45 YEARS &COUNTING

ANNUAL REPORTNATIONAL SPORTS CENTER

FOR THE DISABLED

2014–2015

“Having the chance to understand the NSCD programs and meet the people was eye opening. They are an incredibly impressive group doing really good things.” Steve Burns

Our thanks to Steve, who spent a day with NSCD photographing our participants and volunteers. He arrived with little understanding of our organization and left in awe of the spirit, character and commitment of everyone involved.

In 1970, a ski instructor in Winter Park, Colorado volunteered to teach 23 children with amputations to ski. Hal O’Leary had no idea how this could be done, but his selfless gesture and commitment to delivering on his promise resulted in the educational program that today allows people with all types of disabilities to learn to ski, kayak, rock climb, ride horses and more. It began the legacy of the National Sports Center for the Disabled.

Today, nearly 40% of our participants’ first sport or recreational experience is through the NSCD. 80% of participants continue to pursue recreational therapy and sports following their first experience. The participants, volunteers and families introduced on the following pages are a small sampling of those who describe their NSCD relationship as life changing.

Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments made possible by the dedication of everyone that is a part of the NSCD. Our 45th anniversary affirms our amazing success in delivering on our mission – enabling the human spirit through therapeutic sport and recreation. This milestone year is also a time for affirming our continuing commitment to the next 45 years.

SHANNAN WILLIAMSParticipant

Shannan never lets her cerebral palsy slow her down. She started skiing with the NSCD when she was only three years old. Her parents wanted Shannan to experience the thrill of skiing. She recently graduated from the Univeristy Colorado Denver with a degree in Sociology. Her confidence continues to flourish through thephysical and mental benefits of exercise, building core strength and engaging motor skills as a participant in the NSCD’s many programs. “I feel equal when I’m on

the mountain.” Shannan Williams

NATE GILLETTE AND TONY PETERSInstructors

Tony Peters, expert NSCD supervisor and instructor, finds solutions to the constant challenges of teaching and adapting equipment for people with disabilities. He is our go-to guy for sign language and communicating with people with hearing loss. Tony is a certified instructor for adaptive alpine, snowboard, rock climbing and as a river guide.

“Even after 25 years, I never tire of finding solutions to adapt our activity and equipment to each person’s specific needs. I can’t imagine being anywhere else.” Tony Peters

Nate Gillette is a devoted people person. He is a winter program coordinator and rafting team leader. With his contagious enthusiasm, he builds relationships and successful learning partnerships with participants. “Working here is a dream job.I love seeing breakthrough moments – those times when my students accomplish somethingthey never imagined possible.” Nate Gillette

BETH REQUISTCompetition Athelete

After a freak accident jumping off a rock into the Colorado River, Beth lost the use of her legs. With new resolve, Beth quickly returned to her love of skiing by enrolling in the NSCD Competition Program in Nordic and Biathlon. She reached the podium in the 2014 Paralympic Nordic National Championships and raced in the 2014 Sochi Paralympics. Following multiple surgeries to relieve nerve pain, she is back on the ski slopes in a sit ski, with the goal of racing in alpine eventsat the 2018 Paralympics in South Korea.

HALEY REICHERT AND TERRY BLUMParticipant and Volunteer

Since retiring in Winter Park, Terry has volunteered with the NSCD at the therapeutic horse riding center, as a volunteer ski instructor and for special events. One of Terry’s favorite participants is Haley Reichert, whose cerebral palsy impacts her mobility and verbal communication. Still, her smile radiates while in a sit ski with Terry on the tether or when riding a horse with Terry holding the reins. He loves getting to know the participants and their families and most of all seeing them grow and prosper.

“Even with the NSCD in my retirement plan before retiring to Winter Park, I never imagined how volunteering would exceed my expectations.” Terry Blum

“There comes a point when you just can’t look back. You can’t dwell on what was. You just have to look forward.” Beth Requist

DANIEL LIDVALL AND CINNAMONParticipant and Therapy Dog

Trained at Guide Dogs for the Blind since she was 10 weeks old, Cinnamon joined the NSCD in January 2013. Her role is to bring happiness to everyone she meets. Cinnamon elicits smiles when frequenting NSCD programs and ability clinics, calms children with autism, stretches the muscles of people with cerebral palsy when they reach to pet her, and brings companionship to people in wheelchairs. Cinnamon is a favorite of NSCD participant Daniel Lidvall. He loves Cinnamon and hugs her for hours at a time.

Track what Cinnamon is up to by following her on Twitter:@CinnamonNSCD

“If I could talk, I would tell you that I love each and every person involved with the NSCD… and who pets me.” Cinnamon

KATI LEASURE Participant

At age three, Kati was diagnosed with ataxia telangiectasia; a rare genetic disorder affecting the nervous, immune and other body systems. She has had progressive difficulty coordinating movements since early childhood. The NSCD’s programs are a vital part of Kati’s therapy. She skis at least 10 times a season, kayaks, rock climbs, goes rafting and attends sports camps. Kati’s family have dedicated themselves to creating a vibrant life for her and havealso been drawn into the program. While Kati is out on a ski lesson, her mother Jennifer is a NSCD volunteer ski instructor.

“I can’t thank the NSCD enough for everything you do for us and other children with the horrible disease of A-T. We are so blessed to have this resource in our state.” Jennifer Leasure (Kati’s mom)

There is no such thing as “too little” or “too much” when it comes to offering your time, talent or donation to support the work of the NSCD. When you contribute to the NSCD, the outcomes are immeasurable. This is the beginning of many more “Thank Yous” to come.
