Phil and I met at an intense time for the one of his brands - he as marketing director for Charles Wells, me as strategist engaged to work on some of his brands. Rik Mayall, the face of the very successful Bombardier brand, had just died and we were trying to balance what was right for the business, right for our audience but, above all, what was the right thing to do as human beings. As a client, he always seems to have an acute perception for both the needs of the business, as well as an intuitive feel for the audiences he’s reaching.. From ensuring a steady stream of audience insight, developing new products, like the Charlie Wells craft beer, through to embedding rigorous brand planning across the portfolio and delivering those plans to audiences and, critically, to the trade, too. With his wide client experience, I strongly suspect he’d be a useful chap to have in the tent if you’re a marketing services company, too. I’d make time for a pint or two with him.
