WHAT IS CYSTIC FIBROSIS?
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetic disease affectingCanadian children and young adults. There is no cure.
Cystic fibrosis causes a build-up of thick mucus in the lungs leading tosevere respiratory problems. Similarly, mucus and protein build-up inthe digestive track results in extreme difficulty in the digesting andabsorbing adequate nutrients from food.
The effects of cystic fibrosis are most devastating in the lungs.Ultimately, most CF deaths are due to lung disease. More than 4,000Canadian children, adolescents, and adults with cystic fibrosis receivespecialized care at one of the 42 CF clinics across the country.
Together with Kin Canada, we will make cystic fibrosis history.
Then and NowIn 1960, most children with cystic fibrosis
did not live long enough to attend
kindergarten. Today, because of the
support of Kin members and other
generous donors, Canadians with cystic
fibrosis have one of the highest survival
rates in the world.
