Team organisation in Phase-2
Overall organisation concept
Planned Improvements in Phase-2
Ø Consolidation of ozone products portfolio à longer time-series
Ø Continued improvement of retrieval algorithms for nadir UV sensors à soft calibrations, cloud correction scheme, add OMI (and OMPS), harmonise columns and profiles (one single nadir EOST).
Ø Include IASI instrument (improved information content in UTLS).
Ø New focus on tropospheric data products, using 4 different approaches à nadir profiles (UV and TIR), CCD, limb-nadir matching, assimilation
Ø Extend altitude range of limb products à UTLS and mesosphere
Ø Link/merge European data sets to historical US data series.
Plans for nadir sensors • EOST-1 & 2 merged into one single nadir EOST • IASI added to UV sensors • Year-1: Consolidation of CRDP
Ø Full processing GOME, SCIA, GOME-2 profiles Ø Extended total column processing to OMI Ø Adapt IASI FORLI scheme for CCI consistency
• Year-2: New algorithms Ø Improve soft calibrations for columns and profiles Ø Improve consistency of column/profile algorithms, incl. clouds Ø Improve data assimilation schemes (ingest all nadir sensors)
• Year-3: Final (re)processing Ø Complete reprocessing GOME, SCIA, GOME-2, OMI, IASI Ø Merge/ assimilate full CCI and NASA data series
Plans for limb sensors (I) • Year-1: Continuation and consolidation of CRDP
– Reprocessing of data/new data versions – Update of HARMOZ and other L3 data à “covering all
years” • Year-2: Development of new algorithms
– Improvements of Level 3 data / Lifetime data record – Special UTLS datasets (e.g. tropopause referenced
datasets) – Extension into the mesosphere (diurnal/daytime variation) – Tropospheric ozone (e.g. limb-nadir matching) and
comparison w/ other data
Plans for limb sensors (II) • Year-3: Final processing and inclusion of US
sensors – Final processing of L3 datasets (stratosphere,
mesosphere, troposphere) – Updated level 3 and merged data including US
sensors (HALOE, SAGEs, MLS, OMPS) – Inclusion of mesospheric data in the merged data – Trends and variability studies
Troposphere/UTLS developments
• TWG: Tropospheric Working Group • Involves EOST, VALT and CRG teams • Coordinates development of new tropospheric products,
provides forum for exchange between teams • 5 different approaches to tropospheric product
development planned in Phase-2: Ø OE nadir profiling (UV, TIR, optional combined UV/TIR)
Ø Tropical tropospheric ozone based on cloud clearing (CCD) Ø Limb-nadir matching approach Ø Tropospheric ozone from assimilated nadir fields
Ø Special UTLS (tropopause-referenced limb product)
Processing system in Phase-2
Main features Ø flexible harmonized
distributed and scalable system.
Ø easy way to integrate algorithm improvements.
Ø acceleration of reprocessing campaigns
Ø configuration management Ø standardised validation
routines Ø product access capability
CRG - Evaluation and prediction
Satellite data
E39C-A „free running“
Dameris and Loyola, 2011
CRG outlook for phase-2 • Links to international activities:
Ø WCRP Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5); ü IPCC 5th assessment report (2013); Ø SPARC/IGAC Chemistry-Climate Model Initiative (CCMI); ü UNEP/WMO Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion: 2014.
• Use data available from climate, chemistry-climate (CCM) and chemistry-transport model (CTM) simulations: Ø For example: CCMI Ref-C1SD* (1980-2012) ü Analyses of short-term fluctuations and long-term trends; ü Among others: column versus profile trends;
• Contribution of CRG to establish consistent ECVs Ø confrontation of multiple ECV parameters to the output of the Chemistry-
Climate Models operated by the Ozone_cci CRG
