DefinitionsOff-Highway Vehicle (OHV)-Anysnowmobile,all-terraintypeIvehicle,all-terraintypeIIvehicle,ormotorcycle.

Low-pressure Tire - Anypneumatictiresixinchesormoreinwidth,designedforuseonwheelswithrimdiameterof14inchesorless,andutilizinganoperatingpressureof10poundspersquareinchorlessasrecommendedbythevehiclemanufacturer.

Motor Vehicle - Anyvehiclewhichisself-propelled.

Operate - Tocontrolthemovementof,orotherwiseuseanoff-highwayvehicle.

Operator - Thepersonwhoisinactualphysicalcontrolofanoff-highwayvehicle.

Owner - Aperson,otherthanapersonwithasecurityinterest,havingapropertyinterestortitletoanoff-highwayvehicleandentitledtotheuseandpossessionofthatvehicle.

Public Land - Landownedoradministeredbyanyfederalorstateagencyoranypoliticalsubdivisionofthestate.

Cross Country - Acrossnaturalterrainandoffanexistinghighway,road,route,ortrail.

Register - Theactofassigningaregistrationnumbertoanoff-highwayvehicle.

Street or Highway - Theentirewidthbetweenboundarylinesofeverywayorplaceofwhatevernature,whenanypartofitisopentotheuseofthepublicforvehiculartravel.

All-terrain Type I Vehicle (Type I ATV) - Anymotorvehicle52inchesorlessinwidth,havinganun-ladendryweightof1500poundsorless,travelingonthreeormorelowpressuretires,havingaseatdesignedtobestraddledbytheoperator,anddesignedfororcapableoftraveloverunimprovedterrain.

All-terrain Type II Vehicle (Type II ATV) - AnymotorvehicleotherthanaTypeIATV,snowmobile,ormotorcycledesignedfororcapableoftraveloverunimprovedterrain.Doesnotincludegolfcarts,anyvehiclespecificallydesignedtocarryadisabledperson,anyvehiclenotdesignedspecificallyforrecreationaluse,orfarmtractors.(DOESincludego-carts,sandrails,dunebuggies,etc.)

Motorcycle - Anymotorvehiclehavingasaddlefortheuseoftheoperatoranddesignedtotravelonnomorethantwotires. Snowmobile - Anymotorvehicledesignedfortravelonsnoworiceandsteered,andsupportedinwholeorinpartbyskis,belts,cleats,runners,orlowpressuretires.

AnyOHVoperatedortransportedonpubliclands,roadsortrailsinthestateofUtahmustdisplayacurrentOHVregistrationsticker.OHVregistrationsexpireannuallyonthelastdayofthemonththeOHVwaspurchased.AllOHVregistrationsarehandledbytheUtahDivisionofMotorVehicles(DMV).

Geteducated!InUtah,youthoperatorsbetweentheagesof8and15mustpossessanOHVeducationcertificateinordertooperateanOHVonanypublicland,roads,ortrails.Riderswhoare16oroldermayoperateanOHViftheyposseseitheravaliddriverlicenseoranapprovededucationcertificate.

Doyouknowariderunder18yearsold?Thatriderneedstobeunderdirectadultsupervisionwhentheyareridingonpublicland,trails,streets,orhighwaysopentoOHVuse.Thishelpstoensuretheseyoungridersarestayingsafeandfollowingthe law. Whensupervising,besuretheridercanbeseenatadistanceof300feetatmost.Thisallowsyoutogiveadviceandassistanceiftheyneedit.

BothTypeIandTypeIIATVsmaybemodifiedtobecomestreetlegalandoperateondesignatedpublichighways.Forfurtherinformationonrequirements,visithighwaypatrol.utah.gov/safetyinspection

OHVsusedonfarmsandranches-orforotheragriculturalpurposes-mayberegisteredasanimplementofhusbandry.However,iftheOHVisusedforrecreationonpubliclands,roadsortrails,itshallalsoberegisteredforthatpurpose.

Visitorsfromout-of-statearerequiredtopurchaseaNon-ResidentPermitforeachOHVtheybringintoUtah.Thesepermitscanbepurchasedonlineatohv.utah.gov,orinperson.Tofindanin-personlocation,visitourlistofpermitvendorsat: stateparks.utah.gov/activities/off-highway-vehicles/non-resident-ohv-permits/

Afterreceivingappropriateregistrationfees,theDMVwillissuearegistrationstickertotheowneroftheOHV.ThestickermustbeattachedtotheOHVinavisiblelocationasfollows:

• Motorcycles-Ontheleftfork.• ATVs-Ontherearofthevehicle.• Snowmobiles-Ontheleftsideofthepan,

tunnelorhood.• All other off-highway vehicles-Ontherearof

thevehicle.

Ahelmetisthemostimportantpieceofsafetygearavailable.HelmetsarerequiredforOHVoperatorsandpassengersunder18yearsoldwhoareridingTypeIATVs,off-highwaymotorcylces,orsnowmobiles.

Thesehelmetsmustbeproperlyfitted,fasted,andhaveatleasta“DOTApproved”safetyrating,formotorizeduse.Westronglyencourageeveryonewearahelmet,evenwhenitisnotrequired.

OHVsareconsideredmotorvehicles,sodrugandalcoholrestrictionsapply.Drivingundertheinfluenceofdrugsand/oralcoholcanresultinstiffpenaltiessuchasfines,driverlicenserestrictions,suspensions,jailtime,andevenimpoundmentofyourOHV.

RegisteredOHVsmaybeoperatedonpubliclands,roads,ortrailsthataresignedordesignatedopentoOHVuse.

AlongwithUtahStateParks,theU.SForestService,U.S.BureauofLandManagement,andotherfederalandstatelandmanagingagencies,areresponsiblefordesignatingOHVopportunitiesonthese lands.

Itistheoperator’sresponsibilitytoknowwhichareasareopentoOHVuse.Wildernessareasareofflimitstoallmotorizedtravel.MostagenciesprovidetravelmapsindicatingwhereOHVuseisallowed.Ifyouhavequestions,contactthelocallandmanagingagencyforcurrenttrailmapsandridinginformation.

Alwaysrespectprivatepropertybyobtainingwrittenpermissionfromthelandownerbeforeentering.

InUtah,wehavespecificequipmentrequirementstomakesurethateveryOHVisingoodworkingorder.Theseinclude:

• Brakesadequatetostopandholdthemachine.

• Aheadlightandtaillightwhilebeing operatedbetweensunsetandsunrise.

• Amufflerandsparkarrestor.Snowmobilesareexemptfromthesparkarrestor requirement.

• AllOHVsmusthavearedororangesafetyflagattachedindesignatedsanddunes.Theseflagsmustbeatleast8feetofflevelground.Off-highwaymotorcycleoperatorscanhaveasafetyflagattachedtotheirprotectiveheadgearwiththeflagatleast18inchesabovetheirhead.

Eachridermustbeagoodambassadorforthesport.Generally,thismeanslearningtosharethetrailswithotherusers,aswellaslearningtotakepropercareoftheenvironmentwheretheyride.

• Protectridingprivilegesbystayingonthetrail.Avoidridinginwetmeadows,onstreambanks,oronsteeperodibleslopes.

• Avoidridingoversmalltreesandshrubs.Trampledvegetationnotonlylooksbad,butalsodamagescriticalwildlifehabitatandcontributestosoilerosion.

• Alwaysyieldtherightofwaytonon-motorizedtrailusers.Whenencounteringotherhikersorhorsesonthetrail,pulloverandshutofftheengine.Removeyourhelmetandletthempass.

• Rideinthemiddleofthetrailtoavoidwideningit.Trailwideningisunsightlyandexpensivetorepair.Helpkeepourtrailsbeautiful.

• Donotalterthemanufacturer’smufflersystem.Loudexhaustsystemsareannoyingtoothersusingourpubliclands.

• Honorseasonalandpermanenttrailclosures.

• Whenovertakingothers,followatasafedistanceuntiltheyprovideasignaltopass.Becourteouswhilepassing.Alittlebumpofthethrottlecanleaveashowerofgravelandcloudofdustbehindyou.

• Neverharasswildlifeordomesticanimalswhileriding.Alwaysviewwildlifefromarespectfuldistance.

• Packitin,packitout.

• Washmachinesaftereachridetoavoidspreadingnoxiousweedstonewareas.

Byfollowingafewsimplerules,OHVriderscanmakecertaineverytripissafeandenjoyable.Werecommendthefollowingsaferidingguidelines:

• Alwaysrideincontrol.Neverattemptanythingbeyondyourskilllevelormachinecapability.

• Alwayswearappropriatesafetygear.Ataminimum,thisshouldincludeahelmet,shatterresistanteyeprotection,longsleeves,longpants,gloves,andbootscoveringtheankle.

• OnlycarrypassengersifanOHVisspecificallydesignedtodoso.Off-roadmotorcyclesandmostATVsaredesignedtoberiddenbyonlyonerider.Carryingpassengerscanalterthebalanceofthemachineandleadtolossofcontrol.

• Alwaysletsomeoneknowwhereyouaregoing,ortakesomeonewithyou.

• Ridersshouldbeabletostraddlethemachinewithaslightbendinthekneewhenbothfeetareonthefootrests.Theyshouldalsobeabletoadequatelyreachthecontrolswhileturning.Ridingamachinethatistoobigisacommoncauseofinjury.

• Bepreparedforanemergency.Alwayscarryafirst-aidkit,survivalequipment,toolkit,andsparepartswhenyouride.Don’tforgetextrawaterandfuel.

• Checktheweatherforecastbeforeleavinghome.Forwinterriders,alwayschecktheavalancheforecastbeforeventuringintothebackcountry.Formoreinformation,visittheAvalancheCenterwebsiteatutahavalanchecenter.org.

• Neverdrinkandride.AlcoholandOHVsdon’tmix.Thiscancreateadeadlyandillegalcombination.
