Festival Coordinator’s Greetings

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I welcome you to the 41st annual BC Interior Jazz Festival.

As I begin my tenure as coordinator for the festival, I want to acknowledge the incredible history and reputation of the BC Interior Jazz Festival and all the hard work that has been put into it by past coordinators and volunteers. I personally became involved with the festival because of the fantastic experience that it was providing for my students, and I look forward to continuing that tradition to the best of my abilities.

Ken Burns stated that “By its very nature, no one person can ever be the center of Jazz”, and I feel that the same can be said for the Jazz Festival. There are so many volunteers that take part that I could fill the entire program thanking them, and still miss some. If you have a moment, and see someone with a festival name tag, please take a moment to thank them for helping make this experience happen for our students.

Our students are the reason that we’re here. These young musicians are taking risks and exploring jazz with some fantastic adjudicators and inspiring music directors guiding them through their musical journey. They express themselves through Jazz in a way that motivates me as an educator to give my best for them. I’ve been lucky enough to hear hundreds of groups on the festival stage, and their passion has galvanized my view that Jazz is an integral part of our schools and these young people’s lives.

Jazz is diverse. Jazz is exciting. Jazz is moving. Jazz takes both performer and audience on a journey through the soul and allows us to express ourselves in ways that words just can’t. That’s why it’s so important to keep Jazz and music a part of these young people’s lives, at home and in the community. Look at the dedication and work that goes into what you see on the stage and understand that it is the culmination of hundreds of hours of playing, practice and rehearsal by these students.

I also want to take a moment to thank our Sponsors, which include Wentworth Music, Beach Radio, Kelowna Events, the Delta Grand Hotel, Gorman Brothers, Yamaha, Power 104, School District 23, MusicFest Canada, Capilano University, Arts Council of the Central Okanagan and Intrigue Winery. Without their generous support of funds, equipment and time, this festival would not happen. Their backing has allowed us to create an experience that will be a lasting memory for the performers.

Personally, I would also like to thank my family and friends, who have been incredibly understanding in my first year as coordinator.

Enjoy the performances that you see on stage. This is the starting point for many of these students’ lifelong journey in Jazz, and you get to take part.

SUNNY WILKINSON FEATURED ARTIST

- 7 -

In addition to over four decades of professional accomplishments and performances, Sunny has sung with music icons such as The Count Basie Orchestra, Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, Clark Terry, Mark Murphy, Milt Hinton, Curtis Fuller and many more. With four CDs as leader and numerous guest appearances, her last CD is a duo project with pianist Tom Garvin entitled A Gentle Time - When Sunny Meets Tom. “The musical empathy that is shared by these two artists is truly extraordinary...Sunny

Wilkinson is at the top of her game here. She has spent a lot of time refining her craft in the trenches and now emerges as a master songstress able to get inside of a song and find its essential emotional core.” - Don Mizell - co-producer of “Ray Charles, Genius Loves Company.” Sunny has just finished recording a new CD and is looking forward to it being released in the fall of 2017.

Sunny has also made significant contributions in jazz education. She rejoined the faulty at Western Michigan in 2016 and is thrilled to be working with the talented students there. She has been on the jazz faculty at Michigan State University, Cal State Northridge, Fullerton College, and the Dick Grove School of Music, as well as teaching numerous private voice students. Presently she is the artist in residence at the University of Michigan. Sunny served as a president of the Michigan chapter of the International Association of Jazz Educators and the past chairperson for IAJE’s Women’s caucus. She also developed a mentoring program for young women jazz musicians called “Sisters in Jazz” that was taken to an international level through IAJE.

An inspirational voice in jazz, Sunny has a rich stage history, having performed at jazz festivals, with symphony orchestras, and at clubs and music programs across the country.

Looking ahead, Ms. Wilkinson is excited and passionate about continuing to share her music with audiences and students everywhere.

HORACE ALEXANDER YOUNGJAZZ BAND ADJUDICATOR

Horace Alexander Young is a 21st Century musician whose combined saxophone and vocal style revisits the sensitivity and grit of Lester Young and Cannonball Adderley, and the smoothness and grace of Nat King Cole. While he has spent most of his 30+ years in the music business playing,

arranging, composing and recording music for other artists, his focus now is on his personal artistry and mentoring the next generation of musicians. His personal intent is to leave a mark in both the domains of instrumental and vocal Jazz, as previously explored by Louis Armstrong and Chet Baker, and do so from a platform based on “the road less traveled”. Stay tuned.

Horace Alexander Young uses Vandoren Reeds, Mouthpieces and Ligatures, SKB Cases and AMT Microphones exclusively.

THE MICHAEL GARDING BIG BAND

Style is what this band is really all about. The Big Band era goes back to the 1930’s and 1940’s. This was a time when North America was coming out of the depression and was ready to have a good time. Big Bands would travel around the country filling ballrooms and dance halls. This happy, upbeat music got people out of their chairs and up on the dance floor. The infectious rhythms and sentimental lyrics became more and more popular with the arrival of the Second World War. Guys and gals jumped at the opportunity to get dressed up and have a “night on the town”. In the last few years, there has been a resurgence of

interest in this type of music. People are again “ready to have a good time.” Ballroom dancing has become extremely popular not only as a recreation, but as a competitive sport. Swing dancing has once again swept the nation. Even contemporary artists such as Colin James have caught on. The “Little Big Band” was a huge success.

The Michael Garding Big Band takes things to the next level; this is a true Big Band. Right down to the signs in front, the Michael Garding Big Band holds to the tradition that made this style so popular. Crisply dressed musicians with an ocean of shiny brass deliver big sound with the power only a Big Band can. Whether you want to dance or sit back and listen. The Michael Garding Big Band puts on a show you won’t soon forget.
