The HMY-Viking MegaDockBillfishing Tournament concluded onSaturday, July 14, 2008 at theCharleston City Marina with thelargest boat and billfish turnout of the2008 South Carolina Governor’s CupBillfishing Series. All together, 74competing boats angled and released76 billfish, which included 9 BlueMarlin, 4 White Marlin, and 63Sailfish in this World Billfish Seriessanctioned event.

Charleston boat Major Motion andowner Bucky Morris took home$65,832.50 and the TournamentChampion title. Major Motion’sreleases included two Blue Marlintotaling 1,200 points. Bentley’s Best,owned by Steve Deese of Lexington,SC pocketed $48,747 with threeSailfish and one Blue Marlin release(900 points) for a second place finish.Evans B, representing Macon, GA,had the busiest chair with one White

Marlin and six Sailfish releases (800points) earning owner ThomasMcCook the Conservation Award and$53,301.50. Susie Pearce, fishingaboard Dixon Pearce’s Sea Baby,angled the top Dolphin at 62.40 lbs,which was worth $19,669. Noah Rosson the Daymaker won the Tuna cate-gory and the team $28,690 with his16.20 lb catch. Jerry Broom reeled inthe top Wahoo at 49.00 lbs and$2,500 for Foster McKissick’sOverspray.

For the individual awards, HopeHanckel aboard the Major Motionwas the Top Lady Angler with oneBlue Marlin release on Fridayaccounting for 600 points. ColeMalphrus aboard Heavy Iron took theYouth Champion award with two sail-fish releases on Saturday, and theYouth Angler Award went to JohnMichael Kubu aboard HighMaintenance for his early Sailfishrelease on Thursday.

The 2008 Billfish Blast incorporat-ed several changes to the tourna-ment’s layout, including the additionof a mandatory lay day. In conjunc-tion with the lay day, several side-competitions were introduced to pro-mote participation in tournament

related onshore events such as a BoatHarbour Iron Chef Competition and aBloody Mary Contest, both of whichreceived strong positive feedback andshow great potential to grow over thenext few years. Also new to the tour-nament was the use of all video veri-

fication, which proves to be a muchmore reliable source of verification asto the fish species and angler’s adher-ence to the tournament’s rules andregulations.

Overall points winners were as fol-lows: 1st Place, with 2400 points,Gregarious, a 68’ Viking, 2nd Place,with 1400 points, Bodacious, a 75’Merritt, 3rd Place, with 1400 points,Cowpoke, a 61’ Viking, 4th Place,with 1200 points, Perfect Parts, a 74’Tribute, and 5th Place, with 1200points, Therapy, a 68’ Hatteras.

Top Fun Fish awards were: LargestDolphin, 39.1 lbs., Reel Joy, anglerSusan McCart, and Largest Wahoo,18.6 lbs, Nice-N-Easy, angler HeatherKimbell, and Largest Tuna, 105 lbs,Great Escape, angler Bob Henderson.

Next year’s invitational event isscheduled from May 25 – May 29,2009.

RIVIERA YACHTS INTRODUCES NEW CEO

Introducing John Anderson,Riviera’s new CEO.The new man at the Riviera helmmay not have an Australian accent,but he is immersed in leisure boat-ing.

John Anderson grew up on LongIsland in New York, USA, andbegan boating there on the family’sflybridge cruiser. He first took thehelm from his father at age ten.

It was a very early fiberglassboat,” John recalls.

John learned his early businessskills with Ryder Truck Rental, a$7 billion leasing company thatoperated throughout NorthAmerica. And it was throughRyder’s truck leasing division thathe made the move to the boatingindustry.

In the US, most boats are movedaround by road and we leasedtrucks to Sea Ray,” he says. “I wasa lot more excited about boatingthan trucking so I made the move.But I learned a great deal about afocus on the customer at Ryder.When you rent or lease vehicles, itis all about keeping the customerhappy.”

John rose through the ranks atSea Ray to become Vice Presidentof Sales.

I learned the basics of good busi-ness from the owner at the time, C.

N. Ray. That man had more charis-ma than anyone has a right to!

He said there were just fourthings you had to work on to besuccessful:

– Take care of your people– Make sure your dealers makemore money selling your boats thanthey could selling any other brand– Make a good boat– Take care of your customers

In 1992 Bombardier offered Johnthe opportunity to build an entiredivision of their business, buildingSeadoo jet boats.

I was given a small team to runan independent division,” saysJohn. “We took the first jet ski fromconcept to a complete boat in justfour months to show it at theMiami Boat Show. Then we builtthe business from that to a $100million business in four years.”

After a brief time with ShamrockMarine, which included rebuildingthe Rampage brand, John got anoffer he could not turn down – toturn around an ailing Four Winnsbusiness based in the northern Stateof Michigan.

At the time – 1997 - the companywas owned by a conglomeratecalled OMC. We built up the busi-ness and quickly became profitable.

Then in 2000 OMC went into liqui-dation and took all the divisionswith it, including ours. I had tomothball the business – right at thetime of the Miami Boat Show. It’sinteresting to go to a Boat Showwith new models and a business inliquidation – that’s tough!

Three months later Genmarbought Four Winns and gave Johnthe task of rebuilding again.

My boss at Genmar was MikeScruggs. We got on very well andbuilt that business to the pointwhere we were making more than7,000 boats a year. But Mike leftand soon took a job as President ofRiviera Yachts of the Americas.

By 2007 I felt it was time tomove on from Four Winns. Mywife Terri and I had a chat withMike and his wife. He suggested Italk with Wes Moxey at Rivieraabout opportunities there. I cameout to Australia for a discussion inJanuary 2007 and by March hadmoved out here as Director ofOperations.

My plan was always to work atRiviera until I was ready to retire. Iwasn’t planning on anything morethan the challenge of Operations atRiviera. But Wes beat me to retire-ment!

Slated for its premiere showing atthe Viking Yacht Company’s VIPMiami Boat Show Preview inFebruary 2009, the Viking 46Convertible promises to set newuncompromising standards in itsclass.

Starting with an all new hull andrunning surface, the 46 Convertibletakes extreme advantage of theground breaking design heralded withthe recent introductions of the Viking60 and the Viking 50.

Performance is further enhancedwith the inclusion of weight savingfeatures including vacuum-baggedend grain balsa in the bottom, lami-nated end grain balsa in the hull andtop sides, as well as resin infusedfiberglass fuel, freshwater and hold-ing tanks. HMY has specified 1,100mhp V10 MANs for its first 46Convertible.

The flying bridge is designed forserious tournament fishing, but thesocializing aspects have not beenoverlooked either. A pair of MurrayProducts helm chairs with teak ladderbacks and stainless steel pedestals isstandard.

Accommodations will include twostaterooms and two heads. The masterstateroom features a queen-size walkaround berth with an upholsteredheadboard and teak end tables, with

door and drawer stowage, a largemaple-lined hanging locker, an entrycredenza, a 20-inch flat screen televi-sion. A private head is forward andhighlighted by a spacious and size-able stall shower in the bow. Theguest stateroom to port offers the con-venience of comfortable upper andlowers berths along with the secondhead and stall shower. The availablestacked laundry center is located inthe companionway.

Taking advantage of the yacht’sgenerous beam, the salon is warm,inviting, and fully accented withbeautiful teak joinery in either highgloss or satin finishes. The layout out-shines anything in its class with a

roomy island and twin bar stools inthe walk-through galley. Counterspace topped with polished Corianhints at the sizeable stowage spacebelow, including under counter refrig-eration in slide out drawers. Otherappliances are concealed behind teakcabinetry. A plush L-shaped sofa toport has rod stowage below and thedinette is forward. The main backlitelectrical panel is at eye level uponentering the salon for ease of use andthe home entertainment systemincludes a 37-inch flat screen televi-sion.

Whether cruising or fishing, the 119square feet cockpit is ready for actionand fun with its observation mezza-nine. Topped with comfy Sunbrellacushions, the seating area also housesa bait freezer, stowage compartmentsand engineroom access. A tackle cab-inet, an insulated drink box in thesalon step, stereo speakers, indirectrope lighting beneath the roundedcoaming, gaff stowage, four flush rodholders, a Glendinning Cablemaster,recessed wells for fish and stowage, atransom door with lift gate, a freshand a raw water washdown systemare but a sample of the standardequipment list.

Featuring a robusthull with a beautiful sheer, a curvy,creamy smooth deckhouse withViking’s new teardrop window lines,a low profile wraparound flyingbridge and a 157 square feet cockpit,including a spacious observationmezzanine, the result is an excitingnew model in the convertible tradi-tion.

Ideally suited for tournament fish-ing, as well as long distance cruising,the new 57 Convertible will feature athree-stateroom, two-head layout forplenty of comfort and privacy thanksto the offset companionway, whichutilizes space to its maximum effi-ciency. The master stateroom willhave an athwartship queen-size walk-around bed and upholstered head-board, with stowage below that isaccented by rope lighting. His andhers maple-lined hanging lockerswith built in shelves will handle largewardrobes with ease.

A queen-size berth is the focal pointin the forward stateroom, but upperand lower cross over berths also areavailable. Your guests will feel likeVIPs when they take in the spacioussurroundings. The port side stateroomhas upper and lower bunks, a chest ofdrawers, and a walk-in closet, anunusual feature even in yachts five

feet larger. Both guest stateroomsshare the port head and this area, too,is sizeable and inviting.

The same philosophy is obvious inthe salon. Air conditioning, forinstance, flows from hidden registersbehind the window valances for bet-ter distribution and less noise.Carpeting is wall-to-wall with leadlined padding for sound absorption.Amtico premium vinyl flooring at thesalon door entrance prevents wet feetfrom tracking the carpet and also isused in the galley for easier clean up.The main electrical panel is locatedjust inside the sliding fiberglass salonentrance door at eye level and is backlit for convenience and to simplifyusage. The plush L-shape sofa lifts toreveal a generous stowage compart-

ment for gear or fishing rods. A hometheater system includes a 37-inch flatscreen television over the dinette,along with a Bose LS18 DVD/CDplayer, VCR and FM stereo with sur-round sound for maximum perform-ance.

The starboard side galley featuresCorian counter tops with Sub-Zerorefrigeration below in sliding draw-ers. Stowage space is abundant andfor cooking there is a microwave con-vection oven and a three-burner elec-tric cooktop. For added convenience,an electric sub panel controls all ofthe galley appliances.

HMY has specified twin MAN V121550 CRM diesels for its first boat.Speeds will range from a mid-30 knotcruise to a top end approaching 40knots depending upon the powerselection, load and sea conditions.
