OCTOBER 11, 2015 TWENTY- EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Jottings from Fr. Joe…

IN HIS ADDRESS TO CONGRESS, Pope Francis mentioned two Catholic writers and activists who contributed to the shape of the faith in our nation. Thomas Merton, known in religion Father Louis, was a convert to Catholicism who became a Trappist monk in the 1940’s. He opened the vista of contemplative monastic life in 20th century America. The Reading Group of the parish will look at his autobiography The Seven Story Mountain for discussion. The group will meet on Thursday, November 15 at 7:30 PM in the Saint Edward rectory. All are welcome.

THE MONTH OF OCTOBER is traditionally a time of dedication to Our Lady of the Rosary. Each Wednesday and Thursday evening, the Rosary is prayed before the Blessed Sacrament for a two-fold intention: an end to abortion and an increase to vocations to the priesthood and religious life. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is October 7 and commemorates the defeat of the Ottoman Turkish fleet at the Battle of Lepanto which saved Europe from an invasion and destruction. Pope Saint Pius V urged the armor of prayer for victory and all Europe was caught up in the recitation of the rosary. I wonder if peace would prevail in our world today and terror would end if all Catholics prayed the rosary each day.

THE MONTH OF OCTOBER is also a time for prayer and support of the mission endeavors of the Church. Not only do the missionaries provide the fundamentals of the Christian faith, they are often at the forefront of education and health care in the areas to which they bring the gospel. The Diocese of Pittsburgh sponsors a medical facility and school in Chimbote, Peru as a sign of the universal call to evangelization. Each year parishes nationwide host a missionary or a representative of a mission church. The Society of the Propagation of the Faith continues to reach out with resources for those parishes and dioceses in need throughout the world where the message of the gospel is striving to make inroads. World Mission Sunday is October 18 and there will be a second collection at all Masses.

THE ANNUAL OCTOBER COUNT gives the diocesan planning office an idea for future planning in the diocese which includes the distribution of clergy (whose numbers continue to shrink) and for streamlining of ministries (CCD, youth ministry, sacramental prep, etc.) between parishes.

POPE FRANCIS PEARLS:

“If they want me to recite the Creed, I can do it.” News Conference aboard his flight from Cuba to the U.S. in response to a criticism that he “wasn’t Catholic enough.”- September 22, 2015

“The common home of all men and women must be built on the understanding of a certain sacredness of created nature.” Address to the United Nations-September 25, 2015
