For the second year in arow, Activate Southingtonsponsored its Walk/Bike toSchool Day for Southington’smiddle schools.

Both DePaolo andKennedy middle school stu-dents got to enjoy a crisp,clear May morning as theyhopped on their bikes ormarched their way to schoolgrounds. Children were es-corted by chaperones — pop-ular Connecticut mascotssuch as Rocky the Rock Cat

at DePaolo; or Pucky theWhale at JFK.

Activate Southington is atown-wide program to pro-mote healthy lifestyles thatincorporate exercise andhealthy dieting.

However, some students,like DePaolo eighth-graderDavid Pangbora might notneed as much guidance. “Iride every day,” Pangborasaid. He was one of the firststudents to roll in on a bicy-cle to kick off the morning.About three or four otherstudents rode in on bikes,while the rest walked.

Students had the option towalk or bike from home, ormeet at designated spots towalk with other students andchaperones. DePaolo stu-dents met at Memorial Park,and students of JFK met atthe Plantsville Town Green.

DePaolo eighth-graderAmanda Thompson said shewalks to school on a regularbasis, adding that it helped towake her. “If you lookaround, everyone seems to bemore awake,” she said.

Southington publicschools recently pulled to-gether to initiate a fundrais-er to benefit the ConnecticutFisher House, based in NorthHaven.

The Fisher House Founda-tion exists to build comforthomes for veterans and theirfamilies during a medicalcrisis so they can stay closewhile undergoing treatment.A new Fisher House is sched-uled to be built on the cam-pus of the Veterans Affairs

Healthcare System in WestHaven and funds are beingcollected.

During the week of May14-18, every homeroom in thedistrict was given packagesof Fisher House bracelets tosell for $2 each. Studentswent out and sold (or bought)the bracelets and all the pro-ceeds will go to the FisherHouse. In the one week span,2,000 bracelets were sold,reeling in $4,000.

The bracelets were sup-plied free of charge by theCreed Law Firm, so no mon-ey was needed to even get the

fundraiser going.“The kids were excited to

get their bands and wearthem proudly,” said FlandersElementary School teacher

The Southington Knightsof Columbus was at the top ofits charitable game last Fri-day in bringing 125 people to-gether for a dinner-dance atthe Elks Lodge honoring theyears of dedicated service ofRosemary and Jim Cham-pagne to Southington Relayfor Life.

With a buffet by CarmelaMarie and lively dancing tothe music of “Nick & Nancy,After All,” the crowd dined,rocked and rollicked throughan evening that reached an

emotional peak with movingtributes to the courage andstrength of Rosemary Cham-pagne, who provided those inattendance an inspiringsense of her spirit of faith,

hope and confidence through28 years as a survivor of can-cer.

tion Foundation has electedofficers to its 2012 ExecutiveBoard, with Dawn A. Miceliserving as the organization’schairwoman. On May 12, Arts Happen-ings, a grassroots independ-ent organization, sponsored“Art in the Yard: An OutdoorArt Showing & Sale.” The or-ganization’s mission is to in-spire personal growththrough the arts by providingopportunities for education,exploration, enrichment andexperience.

The event was a unique op-portunity for independentartists throughout the stateand region to showcase andsell their work to the public.This was the first event of itskind in the Southington area,and Arts Happenings’ co-founder Lynn Flaherty isproud of the turnout and re-sults.

“We went into this eventnot knowing what the out-come would be, but we knewthat we put a ton of effort in,and that something positivewould come out of it. We hada pretty good turnout, and all

of the artists were reallyhappy just to be a part of thisevent; and we were so happyto have them on board,” shesaid.

“Art in the Yard” featured20 independent and freelanceartists displaying works invarious media includingacrylic paintings, handmadefiber optic masquerademasks, handmade wire andstone cocktail rings, andhandmade ceramics and pot-tery. Flaherty is thankful forthe word-of-mouth publicitythe event received prior to itskickoff to generate interest.

“We relied on free media

outlets to publicize the event,and it turned out pretty well.We definitely learned a thingor two from throwing thisfirst event, and we are excit-ed and ready to start plan-ning our second ‘Art in theYard’ for the end of this sum-mer. We are striving for it tobe bigger and better, and inthe meantime, we will con-tinue our work to bring thearts to the foreground in thecommunity,” she said.

Hunger is without bound-aries. To the credit of com-munities like Southington,there are agencies which op-erate expressly for the pur-pose of making life more

bearable for those in eco-nomic duress. With the lin-gering woes of a fragile econ-omy, the number of familiesin need has significantly in-creased, thus putting greaterstress on agencies providingrelief to the hungry.

Janet Mellon, director of

Southington CommunityServices, said: “We buy foodfrom Food Share, a greatsource for non-profits feed-ing the hungry. Their verymodest costs allow us tostretch dollars generouslydonated by private individu-als, church and faith congre-gations, businesses and pro-fessional groups as well ascivic and service organiza-tions as well as food dona-tions from those sources.”

With the continuing in-creased demand for food,Mellon and her team of vol-unteers have identified spe-cific food items that arechronically in short supply.

To help balance the supplyand demand, they are mak-ing a focused appeal thismonth for donations of thefollowing staple items in thefamily diet: cereals, tunafish, peanut butter and jelly,macaroni and cheese andpasta products. These itemsare not only in high demandbut their availability fromFood Share and their costlimit the quantities attain-able.

Consequently, there’s amore urgent emphasis thismonth on the call for thesefoods with the hope of“catching up” or closing thegap between supply and de-

mand.“The goal is to enlist the

support of our townspeopleby Memorial Day, Monday,

May 28,” Mellon said, “as wehonor those who’ve made thesupreme sacrifice for ourcountry and those who con-tinue to put their lives on theline every day.”

Being in its second year,Pepe said the day definitelyhas turned into an event.

“Excitement aside thismorning, the kids are enjoy-ing themselves,” he said.“We’re hoping that it spursthem to do this more often.”

At the February PontificalAcademy for Life workshop,The Management of Infertili-ty Today, Luciano, a repro-ductive and endocrine spe-cialist, discussed HormonalCauses of Female Infertility.

goals, we just said roll it out,we’re gonna sell these,”McAloon said. “We want tosupport the Fisher House, wewant to show that Southing-ton’s in on this, so we werehappy to get $4,000.”

Veteran Len Marchesellesaid he was never happier tobe a veteran than to see thekids going out and raisingmoney the way they did.

“Our little children wentout and they bought, or theysold, these little braceletsand they got nothing but a

big thank you and a hug,”Marcheselle said.

Rachel Wache said thefundraiser was a “win-win”for everyone.

“So they can do the job tokeep us [safe] here at home,”she said. “So this is a give-back to them and to theirfamilies.”

The district also recentlyestablished a Veterans Com-mittee to keep the schoolsconnected to veteransaround town. The committeeis divided into five sub-com-

mittees: the Speakers Bu-reau, Living History SkypeProject, Music Partnership,Internal Scan – SPS Employ-ees – Service, and WoundedWarrior – CT Fisher Home.The committees and thebracelet fundraiser are partof a long-term partnershipwith town veterans to pro-mote patriotism and civicpride.

“I’d love to have studentson every one of our commis-sions,” said Superintendentof Schools Joseph V. Erardi.

“And I think the natural tiein is when you talk about re-sponsibility and youth tak-ing responsibility.”

The overall initiative,highlighted as Veterans Day“Throughout the Year,” in-volves a laundry list of activ-ities and classes designed toinstill an appreciation formilitary service men andwomen.

“I want all students to bet-ter understand the freedomswe have every day,” Erardisaid.

Benjamin W. Doerfler, 93,of Southing-ton, diedMay 9, 2012,at HighlandHealth Care.

He wasborn in Meri-den, Nov. 17,1918, he was the son of thelate Frank F. and Martha (Is-bell) Doerfler. He graduatedfrom Lewis High School inSouthington, and Hillyer Col-lege/University of Hartford.He was a Human ResourcesManager at Pratt & WhitneyAircraft in Southington andlater at Allied Control inPlantsville. He served in theU.S. Marine Corps duringWorld War II, aboard the USSVincennes in the Atlantic,then as a drill instructor atParris Island, and Villanova,Pa. for the V12 program. Lat-er in the war, he servedaboard the ET Collins in thePacific. During his retire-ment years he pursued hishobbies, gardening and car-pentry. He remodeled andbuilt furniture for a numberof families/friends in thecommunity.

He is survived by his wifeof 69 years, Shirley AndresDoerfler; his daughter, LynnD. McLaughlin and son-in-law, Thomas; a son, Peter Do-erfler and daughter-in-law,Gail H. Doerfler, of Southing-ton; a brother-in-law, RussellAndres and his wife, Bar-bara; and eight grandchil-dren; 11 great-grandchildren,and several nieces andnephews. He was prede-ceased by his brother, RobertDoerfler Sr. in 2004.

Funeral services were heldMay 12, 2012. Burial with fullmilitary honors followed inSouth End Cemetery,Southington. Memorial dona-tions may be made to a chari-ty of the donor’s choice.

Lamare, 77,of Southing-ton diedp e a c e f u l l ysurroundedby her fami-ly on May 15,2012, at Wa-terbury Hospital. She hadbeen the loving wife of thelate Rene Lamare for 45years.

She was born in SoldierPond, Maine, on Aug. 19,1934, to the late Willie andFlavie (Pelletier) Daigle, shehad been a Southington resi-dent since 1965.

She is survived by threedaughters, Miriam Liskaand husband, Gary, ofCheshire, Gail Stavis and herfiancé, Charlie Lanteigne, ofWakefield, Mass., Debbie

Nesta and husband, Greg, ofWethersfield; daughter-in-law, Carey Smedberg andhusband, Paul, of Cheshire;and eight grandchildren,McKenzie and StephenStavis, Jesse, Amanda andJake Liska, Nick and CarlaNesta, and Melissa Pelletier;two sisters and six brothers,many nieces and nephewsand many loving friends. Shewas predeceased by her son,Mark, four brothers and onesister.

The funeral was held May19, 2012, at the Plantsville Fu-neral Home, Plantsville witha Mass at Mary Our QueenChurch, Plantsville. Burialfollowed in South End Ceme-tery, Southington. Food safety tips for Memorial DayBy Shane LockwoodDirector of Health,

Summertime is a greattime for get-ting togetherwith familyand friendsfor a picnicor barbeque;it also pres-ents idealc o n d i t i o n sfor bacteriaand other pathogens to growand cause foodborne illness.The Centers for Disease Con-trol and Prevention estimatesthat 1 in 6 Americans getssick each year from food-borne illness. With MemorialDay approaching and grillingseason about to begin, thePlainville-Southington Re-gional Health District wouldlike to remind residents ofthese safe food handling prac-

tices that will make your pic-nics and barbeques a suc-cess:

Hands: Persons cookingand handling foods musthave clean hands. Wash yourhands with warm soapy wa-ter, for at least 20 seconds,and then dry your hand witha clean towel before and afterhandling different foods.

Thaw: Thaw foods in a re-frigerator, microwave orduring the cooking process.Never thaw foods by leavingit out on the counter. Harm-ful bacteria can grow in rawmeats, poultry, eggs and fishwhen left out in the tempera-ture “Danger Zone” (between45 degrees and 140 degreesFahrenheit).

Marinate: Always mari-nate foods in the refrigerator.Marinades used previouslyon raw foods should not bere-used on cooked foods. Ad-ditionally, plates, cuttingboards and utensils thatcame in contact with rawmeats or raw meat juicesmust be washed with hotsoapy water before comingin contact with cooked foods.

Temperature: Use a food(thin probe) thermometer tocheck and insure that meatsare thoroughly cooked. Ham-

burgers and pork productsshould be cooked to at least160 degrees Fahrenheit,while poultry and hot dogsmust be cooked to 165 de-grees Fahrenheit. If you arere-heating previouslycooked meats, make sure toheat them up to 165 degreesFahrenheit.

Storage: Keep the hotfoods warm on the grill andthe cold foods chilled on ice.Be sure to have plenty ofcoolers and ice available.Completely separate the rawmeats, poultry and fish fromany ready-to-eat foods, likelettuce, tomatoes, watermel-on and breads. This will pre-vent the harmful organisms,found in the raw meats, fromcontaminating the ready-to-eat foods.

Wash: All fruits and veg-etables should be washed be-fore use.

Avis Merritt Churchill, 97,formerly ofSouthingtonand PresqueIsle, Maine,died peace-fully May 14,2012.

She wasborn Sept. 20, 1914, she wasthe youngest daughter ofWalter and Lottie Merritt, ofPresque Isle, Maine. Shegraduated from high schoolat the age of 15, attended jun-ior college for two years andthen attended Colby Collegegraduating in 1935. While incollege she participated inbasketball, played her violinin the orchestra, attained PhiBetta Kappa academic recog-nition, began her lifelonghobby of writing poetry andlaid the foundation for hercareer as an English litera-

ture teacher. After collegeshe began her teaching ca-reer in Presque Isle, Maine,where she taught Englishand math at the local highschool, earned her Master’sDegree from the Universityof Maine, worked part-timefor the labor board, becamevery active with the USOduring the World War IIyears, and married the loveof her life Amos Churchill in1946. Leaving Maine inthe early 50s to accompanyAmos as he returned to mili-tary service, she subsequent-ly lived in Texas, Germany,and New York City beforesettling in Southington,

where she lived for 50 yearsuntil moving to Richmondin 2006 at the age of 92 to benear her family. She was thehead of the English Depart-ment at Southington HighSchool for more than 20years, a class advisor to sev-eral classes, an avid readerand writer, with several ofher poems published in liter-ary journals, and enjoyed ex-tensive travel with Amos toHawaii, California, Europe,Virginia, and especially en-joyed her trips to MyrtleBeach and her Caribbeancruises. A true New Englan-der, she always met the chal-lenges of life with a quiet re-

solve that was an inspirationto all around her. Her loveof words and the meaningand pleasure and power theyconvey were her greatest joyand her lasting gift to herfamily.

She is survived by her son,Ralph Churchill (Sherry);grandchildren, Tom Jeffrey(Melissa), Ashley Groome(Vince), Laura Williams(Chris), Jared Churchill(Lauren), and Tyler Jeffrey;and great-grandchildren,Jack Jeffrey, Ellie Jeffrey,Cameron Groome, HarryGroome, Sam Williams, EllieWilliams, Conley Williams,and Benjamin Churchill;

and nieces, Linda Bennett,Cathy Lambert, SandraBaldwin; and nephew,Robert Ellis. She was prede-ceased by her brother, RalphMerritt, sister, Ruth Ellis,and husband of 43 years,Amos Churchill.

The funeral was held May19, 2012, at the DellaVecchiaFuneral Home, Southing-ton. Burial followed in OakHill Cemetery. Plainville softball coach Jen Mi-cowski will go into the SouthingtonHall of Fame later this year for herexploits when she was known as JenGombotz.

And Platt softball coach Trish Wo-datch has a Hall of Fame hat trick:Platt High School, Eastern Connecti-cut State and Connecticut Softball.

No question, we have a few areasoftball teams led by coaches who, intheir playing days, were stars. Allfour of the above were All-Statescholastic players who went on tocheckered college careers before be-coming mentors to the next genera-tion.

Which brings to mind the old TedWilliams adage of how great playerscan sometimes make for terriblecoaches. It’s a simple posit: The staris so gifted and so driven that ordi-nary talent or intensity cannot bebrooked or even understood.

And so there is poor connection,

little nurturing. Splendid splintersbegin to fester.

Perhaps if Teddy Ballgame was aschool teacher he’d have done betterwith his Senators. That’s somethingstate senators might want to chew on

while wrangling with Gov. DannelMolloy over education reform.Teaching, after all, is the coachingbedrock for Wodatch, Micowski andthe Hoag sisters. What they do on thesidelines isn’t solely based on what

they once did on the field. It alsorests on what they do in the class-room.

As Kathleen Hoag remarked, “Ithink coaching, by any other word isteaching, and Maureen and I areboth teachers. It’s just another wayof breaking down and teaching a dif-ferent strategy and making sure ifthey don’t have that skill set, youfind another way to teach it to them.”

The Hoags, who led Lyman Hall tothe 1998 Class LL softball champi-onship before going on to SCSU(Maureen) and Notre Dame (Kath-leen), are social studies teachers atCheshire High.

Micowski , an ace Southingtonsoftball pitcher in the mid-90s whowas even better at basketball (that’sthe sport she played at ProvidenceCollege), teaches math at PlainvilleHigh.

Wodatch, a two-time softball All-American at ECSU at two differentpositions in the 1980s, teaches P.E.and health at Platt.

It’s the teacher in them that pro-vides patience while curbing thefrustration of the past player. Be-cause the latter hasn’t gone away: Alittle Teddy Ballgame remains in

The girls tennis team im-proved to 9-4 with a 6-1 victo-ry over New Britain on Se-nior Day.

Earning wins forSouthington was AlejandraGimenez (6-1, 6-3), CarolineRodman (6-4, 6-2) and AlexBarmore (6-4, 6-0) and thedoubles teams of AndreaRasimas and AnnetteKaminski (6-1, 6-3), Jess Top-per and Taylor Grucza (6-2,6-3) and Cassidy Race andSarah Hoder (6-0, 6-0).

Prior to that, the LadyBlue Knights qualified forthe upcoming state tourna-ment with a 4-3 victory overMercy-Middletown.

Powering the locals wasGimenez (6-1, 6-2), CourtneyRace (6-0, 6-3) and Rodman(6-1, 6-0), and the team ofCassidy Race and EmilySheehan (6-1, 3-6, 6-4).

The boys tennis teamhandled New Britain, 6-1, tocreep closer to the .500mark. Southington headedinto this week with a recordof 5-7.

Britain was Matt Downes (6-1, 6-0), Joe Enright (6-1, 6-3),Jon Sadusky (6-1, 6-2) andNate Mullins (7-5, 7-5), andthe doubles teams of KunalKataria and Zaya Oshana (3-6, 6-3, 10-5) and Alex Angelil-lo and Grant Ogrin (6-2, 6-2).

The track and fieldteams swept New Britain.The Southington girls won,101-48. The Blue Knight boyswere victorious, 82-64.

each of them. “It’s always something you

struggle with, especially ifyou’re competitive,” said Mi-cowski . “It’s tough to bringthat out of people from timeto time. You’ve got to work onit every day. It takes repeti-tion; it takes desire to get bet-ter. Sometimes you coachpeople and they peak andplateau, and they’re satisfiedwith what they are. It getsfrustrating sometimes to tryto push them over that humpand challenge them to keepgetting better and not to set-tle.”

Said Hoag DiSorbo, “WhenI first started coaching (in2004) it was difficult only be-cause the intensity and pas-sion I had, I assumed everysoftball player had that, but itwasn’t the same.”

And this from Wodatch,who is in her 14th seasonwith the Panthers after start-ing her coaching career at thecollege level: “Patience? Ohmy god, patience is a virtue,I’ll tell you that.”

Although interviewed sep-arately, the head coachesvoiced similar thoughtsabout how female sports havechanged. In particular:

- With much busier livesand far more distractions,players aren’t as committednowadays. Focus is lacking.

“All I did when I was inschool was play sports; I hadthe time to devote to it,” saidMicowski. “My heart goesout to kids because they’repulled in 20 million differentdirections. A lot of stress on

them these days.”- Out-of-season opportuni-

ties - AAU, travel ball - aremore numerous, yet aren’tnecessarily producing betterplayers. Once the domain ofelite athletes, travel pro-grams are now more the do-main of those who can paythe fee.

“I feel like we’re missingthe fundamentals,” saidHoag DiSorbo. “When I waslittle, I was taught funda-mentals, I was taught thegame ... I’m a head coach and

I’m still teaching high schoolplayers how to slide and thatthey have to tag (up) withless than two outs.”

This drives the old playersnuts. Yet in the next breath,the teacher in them comesforth to say how much theylove their players.

“I have a great time withthese guys,” said Wodatch.“Do I get mad in an inningwhere we make all these mis-takes? Absolutely. Do I wantto pull my hair out and getgray hair? Absolutely, and I

do get them. But at the end,they are still great kids andthey are great role models forthe kids at the younger level.On the field and in the class-room, these kids are greatand I wouldn’t trade ‘em foranything.”

So they coach who they’ve

got, and this is where teach-ing method is far handierthan athletic ability. In thisera of inclusion, it’s the rareclass taught in a uniformway.

In the beginning of the seasonSouthington boys tennis head coachTony Mauro was hoping to finish at8-8, qualify for the tournament, butmore importantly, play a steady sea-son and continue the program on aconsistent trend up. After a three-game losing streak, it looked as ifthings might be a little different thanhe had predicted.

But with three games remainingcoming into this week, the state ofSouthington boys tennis is right

where it needs to be - on the contin-ued slope upwards.

“They’re doing well,” Mauro said.“I guess you’ve got to expect a diphere and there. This season we’repretty close to where I thought we’dbe; though, I thought we’d be more inthe range of .500, but there weresome matches that were close -tiebreaks, etc.”

Mauro was especially pleasedwith a 4-3, super-tight win overNorthwest Catholic on May 7, wherefortunes were reversed and some ofthose tiebreaks went the BlueKnights way.

“I’m quite thrilled with this one,”said a giddy Mauro afterwards.

Now with another season windingdown, the always-passionate Maurolooked broadly at the state of the ten-nis program.

“The first year I had the team,about six years ago, we had one play-er go to Rocky Hill and play indoorsduring the winter. This year, we had13 of them over there. Now that aloneshould indicate a rise in the qualityof play. We have some people in thepipeline, these rookies, doing ex-tremely well,” he said.

Following up, the head coach said

he has those rookies on the varsitycourts this year, just showing thatthe younger classes are getting intothe flow of the program as quick asever.

“The level of interest, definitelybetter,” said Mauro bluntly.

And in terms of positive growth...“I think so. I see that,” he said.Mauro then paused and looked

over at his kids, all along the fencecheering on their teammates. Hesaid that wasn’t the culture when he

“You can’t go into the class-room thinking that one styleof teaching or a lesson plan isgoing to work,” said HoagDiSorbo. “I have studentswho are visual learners; Ihave students with cognitivedisabilities that require ac-commodations to their learn-ing. I do the best I can to scaf-fold a lot of my teaching.”

The term is “modifica-tion,” and it readily trans-lates to the field.

“Not every player reactsthe same way and can becoached the same way,” HoagDiSorbo said. “I learned that

“Definitely they’re moredisciplined and they’re hav-ing fun,” explained Mauro.

“I get a little nervous oncein a while, but I still love‘em,” he finished.

I’ve maturedmore in that aspect,” saidWodatch. “If a kid in myclass is doing poorly, you sit‘em down and talk to themand get them through it, ifthey’re going throughthings. It’s the same on thefield. It’s enjoyable to do.”

“And that’s what my col-lege coach said, ‘We’re goingto win some, we’re going tolose some, but you have tohave fun; you have to enjoyit.’ I still do. I’ll still coach tillI’m done having fun.”
