of the 7 key technologies and one of the top research priorities under the Horizon 2010 programme. At the same time, the UN announced that the year 2015 would be known as ‘the International Year of Light and Light–based Technologies’. In Poland, the study ‘Forsight technologiczny przemysłu polskiego do 2030 roku’ (‘Techno-logical foresight of the Polish industry until 2030’) (InSight 2030) indicated that photonics is considered a technology with the greatest development potential and the one set to receive considerable support.

The Polish Technological Platform on Photonics was established to meet social needs arising from

a common desire of the Polish businesses and scientists to cooperate in the field of photonics.

Scientific Technological Consortium under the name of Polish Technological Platform on Pho-tonics was established on 27th February 2013 pur-suant to the initiative described in the Council of the European Communities documentation of the 2003 about forming the technological platforms (‘Investing in research: an action plan for Europe’ of the 04th April 2003 and ‘A European Initiative for Growth. Investing in networks and knowledge for Growth and Jobs’, of the 21st November 2003).

PPTF is an open membership institution and new members may join it at any time. PPTF members may include organizational units involved in scientific or business activity or government, self–government or non–government organiza-tions related to photonics or declaring operation in favor of development of photonics in Poland.

The main objective of PPTF activities is to pro-vide conditions favorable to the development of Polish photonics with the aim of increasing sales of innovative photonic products manufactured in Poland, including in particular the increase in their exports.

RESEARCH AREASINTERNET OF THE THINGSInternet of Things involves a huge number of communicating devices deployed in our envi-ronment as well as in objects surrounding us. Terms related to IoT such as: Smart Planet, WSN (wireless sensor nets), Swarm, TSensors (trillion sensors), Internet of Everything, M2M (machine to machine), Smart Dust, etc. give the idea of the global and ubiquitous dimension of IoT. Its eco-nomical aspect is also hard to be overestimated since none of the former High Tech revolutions has reached the volume of trillion–unit market. This novel enormous dimension and diversity of IoT sets many new technical challenges, and among them: very low–power sensors and bio–sensors, MEMS / NEMS sensors, energy har-vesting from ambient environment as well as its storage, small signal rectification, extremely low–power information acquisition and processing, ultimate low–power wireless communication, but also new materials and packaging technologies, network algorithms and energy efficient coding, information security, system solutions, IEEE standards compatibility, etc. According to IoT concept, objects may directly or indirectly collect, process or exchange data through a network of communicating sensors. CEZAMAT will develop wireless sensor networks (WSN) including mate-rials, technologies and components necessary for their construction.
