    Inter-Frequency HandoverCompressed Mode Compressed Mode control is a mechanism whereby certain

    idle periods are created in radio frames during which the UEcan perform measurements on other frequencies.

    If the UE needs to measure the pHot signa l strength of aninter-frequency 3G or 2G ceil and has a single-frequencyreceiver oniy, the UE must use the compressed mode.

    Compressed mode control is a mechanism whereby certain idle periods arecreated in radio frames during which the UE can pe rform measurements onother frequencies. The UE can carry out measurements in the neighboring ceil,such as GSM ceM and FDD ceM on other frequency. if the UE needs to measurethe pilot signal strength of an inter-frequencyWCDMA or GSM ceil and has onefrequency receiver oniy, the UE must use the compressed mode.

    Each physica l frame can provide 3 to 7 timeslots for the inter-frequency or interRAT ceil measurement, which enhances the transmit capability of phy sica lchannels but reduces the volume of data trafflc.

    Inter-RAT Handover TypesBased on the triggering causes of handover, inter-frequencyhandover can be categorized in to four types:o Coverage-based 30 to 2G handoverQoS-based 3G ta 20 handoverLoad-based 3G to 20 handoverSe rvice-based 30 to 20 handover

    Coverage-based 3G to 20 handover:The coverage of the 30 ne twork is incontinuous at the initial stage. Onthe border of the coverage, the poor signa l quality of the 3G networktriggers the 3G-to-2G measurement. If the signai quality of the 2Gnetw ork is good enough and ali the services of the UE are supported bythe 2G network, the coverage-based 30 ta 20 handover is triggered.
