President’s Report.

Thought you might like to see this image taken by Bert Rance in 1993 I was working for the Warragul Gazette as their staff photographer at the time, I am holding my award for the best sports image in the country press awards. Loved my job, how many people can say they are paid to work at their passion for photography. Thanks Bert for the photo.

Page 8 explains all about the Ballarat submission of entries, which we need your thumb nails sent to me prior to the July meeting.

I want to thank all the members who helped man recent exhibitions, bumping in and bumping out exhibitions, I thank my team for their work on the National. It is

because of my awesome committee and all of our members that the club is so progressive.

Gippsland Interclub Entries: We will need your entries into this competition also by the July meeting, conditions of entry:- the images must have been taken in Gippsland and matted, the external dimensions of the mat must be exactly 16”x 20” as the selected images will be mounted into frames for the exhibition. The

committee will be making the selection of 10 images to represent our club. Cheers , and keep snappingRuth

STEAM ENGINE A2 986 On Saturday 13th May 2017, thanks to our family, Andy & I were fortunate to join them to travel to Traralgon on Steam Train A2 986, on its return to service, after Steamrail volunteers restoring the engine. QUOTE Ït was saved from being scrapped by Greg Wilson & Warragul Model Train Club, with friends from Warragul Rotary Club, and placed on static display in Warragul. In 1986 Steamrail acquired the engine, and returned it to Newport, where it was originally built. Steamrail volunteers completely stripped and rebuilt the engine, a massive 30 year task.

The engine hauled a 278 tonne train with historic E Class carriages from 1910, and a modern S Class carriage from 1950, plus a buffet car. It left Southern Cross Station at 8am, slotting in with suburban trains to Pakenham to step a pace to Warragul, to be met by the Public, & Warragul Town Band”. End of quote. I have since learned that Steamrail paid $7

equal to scrap value. Although we were in what we considered a good photograph position at 9-30am, when the train arrived at 10-10am, a tall dark brick wall, and shooting into the sun made a good shot difficult. When the train left Warragul, volunteers handed us a printed sheet with the history of the train, and our family group of 4 generations enjoyed travelling through the Latrobe Valley, waving to all the by-standers on the rail side banks

Arriving at Traralgon, passengers alighted, many stopping to watch the engine separating from the carriages, to move to the turn table to enable it to return to Melbourne. Volunteers in orange jackets literally took to the engine, and the fire brigade refilled the water. Workers brought out their cleaning cloths and polished the engine, opened the big round door in the front to scrape out the soot. We could see some of the inside before it was closed shut again.

After 1&1/2 hours, our legs tired from standing, plus I had to change my camera battery, we sat on a seat to have our lunch, while the engine ran back up the line to check all was ready, then backed up to re-join the carriages on the centre line, up the track, change lines again onto the platform line. All this in between modern trains coming through, stopping to let passengers off, and continue on to Bairnsdale. Congratulations to all the volunteers who helped restore this old warrior to its youthful status, and giving so many of us an enjoyable day, when even the weather was good to us

Foto Biennale Fringe Festival – Baw Baw and Gippsland

(photo: www.abc.net.au,)

All club members are invited to participate in this exhibition which is part of a premier photo event.

We believe there is sufficient space for 35, maybe up to 44 images. Our preference would be for there to be no more than one image from any member, but if there are insufficient submissions, multiple entries will be accepted.

All images submitted are to be taken in or around the Baw Baw Shire, but do not have to be readily identifiable as Baw Baw Shire. (For example a tree fern taken at Glen Nayook, or Tooronga Falls would be an appropriate image.)

All images are to be in landscape orientation, and cropped to 2:3 format in order to print 381 mm X 254mm or 15 in by 10 in. Mat openings will be approx. 371X244 (the mat will cover approx. 5mm on each side) The image below of the current exhibition at the Mechanics Institute shows an indicative layout

The club will arrange printing of all images to a standard size, and then mat and mount them ready for exhibition.

To submit images for selection:

• Email a maximum of 2 image thumbnails (approx 1.5 Mb or 540 px X 304 px) to Ruth prior to the July General Meeting. Please name your files <imagetitle_author_price>.The committee will then review and select the images that provide the best overall exhibition, with a priority given to no member having more than one image selected, unless there are insufficient participants.

• If your image is selected you will be asked to submit a high res., copy and Pay $10 to Bruce by EFT to the Warragul Camera Club BSB: 633000 Account: 133712042, with your family name and initial as reference These will then be printed collectively by Roylaines. As a contribution to the cost of staging the exhibition,

• Prints can be offered for sale, but not from the venue. Prospective purchasers will be directed to the club website or club secretary.

(A submission has been made to the Baw Baw Shire for sponsorship, and we have confirmation that the Baw Baw Arts Alliance will support the exhibition with sponsorship of $200.)

Please note that the committee is not guaranteeing return of the prints, as they will be matted and mounted into group mats (6 – 8 images to a mat), and the use of self adhesive foam core will not allow removal of the prints. (Any disposal will be undertaken in a secure manner to preserve the rights and integrity of a member’s work.)

Further details of the Foto Biennale can be found at https://ballaratfoto.org/, and our venue is the Ballarat Mechanics Institute, which is also venue to some of the core program.

Member profile:-Julie Beasley

This month I asked Julie Beasley, to tell us a little more about her interest in photography.

My love of photography started when I was a little girl.

I remember family slide nights with our Auntie Mel and Uncle Jack who would take photos of us on our days out, or when we visited them on the farm.

I would love to sit quietly on the floor and watch the images flash up on the screen.

My first camera was a Ricoh film which I bought when I first started working, in preparation for my holiday to Tasmania. I became the family and friends photographer catching all our events and antics. Purely just snap shots, but I loved it. I have albums full of photos.

My love of travel increased my interest in trying to get better shots to share with family and friends when I arrived home.

My first job was at Momentum Greetings for 8 years. While here I had my first taste of working in a dark room, which was amazing, watching the image develop in front of my eyes, and manipulating the process for special effects. From there I went to work at Landmark School Supplies where Marshall Cock was my boss. Marshall would often talk about the Warragul Camera Club and I thought that I should join to try and improve my photography.

But I got married and we had 2 beautiful sons and Brendan and I moved to Wollongong buying a Take Away General Store for 6 years. Our third beautiful son came along during this time. Whilst up there I did a short course in Composition and Developing film at the Wollongong University which increased my love for photography.

Over the years I just updated digital cameras as they improved, nothing fancy. Our finances didn’t allow me to buy an SLR.

On moving home to Warragul I went back to work at Landmark before deciding to go to University for 3 years to complete my Nursing qualifications. This opened up opportunities to volunteer in 3rd world countries which had always been a dream of mine.

I bought my first SLR four years ago just prior to volunteering in Nepal up in the remote regions of the Himalayas. It was a Canon 60D which I still use today. I don’t have a big bag of special lenses, filters and whatever else photographers use. I just have my Macro 100mm, a 50mm fixed lens and a Tamron 18-270mm zoom lens. Just before going to Nepal I did a day course with Chris Bray at the Melbourne Zoo just to get the basics of my new SLR camera. The whole trip was just fully automatic and basically remained like that until I

bought a macro lens. Macro made me want to learn more and that is when I googled Warragul Camera Club to find out who the contact was to ring and join.

Since joining the club around 2 years ago, I have made new friends who have encouraged and inspired me to try and improve my photography. I am still a real novice, and have a long way to go, but with the help of my crazy trio, Rob, Tez and Natty, I am sure to get there with a lot of laughs.
