Learn how to apply basic statistical tests to research reports typically seen in medical literature. This workshop explores the most commonly used tests including t-tests, analysis of variance, tests for equivalence, Z-test of proportions, odds ratios and relative risk ratios, chi-square, correlation, and linear regression. Practical examples and problems drawn from scientific research will be used to illustrate statistical concepts and mathematical procedures. Emphasis is on the appropriate use of statistics and the interpretation of their results.

This session provides a half-day condensed, advanced level program in contemporary topics for ambulatory care phar-macy professionals and will focus on public health issues in the ambulatory care setting including immunization, smoking cessation, obesity, and health screenings.

This session provides a half-day condensed, advanced level program in contemporary topics for pharmacotherapy profes-sionals. Faculty will focus on new knowledge and patient care problems in pharmacotherapy practice. Topics include Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and febrile neutropenia, will focus on new knowledge and patient care problems in pharmacotherapy practice. Specific topics will be announced shortly.

This advanced-level session provides programming on contemporary topics for busy pharmacotherapy professionals in a condensed half-day format. Key clinical studies in cardiology will be discussed with faculty providing an analysis of the study design and statistics used in the trials. The applicability of the studies to current practice will also be addressed by faculty.

One of the most admired and respected leaders in America today, General Colin Powell offers his thoughts on domestic and world affairs, leadership and a vision for tomorrow.

A man of supreme intel-ligence, versatility and presence, General Colin Powell served as the first African-American chair-man of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and was appointed secretary of state by Presi-dent George W. Bush—becoming, at that time, the most powerful African-American ever to hold office. A four-star general, Powell’s numerous awards include two Presidential Medals of Freedom, and he is the author of his best-selling autobiography, My Ameri-can Journey. His second book, an instant New York Times best seller titled It Worked For Me (May 2012), reveals the lessons that shaped his life and career. Featured Speaker: Mark J. ratain, M.D.

Dr. Ratain is a graduate of Harvard College and Yale University School of Medicine. His postgraduate training was completed at Johns Hopkins Hospital (Internal Medicine), and the University of Chicago Hospitals (Hematology/Oncology). He is currently the Leon O. Jacobson Professor of Medicine, and the Director of the Center for Personalized Therapeutics and Chief Hospital Pharmacologist. In addition, he serves as the Associate Director for Clinical Sciences in the University’s Comprehen-sive Cancer Center, leads the University of Chicago’s phase I oncology trials program and is co-director of the Pharmacogenomics of Anticancer Agents Research Group. Dr. Ratain’s research focuses on the development of new oncology drugs and diagnostics, and he is an international leader in phase I clinical trials, pharmacogenomics, and clinical trial methodology, with over 250 original publications.

Educational ObjectivesThe 2013 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting educational programs are developed to maintain and enhance the knowledge, skills, and abili-ties of pharmacists and associated personnel in healthcare systems through skill building and active participation in sessions on impor-tant issues relevant to contemporary practice. Target AudienceActivities are planned and structured to meet either the knowledge- or application-based educational needs of pharmacists and/or pharmacy technicians in a variety of healthcare systems. This includes those practicing in large and small hospitals, managed care facilities, inpatient facilities, outpatient clinics, and homecare settings, as well as in aca-demia and the pharmaceutical industry. Knowledge-based sessions are designed primarily for acquiring factual knowledge; application-based sessions, primarily to apply the information learned in the time allotted.

Fundamental Strategies to Secure a residency: Getting a Head Start as P1-P3

In the tough competition for post graduate positions, how can you stand out? After this presentation you will have fundamental tips, a timeline, and answers to some of the questions you may have, including: When do I start planning my residency search strategy? How can I set up a plan and task list to keep myself on target for success as early as a P1 student? How can I excel in the interview process? You will receive candid advice, and guid-ance that will be directly applicable to your hunt for a post gradu-ate residency or fellowship. You will be able to follow an outline of what you will need to do as a student during the P1 to P3 years in order to successfully prepare yourself for the residency or fellowship application process. There is no ultimate guarantee of securing a post graduate training program. However, session presenter Joshua Caballero, Pharm.D., BCPP, Associate Profes-sor at Nova Southeastern University is one of the faculty that put together a course that helped their students achieve an 83% residency acceptance rate, compared to the national average of 60% in the most recent match, making this one of the most suc-cessful residency preparation programs in the nation!
