WHAT IS CYSTIC FIBROSIS?

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetic disease affectingCanadian children and young adults. There is no cure.

Cystic fibrosis causes a build-up of thick mucus in the lungs leading tosevere respiratory problems. Similarly, mucus and protein build-up inthe digestive track results in extreme difficulty in the digesting andabsorbing adequate nutrients from food.

The effects of cystic fibrosis are most devastating in the lungs.Ultimately, most CF deaths are due to lung disease. More than 4,000Canadian children, adolescents, and adults with cystic fibrosis receivespecialized care at one of the 42 CF clinics across the country.

Together with Kin Canada, we will make cystic fibrosis history.

Page 9: 5 Annual Barrie - storage.googleapis.com€¦ · More Than $1 Billion Raised Since our founding in 1920, Kin Canada clubs have donated more than $1 billion to Canadian causes, communities

Then and NowIn 1960, most children with cystic fibrosis

did not live long enough to attend

kindergarten. Today, because of the

support of Kin members and other

generous donors, Canadians with cystic

fibrosis have one of the highest survival

rates in the world.

Kin Canada and CFKin Canada is the nation’s largest all-Canadian service organization.

Founded in 1920, its members are active community volunteers.

Kinsmen, Kinette and Kin clubs across Canada support Cystic Fibrosis

Canada and fund other local projects. The clubs offer their members

opportunities to change lives by making a difference in the lives of

others.

In 2014, Kin Canada celebrated 50 years in the fight against cystic

fibrosis. Since 1944, Kinsmen and Kinettes have raised more than $43

million in support of the work of Cystic Fibrosis Canada. These

dedicated volunteers raise funds through a variety of activities including

golf tournaments, lotteries, galas, telethons, bake sales, and road-toll

events.

Kin members are dedicated to making cystic fibrosis history by

participating in various Cystic Fibrosis Canada national fundraisers.
