46- house ad promo- where is this?

Summary Letter “Where is This” started out as an idea that was “never going to go anywhere, and no one would ever sponsor the space” to becoming the most popular features in the paper. The newspaper comes out early every Thursday morning and we start getting phone calls shortly after 5am. We get hundreds of calls, and both the subscriptions won and the gift certificates awarded are only part of the fun. Some families who have won repeatedly, even call to see if the 3 months have passed and they are allowed to play again! Some weeks the tiny corner of a photo is guessed immediately, and some are a little harder to figure out. This campaign promotes the paper, the advertiser, the circulation and readership!

Staff Report

Late summer sees a higher population ofmosquitoes in Garfield County, creating anincreased risk of West Nile Virus. Thestrongest concentrations of the type of mos-quitoes that may carry the virus have beenfound in the Parachute and Grand Valleyarea, due to the warmer temperatures andlower altitude than the rest of the county.

West Nile Virus is carried by certaininfected birds and transmitted to people bybites from mosquitoes that have fed onthese birds.

“In areas where these mosquitoes arefound, less than 1 percent may be infectedwith West Nile Virus,” said Dr. MichaelWeissmann, an entomologist and surveil-lance manager for Colorado MosquitoControl. “Late summer is typically whenthe risk of West Nile increases, due tohigher temperatures.”

Mosquitoes are trapped and tested bythe Colorado Department of Public Healthand Environment to determine whetherWest Nile is present.

“None of the mosquitoes trapped in

Garfield County have tested positive forWest Nile this season,” said Steve Anthony,Garfield County vegetation manager.

As of Aug. 24, mosquito populations weredeclining overall throughout GarfieldCounty. However, the Lyons Park rest areain Rifle and Cottonwood Park in Parachutestill had elevated mosquito populations.Expected cooler weather in the weeks tocome could significantly decrease the adultpopulations as fall starts to arrive.

Monitoring of the counts will continueusing traps set by Colorado Mosquito Con-trol around the county. An update of theprior week’s mosquito monitoring will beposted on the county website throughoutthe summer and early fall every Monday.

Go to www.garfield-county.com, click on“mosquito counts.” Resources for West NileVirus are linked from the home page.

Good prevention includes following therecommendations of the “Fight the Bite!”campaign, and recommendations from theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention.
