"I was involved in leading a group of stakeholders from various sectors in Long-Term Care to create a reporting system/database for 'catastrophic events.' Many meetings were wasted bickering and even name-calling between participants until I decided to take a different approach: I dumped a stack of sheets on the table and read aloud the worst of the worst preventable catastrophes that resulted in death. After some attendees were moved to tears, or had to leave, I asked "have I shared enough? This is what we're here to improve. Let's set aside our partisan differences and see to the task at hand." From then on, everyone was much more collaborative - the difference was like night and day." - Chris Currie, Project Manager

Interpretation and Anecdotes
“I was called to consult on a project to build a tunnel for a 1 billion dollar hydro project. A contractor was selected to provide a proposal and I was asked to validate their design. Using a technique we refer to as "value engineering" I made a recommendation based on the properties of the soil to change the grading and therefore the length of the tunnel. I was able to influence the orientation of some stakeholders from negative to positive by making recommendations to the design that represented cost savings of 140 million dollars.” – Boro Lukajic

Conclusion
• Regardless of industry, experience and project manager credentials, stakeholder management is considered a very important and continuous process throughout the project life cycle.
• Stakeholder management tools in conjunction with strong leadership and collaboration improves stakeholder orientations and outcomes.

Project Team - Lessons Learned
• Each interviewee was a stakeholder in the project. They were all highly influential to the success of the project and we saw the importance of being mindful and respectful of their time and their input.
• An important factor to the success of the project was the use of available technologies such as Skype which allowed us to conduct interviews with individuals who were not able to meet in person. Also, an online survey tool was used to collect the data and was further utilized to analyze the data and prepare the graphs for this presentation.
• Working in a team with rotating responsibilities gave us the opportunity to experience a collaborative approach to project management. We gave each team member the opportunity to wear the Project Manager hat and we saw the advantages and disadvantages of different leadership styles.

Project Team - Lessons Learned
• Working on this project as a team gave us an opportunity to know each other a little better. We engaged in a team building exercise and we were able to find some common interests. We are considering starting a beer club at the end of this course.
