The 4th ITSA (International Tourism Studies Association) Biennial Conference will be held on
the island of Bali in the Republic of Indonesia on August 23-25, 2012 at the Bali Tourism
Institute. ITSA will use the Conference to focus experts and scholars on tourism destination
planning, development and marketing, and to generate further dialogue in Asia and around
the world. The Conference will address the most important issues in building and running
tourism destinations around the world in the 21st century. It will have a strong focus on the
development of local tangible and intangible cultures, and resort development.
This ITSA Conference will be one of the most significant tourism events to be held in
Indonesia in 2012. The ITSA Conference is supported by Ministry of Education and Culture,
Republic of Indonesia, and co-organized by several leading tourism institutions in Indonesia
as well as by the wider academic and professional research community.
This ITSA conference has invited Bu Wiendu Nuryanti, the Deputy Minister in the Ministry of
Education and Culture to present at the opening ceremony and six leading scholars from
around the world will be keynote speakers on tourism and cultural heritage development.

• China Outbound Tourism
This session will include presentations by the Chinese leading tourism experts,
scholars, and practitioners. It will be top-notch business meeting for anyone interested
in the Chinese outbound tourism market.
• Cultural and Cultural Tourism Development
This session will focus on the components and steps involved in the preparation of a
cultural development index, with particular reference to Indonesia. A panel of keynote
speakers will provide their thoughts and ideas of this topic.
! Resort Development in Nusa Dua, Bali and Lombok
This session will be opened by the Director of Bali Tourism Development Corporation,
which affiliate to local government. This presentation will focus on the Nusa Dua
resort development and the master planning for the Mandalika Resorts, Lombok.
Following this presentation, a panel of experts will discuss resort development
approaches, issues, and challenges.

This tour will be hosted by the Bali Tourism Development Corporation. Mandalika is
the next international integrated resort destination, which is strongly supported by the
Indonesian government and is seeking investors and developers from around the

Prof. Wiendu Nuryanti, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia and Professor, Gadjah Mada University Dr. Wiendu Nuryanti is a tenured Professor of
Architecture and Tourism Planning in the Dept. of
Architecture and Planning at Gadjah Mada University
in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She received her Master’s
Degree in Urban Design from the University of
Wisconsin and a Ph.D. in Tourism Planning and
Regional Development from the Universities of Surrey
and Bournemouth. Prof. Nuryanti is also Executive
Director of Stuppa Indonesia, an NGO that she
founded in 1986. In that capacity, she has acted as a senior policy advisor to local, regional
and national governments throughout Indonesia including the Ministry of Culture & Tourism,
Ministry of Education, Ministry of Women’s Affairs, and Ministry of State Enterprises. Prof.
Nuryanti and her team of consultants have also worked on projects in the fields of culture,
tourism, and development for various international organizations including the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP), UNESCO, and the UN World Tourism Organization
(UNWTO).
Jonathan B. Tourtellot, National Geographic Fellow; Founding
Director, National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations;
and Geotourism Editor, National Geographic Traveler
Jonathan Tourtellot is specializes in sustainable tourism and destination
stewardship. He is also a journalist, editor, and sometime photographer,
with a focus on travel, geography, and science. Motivated by his desire
to encourage protection of distinctive places, Tourtellot originated the
concept of geotourism, defined as “tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical
character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its
residents.” He helped the U.S. Travel Association develop the 2002 study Geotourism: The
New Trend in Travel, a landmark survey of American traveler behavior and attitudes about
issues of sustainability.
Tourtellot launched and ran the National Geographic’s Center for Sustainable Destinations
(CSD) for nine years, devoted to an economic development approach that incentivizes
protection of natural and cultural heritage. He initiated and supervised the Destination
Stewardship surveys reported 2004-2010 as the cover story in National Geographic Traveler
magazine’s November/December issue. As geotourism editor for Traveler, he has written on
such topics as green tourism, resort sprawl, climate change, nature tourism, heritage travel,
and tourism’s relation to places, including “The Two Faces of Tourism” and “The Tourism
Wars,” both winners of the Lowell Thomas award.
Tourtellot instituted National Geographic’s Geotourism MapGuide program, unique in that it
invites full participation by destination residents and so raises awareness of distinctive local
assets. Tourtellot has addressed numerous national and international groups, including the
U.N. World Tourism Organization, UNESCO, and the World Travel and Tourism Council. Last
year, he wrote the cover survey article, “Tourism: Part Threat, Part Hope,” for UNESCO’s
World Heritage Nov/Feb. magazine issue on sustainable tourism.
Prof. Michael Hitchcock, Dean, Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism, Macau University of Science and Technology Professor Michael Hitchcock is the Dean of the Faculty of
Hospitality and Tourism at the Macau University of Science and
Technology. He was previously the Academic Director of IMI Switzerland and a Deputy Dean
at the University of Chichester. He has taught at the universities of Hull and London
Metropolitan and was appointed as Professor of Tourism in 1995. He took his doctorate at
the University of Oxford in 1983 and has written and edited 14 books, as well as 40 refereed
journal papers and numerous other published outputs. His publications are mainly focused on
questions and tourism and heritage in the Asia Pacific region, as well as handicrafts and
traditional arts.
Dr Bob McKercher, Professor Tourism School of Hotel and
Tourism Management, Hong Kong Polytechnic University
He has been a tourism academic since 1990, beginning his career at
Charles Sturt University, in Australia. Prior to that, Prof McKercher
worked in the Canadian tourism industry in a variety of advocacy and
operational roles. He was also a ski instructor and back country guide.
Prof. McKercher has wide ranging research interests. He has
published over 200 scholarly papers and research reports on a variety
of cultural tourism, socio-cultural tourism, nature-based tourism, regional tourism
development, tourism marketing and tourism education issues. He is the author of The
Business of Nature-based Tourism (1998) and co-authored Cultural Tourism: The partnership
between tourism and cultural heritage management (2002). He has also co-edited two other
books. Dr McKercher is the member of the editorial board of 15 international tourism journals.
He received his PhD from the University of Melbourne in Australia, a Masters degree from
Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and his undergraduate degree from York University in
Toronto, Canada. Dr McKercher is a Fellow of CAUTHE, the Council for Australian Tourism
and Hospitality Education, and a member of the International Academy for the Study of
Tourism.

For more than 35 years Walter Jamieson has worked to bridge the
academic and consultancy worlds through creativity, innovative a
ndout of the!
box thinking. His activities have been based on a soundset of resp
onsible and sustainable values and principles. His
activities include: early work in Canada using tourism and heritag
e resources as tools for community and economic development,
research and consultancy work in China, extensive community
based tourism work in Asia, exploring the power of tourism as a tool for
economic and social development, and leadership in creating an innovative service
curriculum in Thailand.
Through his interdisciplinary education and experience, he brings creative thinking and practi
ce in a number of areas through an integrated approach to analysis and problem
solving. He has shared this development as a consultant, teacher, trainer, author, facilitator a
nd researcher in more than 20 countries. He has been a member of faculty and management
at universities in the United States, Canada, Thailand and Japan. His academic experience
has been coupled with a wide range of consultancy projects.
Based on a sound understanding of adult learning and development models he has been
involved in a wide range of capacity building exercises in many parts of the world. As a
professional planner he sees it as his responsibility to transfer knowledge and create learning
and enabling environments that ensure public and private sector stake holders can achieve
their full potential.He has held a number of executive positions in national and international
organizations.
Prof. Wu Bihu Ph.D., Director of the Center for Recreation and Tourism Research (CRTR) at Peking University
Nicknamed as Tiger, Dr. Wu Bihu is a Professor specializing in the
areas of tourism planning, tourism destination marketing and
management with Peking University's Urban and Regional Planning
Department. Prof. Wu has been a Visiting Professor to the Hong Kong
Polytechnic University, Purdue University, University of South Carolina,
East China Normal University, and Sheffield Hallam University.
He has had a wide variety of experience in tourism studies and is the author of more than
200 papers and 20 books published in China and abroad. Prof. Wu also serves as an
editorial committee member for seven international referred journals in tourism and
geography. He is a Founding Member of the International Tourism Studies Association
(ITSA). He was also elected as the Co-chair of RC 50 International Tourism at the
International Sociological Association.

General Information
Prof. Chen Shaofeng is the vice dean of Institute for Cultural Industries,
Peking University (ICIPKU), vice director of the National Research Base for Cultural
Industries Innovation and Development, professor in Department of Philosophy of Peking
University, Doctoral advisor.
He was born in Zhangpu, Fujian province in 1964. Since 1980, he has studied in Fujian
Normal University, Nanjing University, Peking University, and Japanese Waseda University
continuously, focus on education, Chinese philosophy, ethnics, and the comparative study of
modern culture between China and Japan . In 1991, he got the doctoral degree in Philosophy
in Peking University. From 1991 to 1993, he did his postdoctoral research in Institute of
Sociology and Anthropology of Peking University.
Since 1993, he has been teaching as an associate professor in department of philosophy,
Peking University. In 1996, he received the sponsor from Fok Ying Tung Education
Foundation. In 2000, he became a philosophy professor and has been participating in
academic meetings and forums in Japan, USA, Korea frequently.

Alastair M. Morrison, Ph.D., CDME, CTME, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Purdue University Professor Alastair M. Morrison is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at
Purdue University, USA specializing in the area of tourism and hospitality
marketing in the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management. In an
analysis by Ryan (2005), Professor Morrison was placed among the five most
prolific contributors in the world to the academic journals in tourism and
hospitality management. He has published more than 200 academic articles and conference
proceedings, as well as over 50 research monographs related to marketing and tourism.
Approximately 40 of his full-length academic articles have been in SSCI-listed journals. He is
the author of four books on tourism marketing and development. In addition to English, his
books are now available in Simplified Mandarin, Traditional Mandarin, Korean, and
Portuguese. Professor Morrison is an Editorial Board Member of several major hospitality
and tourism academic research journals including the Journal of Travel & Tourism Marketing,
Tourism Management, Tourism Review International, World Journal of Tourism
Development, Journal of Convention & Event Tourism, Tourism Recreation Research,
Tourism Analysis, Tourism, Culture and Communications, European Journal of Tourism
Management, World Journal of Tourism and Hospitality Management, and Journal of Quality
Assurance in Tourism and Hospitality.
Professor Morrison is active in several major industry associations. He has served as
Chairman of the Travel & Tourism Research Association (TTRA) - Canada Chapter, Board
member of the CenStates TTRA Chapter, Vice President of the International Society of
Travel and Tourism Educators (ISTTE), and Chairman of Association of Travel Marketing
Executives (ATME). He was awarded the distinction as one of the first recipients of the
Certified Travel Marketing Executive (CTME) designation from ATME. He has designed and
presented the Destination Marketing Planning, Travel Information & Research, International
Tourism & Convention Marketing, and Communications and Technology in Destination
Management courses for the International Association of Convention & Visitor Bureaus
(IACVB) as part of its Certified Destination Management Executive (CDME) Program and is a
Co-Director of that program.

Dr.Shen Han, Assistant Professor in the Tourism Department of Fudan
University in China
Dr. Shen Han has a background in marketing and was educated in China
and the UK. She graduated with a Ph.D. in Tourism Management from the
Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and worked in the School of Hotel
and Tourism Management, Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a Post-
doctoral Fellow in 2006-2008. Dr. Han’s thesis analyzed the development of
the economy hotel sector in China. Her main research area is destination marketing,
consumer behavior, and service management. Dr. Shen has extensive research and
consultancy experience in destination branding, tourism development and planning, and
quality management of China’s hotel and tourism industry. She has conducted many
consulting projects for CNTA, provincial governments, and local authorities. Dr. Shen has
published and presented her research works in many journals and at international
conferences in China, Switzerland, USA, and Malaysia.
Dr.Mimi Li , Assistant Professor ,School of Hotel and Tourism
Management ,The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Dr. Mimi Li joined the School of Hotel & Tourism Management as Assistant
Professor in 2007. Before that, she taught at Purdue University as a graduate
assistant. She has been involved in a number of consultancy projects in tourism
marketing in the US, and in tourism planning in Mainland China. Her area of
interest is China outbound tourism, tourism planning, and consumer behavior.
