Amanda Waller

“Overexpression of myocardial sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase pump rescues glucose transport during diabetes”

Amanda Waller grew up in the small town of Belleville, Ontario, Canada. She completed her undergraduate studies in Biological Science and a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology at the University of Guelph in Ontario. Her Ph.D. thesis focused on skeletal muscle substrate utilization in racehorses. Based on that experience, Dr. Waller wanted to expand her knowledge of muscle glucose utilization while applying it to the $eld of human and animal health. "erefore she was very keen to join the laboratory of Dr. Lacombe at "e Ohio State University as a Post-Doctoral Fellow, where she is using state-of-the-art techniques to study glucose transport during diabetes in rodents and horses. It is hoped that this translational research will bene$t the many humans and animals that are a!ected with diabetes worldwide.

“Towards map-based cloning of the broad-spectrum resistance gene Pi40(t) to rice

blast”

Hongmei Yang is a visiting scholar from China Agricultural University, Beijing P.R. China. She has a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from Inner Mongolia Agricultural University. Yang just completed 6 months of research at Ohio State and will continue her activities here for another year and a half. She participated in projects of the “948” China National Basic Research Program at the Laboratory of Rice Molecular Genetics at China Agricultural University and identi$ed potential blast resistance introgression lines. In addition, Yang has mapped a novel rice blast resistance QTL on rice chromosome 9 of Oryza. She is a native of China.

Hong-yi Zhang is an international scholar from the People’s Republic of China. He graduated from Tongji Medical College of the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, receiving his Medical Degree in June 2007. In September 2007, he began residency training in Pediatric Surgery at Tongji Hospital, Wuhan, China. He applied for an international visiting scholar position at "e Ohio State University and was very fortunate to be accepted into Dr. Gail Besner’s laboratory at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Under her mentorship since November 2007, he has been investigating the mechanisms by which heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) and its ability to protect the intestines from ischemia/reperfusion injury.
