2. Installation of the Samsung 4G Dongle Drivers

Before you can start using your Samsung 4G Dongle, you will need to install the drivers on to your computer. You must have local Admin Rights on your PC to install the Dongle software on your PC and it is recommended that you backup you PC and close all applications prior to installing the drivers. It is also recommended that where possible your local IT department performs the installation to avoid any problems with laptops with a particular corporate build that may not be compatible with the 4G dongle drivers. The instructions are the same for both Windows (XP, Vista, 7) and Mac OS, but keep an eye on the O2 4G trials website for updates.

It should be noted that by agreeing to take part in the trial and installing the 4G dongle drivers you accept that O2 will not be held responsible for loss of user data during the 4G trials.

To install the Samsung 4G Dongle Software:

1) Make sure you are within the coverage area shown in Figure 1 to enable you to connect to the LTE network once the driver installation is complete.

2) Insert your LTE Dongle into the USB port on the PC that you intend to use for the trial.

b. After a few seconds, you will see the dialogue box below appear on your screen.

3) Click Next to begin the installation.

Notes on installing the Samsung 4G Dongle and 4G connectivity.

Any problems installing the connection manager software?

Any problems getting the dongle to connect to the network?

Did the connection ever drop unexpectedly in good coverage? If so please describe the issue and record the date and time.

3. Suggested Trial Activity

Please use the 4G trial network as you would your home fixed broadband network, it’s free (we won’t charge you anything for the data that you consume) and there are no limits to the amount of data you can download – in fact we actually encourage you to use the network as much as possible! Your 4G Dongle can theoretically achieve a throughput of up to 100Mbps in the downlink and 50Mbps in the uplink although you’re likely to see a typical throughput of around 20-50Mbps in the downlink and 10-20Mbps in the uplink. If you run out of ideas of how to test the 4G network below are a few ideas. General Web Browsing Testing Try visiting some of the external high bandwidth websites listed below. Have a play on the sites, click a few of the links, and make a note if you see any “Buffering” on the sites.

www.bbc.co.uk http://news.sky.com/skynews/ http://www.o2.co.uk/ http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/

TIP: If you want to clear your locally stored “cached” copy of the site just press F5 (internet explorer) or CTRL F5 (Firefox) this will make your browser download a clean copy of the webpage.

Compare the speed of download on 4G to the speed on another PC connected across a fixed LAN or WiFi connection. Is 4G faster or slower?

Are you getting a true broadband web experience?

Any other comments?

Video Streaming Testing Video streaming is very bandwidth hungry and if anything is going to “stress” the 4G network this is it. Have a go at streaming videos from some of the following sites.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/ Normal BBC iPlayer Site http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/tv/bbc_hd BBC HD iPlayer Site http://vimeo.com/hd Vimeo HD Site http://www.youtube.com/ Youtube Site – remember to select 720p/1080p from the bottom right hand corner of the Youtube player for higher definition streams.

Some example streams are given below. If you get an error just refresh the page or press F5:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfffzRJ9nVs (320p/480p Video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZx-m5qQPD0 (320p/480p/720p Video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRwiwgqUtVc (320p/480p/720p/1080p Video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmwOml5WYjE (320p/480p/720p/1080p Video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i2RCBa3l-g (320p/480p/720p/1080p Video)

Also to watch live TV on your PC check out the following website - it’s free but you need to sign up. http://www.tvcatchup.com, or check out BBC iPlayer’s new live streaming service.

Notes on video streaming on LTE network, buffer time, quality of videos (image quality not video/musical tastes please). Again compare the experiencing of video streaming on 4G to the speed on another PC connected across a fixed LAN or WiFi connection. Is 4G faster or slower to start the video? Is the quality better or worse on 4G?

Internet Bandwidth Speed Tests

If you want to test the speed of the 4G network try one of the following online speed checkers. http://www.speedtest.net/ Speedtest.net http://fwd.channel5.com/adv/broadbandspeedtest Gadget Show Speed Checker

What sort of Downlink and Uplink speeds did you achieve? What was the latency achieved?

How does this compare to a PC on the LAN or WiFi?

VoIP and Video Call Testing If you have Skype or a similar internet voice service installed on your PC and a built in or external microphone/speakers/headset have a go at performing a voice call to a friend. If you have a webcam have a go making a Skype video call to a friend. Notes on Skype voice and video calling if you get chance to try it. Did it work, was the sound quality good? If you made a video call how was the quality? Was there a long delay on the call? Was the voice and video in sync?

And that’s it for now, thanks for taking time to run the tests, the 4G Trials Team at O2 look forward to receiving your feedback and look out for some further invitations to take part in some co-ordinated tests to really stress the network in the coming weeks/months.
