History of the MCC SealThe MCC seal was adopted in June 1978. The center of the seal is the “Zia,” an Indian symbol for the sun. In the four sections separated by the Zia are: the mountains, an Indian symbol for abundance; crossed picks, symbolizing Mohave County’s rich mining heritage; a saguaro cactus, an Indian symbol for the desert; and a burning oil lamp, the traditional symbol for learning and knowledge.

Kathy Hodel has worked tirelessly much of her life to help promote higher education in Mohave County and the tristate region. Helping others is a passion she has held in her heart as long as she can remember. “I get such an amazing feeling when I see the work we’ve done and how it helps the students who are working so hard to get an education and improve their lives,” said Hodel, who has helped raise countless dollars for student scholarships through the MCC Foundation. The Kathy Hodel Most Outstanding Student Award will provide $10,000 cash to one grad-uating MCC student each year. This is a one-of-a-kind award, no other college offers this

kind of no strings attached cash award for a graduate. The money may be used as the recipi-ent wants, preferably to pay off student loans or continue their education. This incredible award was established through an endowment gift provided by Dr. James H. Childe to honor his friend, Kathy Hodel. Kathy Hodel will forever be honored at MCC for her countless hours and efforts working to help MCC students. She asks that everyone remember the importance of service before self, and do what you can to help worthy causes in your own community.

Dr. James H. Childe has a passion for helping others. He earned his Juris Doctor from the Uni-versity of Nebraska-Lincoln and became a successful attorney. He and his loving wife, Jeanne, raised a wonderful family in Nebraska. When Jeanne passed away, he decided to start a new chapter in life and combine his pas-sion for education and helping others. “Education made me who I am, it changes lives,” said Childe, who along the way to be-coming a successful attorney, also earned a Master of Business Administration. His wife had family property in Lake Havasu City, which would help keep him connected to her while he started his new chapter.

“I came here to Mohave County, I saw MCC and I decided to be a teacher,” he said.He started teaching business classes at the col-lege in 1993. “I was immediately impressed with the stu-dents,” he said. “They are very intelligent and motivated to improve their lives.” Dr. Childe retired from MCC in 2012, but his legacy will live on much longer. He set up a $200,000 endowment to honor outstanding graduating students. The first Kathy Hodel Most Outstanding Stu-dent Award winner will be announced today. The student will receive $10,000 cash, thanks to Dr. James H. Childe.

Mohave Community College can thank the cold winters of the upper Midwest for helping Stephen Eaton decide it was time for a change in his life. “I’m originally from Michigan, but while vacationing in southern California, I fell in love with the desert and the mild winters and thought ’this is where I need to be,’” said Ea-ton. He earned his Bachelor of Education from Central Michigan University then relocated to Independence, Missouri where he taught high school English and Theatre Arts. During that time, he pursued his Master of Higher Edu-cation Administration from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Over the summer of 2017 he joined MCC as the Chief Academic Officer. He oversees all faculty and instruction at the college’s four campuses. Before MCC, he worked at Barstow Community College in California where he was Vice President of Academic Affairs. He believes the great thing about commu-nity colleges is their flexibility in answering the needs of the community, and said that is clearly what MCC is doing. “In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve seen how motivated the team is in providing rel-evant and viable programs to the county as quickly as they can.” MCC is an exciting fit for him and matches his higher education experiences perfectly.

Josh Zeman started at MCC when he was 15 years old as a dual enrollment student. “I met such a diverse group of other stu-dents,” he said. “From veterans to parents looking to get a degree so they can get a better career, to other students my own age - all of us there to learn.” He worked two part time jobs while earn-ing his MCC business degree. Some days he’s helping people in the Havasu Campus Precol-lege Studies office, other days he may be the one serving you a latte at the Starbucks drive through on the north side of Havasu. “I love how close-knit the community is, es-pecially the MCC campus. I know just about

everyone at MCC and I always tell people it’s such a friendly place, and you get an excel-lent, affordable education, plus free tutoring and great faculty.” Zeman is a perfect example of a student who knows the value of working hard, and learning all you can. “Education is lifelong learning, we should always try to keep learning as much as we can. For me learning new things is a passion that will help me achieve my dreams.” After graduation he will pursue a bach-elor’s in business management and marketing through ASU online.
