IN THE ’50s, R.C. COLA AND MOON PIES WERE A POPULAR “WORKING MAN’S LUNCH” IN THE SOUTH.

SWEET TEA IS PROBABLY THE MOST TRADITIONAL SOUTHERN BEVERAGE.

IN THE EARLY 1900s, SWEET TEA WAS CONSIDERED A LUXURY DUE TO THE EXPENSIVE NATURE OF TEA, ICE AND SUGAR.

SWEET TEA IS MADE BY ADDING SUGAR TO BLACK TEA WHILE IT’S STILL HOT.

WHEN THE TEA COOLS OFF, IT IS SERVED WITH ICE AND A LEMON SLICE OR A SPRIG OF MINT: THE PERFECT DRINK ON A HOT SUMMER DAY IN THE SOUTH.  

THE MAKING OF BOURBON WHISKEY IS TRADITIONAL IN CENTRAL KENTUCKY. THERE ARE MANY SMALL DISTILLERIES IN KENTUCKY THAT PRODUCE HIGH-QUALITY BOURBON.

AMERICAN WHISKEY IS A PRODUCT OF THE SOUTH, MOSTLY TENNESSEE AND KENTUCKY.

PECAN PIE IS MADE FROM PECAN NUTS GROWN IN THE AREA AROUND LOUISIANA, TEXAS, ARKANSAS AND MISSISSIPPI.

IT BECAME FAMOUS AS A THANKSGIVING DESSERT IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY. PECANS ARE USED IN PRALINE CANDY.

MISSISSIPPI MUD PIE IS A CHOCOLATE PIE-CAKE WITH A CHOCOLATE CRUST AND A CHOCOLATE SAUCE ON TOP OF A CHOCOLATE CRUST, WITH VANILLA ICE CREAM.

IT IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE THE MUDDY BANKS OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER.

SWEET POTATO PIE IS MADE WITH MASHED SWEET POTATOES (BATATAS), MILK SUGAR AND EGGS, AND OTHER SPICES SUCH AS NUTMEG.

IT WAS PROBABLY FIRST MADE BY AFRICAN-AMERICAN SLAVES.
