Dear Members & Friends of the STA,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 Subcontractors Trade Association Construction Awards Dinner.

The Subcontractors Trade Association (STA) was founded in 1966 by a group of New York City subcontractors and suppliers who recognized the need for greater representation. Now the STA represents over 350 companies in every field within the construction industry.

Since its inception over 50 years ago, the STA has had a large hand in making a positive difference for subcontractors in many different areas.

The STA advocates on behalf of its members with public and private owners, construction managers and general contractors to ensure that subcontractors receive fair and equitable treatment on their jobs. The STA also maintains an active legislative program in Albany, proposing and advocating for the passage of legislation that is advantageous to our members. In addition, the STA provides a regular communication network to keep its members informed of issues and events through its newsletter, bulletins and educational seminars.

This celebration of the construction industry is truly a celebration of the great city of New York, and all of those who have helped build it. From Hudson Yards, to Yankee Stadium and Barclays Center; Citifield, the Bank of America Tower and One57 57th Street; from the original 1 & 2 World Trade Centers to One World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial Museum: our member companies and friends have worked day in and day out to make our city’s iconic skyline what it is today.

I thank each and every one of you for your participation in our event tonight; your support of the Annual Awards Dinner every year is the foundation on which our association is built.

Builder of the Year

Richard Kennedy President & CEOSkanska USA Building

Richard Kennedy leads Skanska USA Building’s senior management team and its more than 3,200 construction professionals nationwide to deliver world-class construction services within the building sector across the United States. As USA Building’s leader, Richard is committed to collaborating with customers and to promoting an ethical, transparent and

inclusive culture that allows all USA Building employees to do what they do best in service of Skanska’s customers, each and every day.

Prior to being appointed President and CEO of USA Building, Richard served as the Chief Operating Officer for the company’s Metro New York and New Jersey operations, beginning in 2009. As COO, he focused on building the company’s market position and talent base. Working with his team, the company’s New York City revenues more than doubled during his tenure. He played a key role in winning major projects such as the $4 billion redevelopment of LaGuardia Airport Central Terminal B, and led the region to become a significant player In the healthcare space. He also oversaw the successful execution of marquee, complex projects such as the United Nations Headquarters Renovation, the Advanced Science Research Center for the City University of New York, the World Trade Center Transportation HUB and MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, among others.

A 21-year veteran of the construction industry, Richard joined Skanska in 2004 as the company’s General Counsel and In that role led the development of the legal and risk management functions. He serves as one of the company’s Ethics Champions and is a strong supporter of the Skanska Women’s Network and the Skanska Mentoring Program, both of which are committed to developing tomorrow’s talent from across the company.

In addition to his day-to-day operational duties, Richard is an active construction industry participant and currently serves as Co-Chair for the Building Trades Employers’ Association of New York City (BTEA), Director of the New York Building Contractors Association and Board Member of the New York ACE Mentor Program. He has been the recipient of various industry awards and devotes his time to various charitable organizations.

Labor Leader of the Year

Patrick Dolan, Jr.PresidentEnterprise Association of Steamfitters Local Union 638

Patrick Dolan, Jr. is the President of Enterprise Association of Steamfitters Local Union 638. As President, Mr. Dolan presides over all meetings, appoints all committees and exerts a general supervision over the interests of the association.

Mr. Dolan joined the union as an apprentice in 1987 and completed the five-year apprenticeship program in 1992. He then went on to work on a variety of construction projects as a mechanic, foreman and shop steward. In 1995, Mr. Dolan was elected to the Finance Board for three years. This was followed by a six-year term on the 638 Executive Board. In 2004, Mr. Dolan was elected to his first salaried position as Business Agent. He served as Business Agent for eight years until his election as President of the union in February of 2011.

Currently as President, Mr. Dolan serves as chairman of the Steamfitters Industry Trust Funds. This encompasses the Pension, Medical, Security Benefit, Educational and Vacation Funds of the union and includes twelve union trustees. He is chairman of the Political Action Committee of Local 638.

Mr. Dolan was elected Vice-President of District One by his International Union. He is also a seated Executive Board Member of the Long Island Federation of Labor, New York City Central Labor Council, Executive Council Member New York State AFL-CIO, Member of the New York City Building and Construction Trades Council, Nassau and Suffolk Building Trades Council, New York City Masters Plumbers and Master Fire Suppression Piping Contractors Licensing Board, Town of Hempstead Labor Advisory Council, Director of the Outreach Program and Director of The Edward J. Malloy Initiative for Construction Skills, Inc..

Pat was appointed by the Governor of New York, and then elected by the New York State Assembly and Senate to serve on the State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council.

He was honored in Irish American’s Labor Legacy from the Irish Echo and honored by the Liberty Democratic Association, the Ridgewood Democratic Club and the Taminent Regular Club. Among his duties as President of Local 638, Mr. Dolan has negotiated several collective bargaining agreements between the Union and the Mechanical Contractors Association in both the construction and metal trades division. These negotiations set the wages and working conditions for 8,300 members.

Mr. Joseph Leo is the President of Atlantic Contracting & Specialties, LLC. As a specialties subcontractor, Atlantic specializes in mechanical insulation, abatement, and firestop

systems within the commercial and industrial markets. Mr. Leo is responsible for overseeing all branch and project operations, safety, and labor relations for the company’s work throughout New York and New England. With operations in five states, he also manages administration, personnel, and business development for Atlantic.

Mr. Leo has 40 years of construction industry experience and has spent the last 18 years with Atlantic. He has overseen the construction of many of today’s high profile New York City projects including:

• The World Trade Center’s Transportation Hub• Columbia University• Fordham Law School• NYU Polytech• Croton Water Pollution Control Plant• Astoria ll co-generation power plant• One Bryant Park• The New School’s University Center

Mr. Leo currently serves as Co-chairman of the Building Trades Employers’ Association; President of the Insulation Contractor’s Association of New York City; Treasurer of the Insulation Contractor’s Association of Southern New York; Treasurer of the Subcontractors Trade Association; Co-chairman of the Trust Funds for the Heat and Frost Insulators for both New York City and Westchester, and Trustee on the Funds in Connecticut. He is a board member of the National Insulation Association, former President and current board member of the Eastern States Insulation Contractors Association, and a board member of the National Union Insulation Contractor Alliance. He also serves on Irex Corporation’s Senior Management Team.

Lifetime Achievement

Joseph A. FerraraFerrara Bros.

Joseph A. Ferrara, began his business career as a contractor with his father and one of his brothers upon his discharge from the U.S. Army in 1957. He operated JVJ Construction until the formation of Ferrara Bros. Building Materials Corp. in 1969. Under his direction, along with his four brothers, the Ferrara Bros. firm grew from the smallest supplier of ready mixed concrete to the largest in New York City supplying many landmark projects. The firm continues today under the leadership of his son, Joseph J. Ferrara, for the publicly traded US Concrete.

As a person who seeks to promote the welfare of others by donating time and money to various causes, he is the Chairman Emeritus of the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Queens, having served for many years as its President and Chairman. His commitment to this organization over 45 years has been monumental and he initiated and spearheaded an $11 million capital campaign and oversaw the building of a state-of-the-art facility for the children of Queens.

Mr. Ferrara has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Jamaica Hospital since 1999. He and his family have been generous supporters of The Ferrara Family Center for Hospice Care at Jamaica Hospital, which recently embarked on a $1.2 million capital campaign to renovate and expand the existing hospice unit. Throughout his long career, he has served on many Construction Industry Committees. Since 1992, he has been an Employer Trustee for Teamster Local 282 Trust funds and recently appointed Trustee of the Sandhogs Local 147 Benefit Funds.
