Album: Tales Of A GrassWidow Street Date: May 28, 2013 May 28th, 2013, American duo CocoRosie aka sisters Sierra and Bianca Casady will release their first album in three years, ‘Tales Of A GrassWidow’. This is their fifth studio album, and marks their first self-release title after having previously been on SubPop and Touch & Go Records. Produced in collaboration with Icelandic composer and producer Valgeir Sigurðsson and enriched by a whole host of guest performances, it’s a brave record, synthesizing electronic and organic sound to convey a futuristic, back-to-nature feeling. The sisters boldly tackle topics most wouldn’t dare including child abuse, drawing parallels between the treatment of children, especially girls as disposable and the destruction of the earth’s resources. CocoRosie sing eye-opening accounts of unsayable things, yet their music ultimately celebrates a spiritual freedom attainable in the purely natural world.Their songs blend a myriad of styles and references, from hip-hop and reggae through to folk and opera, shaping the most painful of experiences into memorable and evocative pop songs. Taken as a whole, CocoRosie’s music is an ongoing psychologically intimate dialogue between the siblings. Each sister has her own persona and vocal delivery; Bianca delivers hard-hitting truths in a childlike voice whilst Sierra responds in pure open tones, playing a range of instruments including the harp, flute, piano, and guitar. Amongst the 11 tracks that weave together to create Tales of a GrassWidow is ‘Gravediggress,’ whose recent release to the web saw CocoRosie warmly welcomed back by fans and critics alike. It’s a foreboding track, representative of the album’s overarching theme, the tale of an imagined conversation between an abandoned child and an outcast old woman. The young girl asks the Gravediggress to bury her love in the ground for safekeeping. With a wistful pump organ introduction, Bianca imparts the entreating child’s words, and Sierra, in haltering, but clear tones sings for the old woman. Their voices blend and overlap, suggesting the woman and child are the same person. Simple piano chords accompany their vocals, with chimes and a marching drum rhythm composed of beat box from CocoRosie’s longtime collaborator, Tez. Friend and sometime collaborator Antony Hegarty, evoking the voice of Mother Nature, sings on the record’s second track, “Tears for Animals” and the album closer, “Poison.” “Child Bride” - awakens the image of grass blowing outside the window soothing a five-year-old girl given away by her family; In “After the Afterlife” the narrator recalls details from the physical world now out of reach; wet snails, moth wings and ashes from a day lit fire. ‘Roots Of My Hair’ describes a solitary child happy with the company of a sparrow. In their ten years as CocoRosie, the sisters have released four albums: Grey Oceans (2010), The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn (2007), Noah’s Ark (2005), and their first album “La maison de mon rêve” (2004) – each one inspiring controversy and debate in equal amounts to praise, such is their fearlessness and willingness to take risks with their art. This strong creative vision runs through every aspect of their work - from videos to live performance utilizing theatrical costumes and make up which they create alongside each new body of songs. HIGHLIGHTS:

• Publicity to be handled by Ashley Ayers of Requiem Media • Bullet Magazine will feature the duo in their April FUTURE issue • Music videos for two singles, After the Afterlife and Tears for Animals • Features in Lifestyle, Fashion and Music journals • Extensive World Tour from May until December

"Up to this point, Mount Kimbie have crafted intimate house party soundtracks or

provided the score for a long bus ride home - but the first single from their forthcoming album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth is Mount Kimbie nudging their way

toward the dancefloor, interested in filling space as much clearing room for it. Slathered in static and pulled forward by a military-esque beat ... snapping into

focus and adding soft bass thuds, echo-laden synth squiggles, and plaintive chords that stretch out in all directions. By the time the vocal comes in, you're hooked."

– Pitchfork ("Best New Track" for 'Made To Stray')

Since 2009, Dominic Maker and his partner in Mount Kimbie, Kai Campos, have played a central role in forging a new form for electronic music. Their influence stretches far beyond the tiny corner of the dance underground that birthed them. They have repeatedly confounded expectations, transforming themselves from bedroom-studio producers to creators of one of the most highly respected, and fully realized electronic album-length statements of recent years. With their sophomore effort, Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, set for release via Warp on May 28th, the perception of Mount Kimbie looks set to expand again. Recorded in their South London studio, the record combines the electronic sensi-bilities of their first album Crooks and Lovers (Hot Flush, 2010), but sees Mount Kimbie moving into a larger space, both physically and sonically. Informed by live shows, including a late 2012 run of N. American dates with new label mate Squarepusher, Kimbie introduced more instruments to broaden their sound, including drums and horns, and have explored more work with vocals, both their own as well as guest vocalist King Krule, who appears on two tracks on the new album.

The duo have undoubtedly grown, they are more experienced, more mature, more self-aware. “Two years is a long time,” says Maker. “Tastes change, what you want out of your life changes, and so on. Naturally, how we want to sound has changed too.” Expanding from the confines of dance music, the resulting album feels looser, richer and more enveloping than the duo’s past work, yet still retains that Mount Kimbie sound.

Tijuana Panthers come striding proudly out of their hometown of Long Beach, California, with Semi-Sweet, their most fully realized album yet. Semi-Sweet has every Panther contributing a part in the entire album-making process, all the way down to brainstorming new songs on drummer and singer Phil Shaheen’s ukelele. Traditional Tijuana Panthers engineer Victor Orlando Nieto split the sessions for Semi-Sweet with new engineer Matt Vasquez, which worked with the new creative process to give the Panthers’ latest a different feel, says guitarist & vocalist Chad Wachtel —something instantly apparent from first jittery notes of the Swell Maps-meets-Urinals DIY clatter-pop opener “Above Your Means.”

From there, it’s a twist-and-turn-y journey through at least four decades of off-center from-the-heart music. “Tony’s Song” matches the relentless energy of the Wipers with instantly catchy beach-punk harmonies, while “Father Figure” left-turns toward the kind of complicated jangle-pop of New Zealand’s Verlaines. “Push Over” is like some kind of Howard DeVoto demo that suddenly splits into a Mickey Baker guitar line, and “Juvy Jeans” is pure my-daddy-was-a-New-York-Doll teen-punk hilarity. (Or maybe the Dead Milkmen? Phil is a longtime fan.) Of course, the surf guitar they built their band on is still surging along—leading the band through their moody “Baby On Board” and then bouncing into the darker-than-it-seems “Forbid-den Fruit.” And then there’s the pitch-perfect Nerves cover, a reverent redo of “One Way Ticket” by a band that in sound and sentiment both were pretty much the Tijuana Panthers of their day. They’re really just aesthetically simple dudes, says bassist and singer Dan Michicoff—they know their songs are done when they not only sound right but feel right, and when they’ve got that same rare combination of harmony and velocity and honesty that’s pushed bands out from their garage since the invention of the electric guitar.

“Cribbing as much from Brian Wilson’s lyrical topics as they take from Dick Dale’s reverb-soaked guitar tone” - NOISEY/VICE

“[The music of the Tijuana Panthers] sounds something like they had spent an afternoon with Jan and Dean sharing fish tacos with Quentin Tarantino, before laying down some 4-track recordings with The Cramps in a sunlit garage.”

One of the clichés about Scandinavian countries is that they are neat and tidy, well ordered, clean. The same could not be said of Copenhagen four-piece When Saints Go Machine’s second full-length album, ‘Infinity Pool’. The opposite, in fact. It’s a record born out of an atmosphere of chaos. It’s harder, darker and more synthetic than its predecessors. It opens with ‘Love And Respect’, which features a guest vocal from Grammy award winning rap artist Killer Mike, who freewheels over chugging, synth-drenched beat. Elsewhere, ‘Dead Boy’ sees Vonsild’s tremulous falsetto digitized and then floated over a semi-ambient soundscape, while ‘Infinity Killer’ pitches skittering sound effects against a low-end drone.

On the previous album, ‘Konkylie’, we tried to make machines simulate nature,” says Vonsild. “With ‘Infinity Pool’ we were trying to capture a feeling of the absurdity of mankind trying to construct nature. Maybe it’s something to do with being in the city. You are always influenced by what’s going on around you.” It’s also to do with the music that inspired them. “There are a lot of references to the early ’90s on the album,” says Vonsild. “It’s not a rave album, but there are a lot of elements of rave on there. ‘Degeneration’ sums up what we were trying to do. There are some tracks on the album that could almost have been rave songs under other circumstances. I think that it’s one of the songs that I don’t think anyone else would have made.”

Rather than go at these rave influences full tilt, they did the opposite of what might be expected: they stripped them down and twisted them into new shapes. The dark undercurrent that coloured the band’s previous releases is intact, then. It’s something that makes the fact that When Saints Go Machine won a string of awards in their native Denmark last year all the more surprising. Vonsild is sanguine about that kind of music industry approval. While it’s nice to be liked, Vonsild says it’s far more important to challenge people as well as yourself. He says they felt nervous about the direction they took on ‘Infinity Pool’, unease that they were operating outside their comfort zone. “But,” he adds, “that’s a good thing. Whenever you feel a bit scared about putting something out, that’s how you should feel as an artist.”

Strut, in conjunction with Ambassador’s Reception and Future Nuggets, presents the first ever retrospective of fabled band Rodion G.A., one of Romania’s best kept musical secrets of the last 30 years. As a band, Rodion G.A. were a unique phenomenon in their homeland at the time, operating in their own universe during a prolific period of recording from 1978 to 1984 at a time of significant political repression under the Ceausescu regime. Bandleader, Rodion Ladislau Rosca, was an enigma. As half-Hungarian, half-Romanian, he lived near the border in Cluj, a city with a healthy music culture which had spawned important prog rock bands incuding Cromatic, Experimental Quintet and Semnal M. Here, Rodion managed to find vinyl, becoming known amongst friends as “King Of Records”. As such, he became equally as steeped in the major Western rock artists of the era – Hendrix, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin – as he was many of the electronic pioneers. He met Kraftwerk during their early days. Despite the political conditions, a music scene existed in Romania, mainly within a network of festivals around the country and in seaside towns at restaurants and clubs. Bands would push the rules, often playing Western covers and venue owners had to becareful, getting to know when inspectors may drop by. Rodion was no exception. He remembers one occasion when an inspector came to listen to a band soundcheck. Despite singing in Romanian, the inspector pulled them up for singing “yeah yeah yeah” during a chorus. From the start, Rodion was concerned with his own style of composition and set himself apart from the predominant rock sounds that dominated Romanian music during the late ‘60s. Technically and in his compositions, he was obsessed with every detail. His first sessions were recorded during 1969-1972 - simple, sparse and haunting pieces using reel to reel recorders, based around vocals, guitars and improvised drums. In 1975-6, Rosca formed Rodion G.A., the ‘G.A.’ comprising band members Gicu Fărcaș and Adrian Căpraru. Rosca had amassed equipment and became a DIY tech wizard, improvising his own techniques of composing using reel to reels. Surrounded by three or four Tesla tape machines, he would record beats and guitar on one channel of the tape, then stop and add other instruments on the other – a raw means of multi-tracking. He would use the other machines to add effects and delays on both instruments and vocals. Other tools in his armoury included an East German Vermona drum machine, a toy Casio VL Tone and a small Russian organ to which he added phaser, flanger and delay pedals. For the band’s gigs, he even made by hand his own rig with ‘Rodion G.A.’-branded speaker boxes and amps. From the start, the band’s sound was incomparable to other contemporaries. Other Romanian musicians like Mircea Florian had moved from a folk-rock background to experiment with more electronic productions but Rodion was different - dense electronic sounds, raw programmed rhythms, intricate arrangements, prog and classical touches. The band’s recorded output in Romania at the time was sparse. There was only one label operating, the State-owned Electrecord, and they recorded two tracks by Rodion G.A. for a compilation, ‘Romanian Rock Vol. 6’. In 1981, the tracks were picked up by radio and Rodion even hit the top of the Romanian charts for several weeks. Beyond this, no other releases surfaced and yet the band recorded prolifically during the early ‘80s. Other records nearly materialised – the band scored the soundtrack to an animated movie, ‘Delta Space Mission’ in the mid-‘80s but the tracks were refused by the film company who then employed prolific Romanian electronic / pop producer Adrian Enescu for the job.The band’s only other documented performance during their career was a show on Romanian television celebrating New Year’s Eve in 1980. Rodion G.A. eventually split in 1987 following a gig at Mangalia Festival and Rodion then walked away from music following the death of his mother. Fast forward to 2012 when the myth of Rodion G.A. came to the attention of excellent Romanian production and DJ crew, Future Nuggets, a collective as dedicated to unearthing Romania’s musical past as they are forging new sounds steeped in the country’s traditions. As well as this album, a partnership with Steve Kotey of Ambassador’s Reception has led to a compilation of their own studio work including their acclaimed psych-jazz album as Steua da Mare. Rodion GA ‘The Lost Tapes’ is released on Strut / Ambassador’s Reception / Future Nuggets on May... remastered from the original tape reels. Rodion G.A. backed by Steua da Mare will be touring fully across Europe from Summer 2013.

DESCRIPTIVE TEXT For anyone remotely familiar with the heavy music underground of the last two decades, Converge needs no introduction. They are recognized as one of the most ferociously consistent, challenging and influential bands within and beyond their realm. Like other long-running institutions Neurosis, Sonic Youth, The Melvins, or Fugazi, Converge was born from the wellspring of punk and hardcore, quickly mutating into something all together different - an aural beast of their own design. Their sound has since fluctuated and evolved over a long and industrious career, but even in their earliest days the hallmarks of their sound were there - whiplash dynamics, floor-stomping breakdowns, brittle heart-rending melodies and a torrential sense of momentum.

The collection of Caring & Killing captures Converge in their formative years, spanning the timeframe of 1991-1994. This period was extremely productive for the band, generating the debut full length, Halo in a Haystack, a slew of compilation appearances and split EPs, as well as multiple demo sessions. The resultant tracks were unpredictable - rageful and delicate, catchy and obtuse. Despite the harsh juxtaposition of opposing elements, it was clear Converge possessed the will and the wit to construct cohesive songs from the maelstrom, ones that proved to be powerfully charismatic in their idiosyncratic nature. These early anthems are certainly more ungainly than those of present day Converge, but they burn with the same vitality and punishing drive for which the band is known and loved. These incendiary sermons are as utterly convincing now as upon the day of their first iteration, and from them a cult was born.

Included is a "decades-in-the-making" collaboration between Charles and his long-time friend and fellow soul veteran, Bettye LaVette. "Yours And Mine" resulted from several recent destiny-laden chance meetings between the two on the festival circuit, where Charles reconnected with Bettye, whose story had in many ways continued to unfold parallel to his. ALTERED HOURS Sweet Jelly Roll

10” available on black vinyl The Altered Hours exist in a swirl of the psychedelic and hypnotic. Sweet Jelly Roll EP, recorded in Autumn 2012 with

Fabien Leseure in Berlin, at Anton Newcombe’s (Brian Jonestown Massacre). Their debut release Downstream was

recorded in a reclaimed government building housing the band’s Cracks in the Light Studio and was released

independently. 2012 has seen The Altered Hours play some wonderful stages and festivals across Europe including

Electric Picnic, Liverpool Psych Fest,Germany and the UK & they have more European dates to be confirmed for a 2013

European Tour.

Hypnotic, driving psych-rock…worth checking out, especially if you’re a fan of late Sixties’ acid trips

Jim Carrol, The Irish Times

A kind of end of the world chant quality … not being short of hooks, the whole thing worked great as pop music too

We Are Noise

They are a fantastic new band from the south, and play wonderful psychedelic rock. Their track ‘Daydream Parade’ is

already one of my favourite new tunes - Swear I’m Not Paul

They’ve got some great tunes that really really stretch out with hypnotic grooves, and your attention shifts from instrument

to instrument, or indeed on to the frontwoman whose vocals anchor their impressive sound - Electric Whipcrack

Excellently woozy, lo-fi psychedelic sounds - Basement Fever

STREET DATE: 5/28/13 Artist: Caspian Title: The Four Trees Track List: Moksha, Some Are White Light, Sea Lawn, Crawlspace, The Dropsonde, Brombie, Our Breath in Winter, The DoveASA, ...Reprise

Originally released on Dopamine Records in 2007, then

later reissued the same year on vinyl by The Mylene

Sheath, and finally re-released in 2010 on CD + digital

formats by The Mylene Sheath, the debut full length by

Caspian sounds just as fresh, sincere and genuine today

as it did six years ago. Emotive instrumental rock that

is essential listening for anyone into “post” anything.

This second vinyl pressing, and first since 2007, features

all new artwork and layout by long-time collaborator

Nate Shumaker for Northern Lights Industries. Since

releasing “The Four Trees” the band has gone on to

release “Tertia” in 2009 (The Mylene Sheath), “Live at

Old South Church” in early 2012 (The Mylene Sheath),

and most recently, “Waking Season” in the fall of 2012

(Triple Crown), all to widespread critical acclaim. After

two years of headlining, sold-out SXSW showcases and

successful US tours with the likes of Minus The Bear,

Cursive, Red Sparowes, Native, and Junius, as well as

several European jaunts, the band appears poised for

world takeover. Indeed it’s high-time to make this

landmark debut full-length available on vinyl once

again, for the first time in half a decade. “The Four

Trees” will finally be reissued on vinyl May 28th via The

Mylene Sheath.

STREET DATE: 5/28/13 Artist: Lavinia Title: Take Shelter Track List:

1. New Blood2. Halo

Following their harrowing 2010 debut EP “There Is Light

Between Us”, Lavinia returns with their follow-up 7”,

“Take Shelter”. Once again featuring Nate Shumaker

(ex-Eksi Ekso, On Fire, The Burning Paris) on guitar

and vocals and Alex Mihm (Eksi Ekso) on drums, this

time Philip Jamieson (Caspian) moves to guitar instead

of bass, and John Helmig (formerly of Everdown,

Crown Vict) plays bass. The two new songs push even

further into the bleak territory explored on the debut,

with a heavier backdrop this time around. The band

starts things out with the beautifully haunting “New

Blood”, as the shimmering guitars gradually ascend

into crunchier, nastier terrain before subsiding to

allow space for Shumaker’s refrained vocal passages,

then culminating in the heaviest sound the band has

ever achieved. Then you’re greeted with the sorrow

of “Halo”, which builds up at a dreamy pace before it

chugs and crushes like a forest of falling and colliding

trees, a driving close-out to the 7”. In addition to his

bass duties, Helmig also recorded and mixed the songs

at Verse Media in Manchester, NH, then they were sent

off to Jason Martin (Starfyler 59) for mastering. “Take

Shelter” will be released worlwide both digitally and on

limited edition vinyl May 28th via The Mylene Sheath.

PRESS: “The five songs that make up ‘There Is Light Between Us’ establish the parameters of a style that should bear promising fruit for years to come... “ — Alternative Press “Lavinia invest their downcast mood music with gauzy Cure-style guitars/vocals (“A Damning Confession”), and make great use of slide guitar and banjo (“Windmills”, “Bone & Arrow”) alongside the genre’s warhorse tremolo and tom drums...” — Decibel Magazine “it’s the manner in which Lavinia offset any naval-gazing tendencies with muscular post rock dynamics that ultimately makes ‘There Is Light Between Us’ such a captivatingly beautiful listen... “ — Rock Sound “Bleak, haunting, delicate, and impossibly massive, There Is Light Between Us is a grand gesture of beauty and solemn depth...” — Decoy Music

Formed in early 2012, Virginia Wings initial desire was to play and record as quickly as possible but they soon realised a more considered approach was necessary if the band was to be at all fulfilling. They made this debut 7 inch with their friend Misha Hering at Holy Mountain Studios. With a knack of making their songs sound like essential forgotten classics, Virginia Wing create thrillingly crafted pop tunes that exist within that time honoured dialogue between the popular and the avant-garde. Their sound veers from the minimalist post punk of Young Marble Giants, to the twisted 60s psych bliss of Arthur Lee and Love and the Radiophonic Workshop TRACKS: RED SAILS/ CREATION

JONO MCCLEERY - 'FIRE IN MY HANDS' 7"

A. Fire In My HandsB. Painted Blue

A1 First Fires feat. Grey ReverendA2 First Fires (Instrumental) B1 Heaven For The Sinner feat. Erykah BaduB2 Heaven For The Sinner (Instrumental)

Jono McCleery's 2011 album, 'There Is' announced him as one of the brightest lights in an emergent crop of artists bringing soul-tinged vocals and beautiful songwriting to electronic music. If he has something in common with Jamie Woon and James Blake, he also truly stands apart. There's his voice for one thing, an utterly convincing, blue-eyed soul delivery worthy of Steve Marriott. Somehow uplifting and introspectively atmospheric all at once, it soars effortlessly over his equally timeless productions. 'There Is' was once described at "Miles Davis, Massive Attack, John Martyn, Fink and Radiohead wrapped up in one exquisitely produced album," and we couldn't have said it better ourselves.

'Fire in my Hands' is his return single, a collaboration with electronic producer Royce Wood Junior. It's a stunning evolution in McCleery's sound; a rapid fire, skittering drum beat and blues piano driving an fathoms-deep vocal. Its musing delivery belies the developing sense of resolve, and the song leaves the listener's mood curiously but profoundly improved.

The package is completed with 'Painted Blue,' a timeless soul number with a swaying, elemental melody and a harmonised chorus that would have the most celebrated soul diva turning green. It's difficult to imagine a more exciting return, the effortlessness of which marks Jono out as one of 2013's best prospects.

April 2013 saw the release of Bonobo's fifth studio album 'The North Borders', already receiving critical acclaim worldwide, as with previous albums 'The North Borders' features a careful balance between vocal tracks and instrumentals and this 12" is the perfect example of this.

NYC folk underdog Grey Reverend appears on the opener 'First Fires,' providing a raw, emotion-laid-bare vocal to the track.

On the flip side Bonobo teams up with the legendary Erykah Badu and the resultant ‘Heaven for the Sinner’ is a triumph, a transcendental, incanted vocal masterclass married to a brilliant two-step glitch and a yearning melody.

And to top off the package we have also thrown in the instrumentals!
