THE ACADEMIC PROCESSIONIn colleges and universities, degrees are conferred at commencement exercises. The term commencement originally meant the inception of the graduate as a teacher. Thus, the term once marked an actual beginning.

The processional and recessional of students and faculty dressed in academic regalia is a traditional part of these commencement exercises. The history of academic dress goes back to the medieval centuries when universities were taking form. Under the jurisdiction of the church, those studying wore a cloak to which was attached a hood. The hood could be pulled up and over the head or thrown back, according to weather conditions.

Gowns commonly worn in the colleges and universities of this country have pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree, long closed sleeves (with a slit for the arm) for the master’s degree, and bell-shaped, open sleeves for the doctor’s degree. The bachelor’s and master’s gowns have no trimming. The gown for the doctor’s degree is faced down the front with black velvet and three bars of the same across the sleeves; or these facings and cross bars may be out of the color distinctive of the faculty or subject to which the degree pertains.

The cap is an essential part of the academic dress and it is to be retained on the head throughout all academic exercises - except during prayer. In particular, the cap is not removed at any point in the conferment of a degree.

All hoods are lined with silk showing the official color of the institution which conferred the degree, and are trimmed in specific widths with velvet signifying the degree as follows:

LEGENDPhi Theta Kappa Honor Society - the honor society of two-year colleges promotes the four hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. Students earning a 3.5 GPA or higher on at least 12 hours of college credit are eligible for membership.

4.0 Grade Point Average - students are recognized for earning a 4.0.

President’s Honors - full-time students who complete at least 12 hours of college-level credit and average 3.8 - 4.0.

Vice President’s Honors - full-time students who complete at least 12 hours of college-level credit and earn a grade point average of 3.5 - 3.79.

Academic Recognition - part-time students who take six to 11 college-level credit hours and maintain a 3.5 or higher.

Rising Star Graduate - a DCCCD program that provides qualified high school graduates with academic support services and scholarships.

Service Learning Program - a DCCCD program combining academicinstruction with active community service utilizing critical and reflective thinking to examine ideas locally and globally. Participants complete at least 15 hours of community service during the fall or spring semesters.

Veteran Graduates - a CVC program honoring veterans. Students are wearing red, white, and blue cords honoring their military distinction.

Early College High School (ECHS) - students who participate in an Early College High School program at Cedar Valley College.

Green Cord Program - a CVC program of three courses teaching the principles of practical sustainability. Students are wearing green cords. Students wear green cords during the traditional ceremony.

Student Government Association (SGA) - a CVC organization for students to serve and voice needs by acting as the liaison between the student body and the faculty/administration. Students are wearing white lanyard medals. Students wear white lanyard medals during the traditional ceremony.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

CEDAR VALLEY COLLEGE HISTORYCedar Valley College (CVC), one of seven colleges in the Dallas County Community College District, held its first class in June 1977. Since that time, the college has flourished under four presidents, Dr. Floyd Elkins (1977-1990), Dr. Carol Spencer (1991-2002), Dr. Jennifer Wimbish (2003-2016), and Dr. Joseph Seabrooks (2016-present).

In 1977, 700 students enrolled in classes for the fall semester. CVC’s first graduation ceremony was held in May 1978 with only three graduates. Persevering through the unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the history-making Class of 2020 hails with 950 graduates.

Cedar Valley College’s curriculum provides all elements of the comprehensive community college experience, including academic transfer and career programs, workforce development training for area employers, and non-credit continuing education courses. CVC has three instructional divisions that serve the academic needs of our students: Business; Workforce and Skilled Trades; Liberal Arts and General Education Transfer; and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Dedicated faculty, staff and innovative programs continue to create an excellent learning environment at CVC.

• Cedar Valley has reached an all-time high enrollment of over 9,500 students with the goal of surpassing 10,000 by the Fall semester of 2020.

• Since the inception of the Golden Ticket and Platinum Pass initiative, CVC will have awarded over $77,000 in funds to CVC students who were not previously eligible for financial aid Pell grant funds.

• Cedar Valley has increased its number of industry certifications offered to students in various technical fields, including Automotive Technology

and HVAC, with partners such as Snap-On and Fiat Chrysler.

• In March of 2020, Cedar Valley's Office of Advancement won the Gold Accolade Award in the Institutional Identity Program category for "Outside The Box: Moving Designs in Unusual Spaces" at the CASE

Region IV Conference in Grapevine, Texas.

• Cedar Valley is proud to be included on the list of U.S. colleges and universities that produced the most 2019-2020 Fulbright U.S. Scholars.
