1. Varanasi
Varanasi situated on the banks of the River Ganges, Varanasi is sacred to Hindus, Buddhists and Jains and also one of the oldest
continuously inhabited cities in the world. In many ways Varanasi epitomizes the very best and worst aspects of India, and it can be a
little overwhelming. The scene of pilgrims doing their devotions in the River Ganges at sunrise set against the backdrop of the
centuries old temples is probably one of the most impressive sights in the world.
2. Haridwar
Haridwar, the name literally translates to the Gateway (Dwar) to Lord Vishnu (Hari)! In other words, it can be said that Haridwar is
the place from where you can gain access to the Lord. Situated at the foot of the Himalayas, the holy city is said to have entertained
the Hindu Trinity, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, in the epic times. Adding to its sanctity is the fact that it is from Haridwar that the
holy Ganges enters the plains, giving it the name of ‘Ganga-Dwara’ (Gateway of Ganga).
3. Rishikesh
Rishikesh, the very name conjures up images of resonating bells, holy dips, soaring hills and gushing river Ganges in the mind of an
individual. Situated on the banks of the holy Ganga River, the town is regarded as the Gateway to the Char Dhams (four major Hindu
pilgrimages) - Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. It is believed to be the place where meditation can help one attain
Moksha (salvation).
4. Amritsar
Golden temple is located in Amritsar. The temple is a Gurdwara that is visited by thousands of Sikhs as well as people of other faiths,
each and every day. The Sikh holy books, AdiGranth and Guru Granth Sahib have been placed inside the Gurdwara by its founder,
Guru Arjan. Although this isthe holy ground for Sikhs all over the globe, the reason for its fame is the existence of four doors to
symbolize Sikh tolerance towards followers of all religions.
5. Bodhgaya
Bodhgaya is the most important Buddhist pilgrimage place in the world. Located in the state of Bihar, it’s here that Lord Buddha
became enlightened during intense meditation under a Bodhi tree. The exact spot is now marked by the sprawling Mahabodhi Temple
complex. The town is also home to dozens of Buddhist monasteries. Those who are interested will find plenty of meditation and
