UPCOMING EVENTS
Dear all,
Praised be Jesus Christ Our Lord!
I am writing to you to share some exciting good news. Following a conversation with Bishop Daly, I am happy to share
that he hopes to have me serving this community for some years.
Second is news regarding the school. Our school has struggled the last several years both in enrollment and financially.
As I came in last year, my commitment, and that of our Bishop, was to work on finding a way to bring St. Charles
School to a better place. For the last few months I have dedicated myself to evaluating the situation and discerning a path
forward. It was clear to all of us involved in the administration, that we needed to find a “niche” for our school – some-
thing which would differentiate our school from the other Catholic schools in the area. After evaluating different direc-
tions, consulting and discerning, I have asked permission from our Bishop to transition our own St. Charles School from
Diocesan Curriculum to a Classical Liberal Arts Curriculum model. The school will remain our parochial school and we
intend to keep working with our amazing staff, it will continue to be the main evangelizing mission of our parish. From
the many benefits I can foresee happening in the future, I would like to mention a few here.
1. This transition has proven to revitalize other schools that were struggling all over the country.
2. It will certainly be a completely different option for Catholic families in the Spokane area. The historical fluctuation
of our enrollment numbers has, in part, been correlated to the enrollment of nearby Catholic schools. As neighboring
schools decreased, we would increase, and vice versa. That is in part because we are “competing” for the same fami-
lies. Changing to a new educational model will bring other families, without continuing on that path of the past.
3. From the faith perspective, this focus will be more helpful both for teachers and students. Having an integrated cur-
riculum in Catholic liberal arts education connects every subject and reality with God and His revelation. While con-
tinuing to learn the different subjects, students learn how they relate to each other, and how God and faith can be dis-
covered through them. Children are educated to know and desire, in every way, He who is the source of all Beauty,
Goodness and Truth.
4. From the educational point of view, it will greatly help the kids and their parents. A program of study modeled after
the Trivium (that is grammar, logic and rhetoric), engages the natural stages of a child’s development and their desire
to learn.
I am truly excited about this opportunity. I, myself, was classically trained in my younger years, and I have no doubt
how helpful it has been to me in my personal growth, ministry, and missions around the world.
I do ask you to kindly keep us all in your prayers in this new adventure which we are about to begin, and I am truly
grateful to God and to you for your support.
In Christ,
Fr. Soler

FRANCISCAN CORNER
The first companion of St. Francis was a rich and wise man, Ber-nard of Quintavalle. Bernard had seen Francis renounce his com-fortable life and wondered why. One day, Bernard invited Francis to stay with him. During the night, when Francis thought Bernard was asleep, Francis got up and prayed over and over the words: “My God, my God” and nothing more. Bernard, who was not asleep, was inspired by Francis’ prayer and in the morning told Francis he wanted to join him. Together they went to Mass and afterwards asked the priest to open the Gospels 3 times to see what their path should be. The passages said, “Go sell what you have and give to the poor. Take nothing for your journey. Let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me”. This Bernard did and so began the Franciscan order. What can we learn? Ex-ample has power. Whose example have you followed? Who is following your example and what are they learning?
