Re: LR Project No. 8900-847
Dear Mr. Bardswich:
Please find enclosed the electron microprobe analyses for 104 selected grains from samples WCB-1, WCC-1/2, WCD-1, WCE-1/4, WCF-1, WCG-1, WCJ-1, WCK-1, WCO-2, WCP-1, WCS-1, WCT-1, WCU-1, WCV-2, WCKK-2/3, and DC-l to 4.
The electron microprobe analyses identified l chrome spinel, 9 ilmenite, 1 1 diopside, l pyrope garnet, l uvarovite garnet, l sphene and 80 rutile grains.
The suspect nature of the selected oxide grains was indicated on the indicator mineral data chart. In samples such as the above which contained abundant rutile, the very tiny, black metallic titanium oxide grains can be indistinguishable from ilmenite/chromite by binocular microscope. Only ten per cent of the tiny oxide grains selected from the samples were confirmed as ilmenite/chromite. The single chrome spinel and 1 1 ilmenite analyses have been graphed on standard MgO vs. Cr2O3 discrimination plots. The kimberlite and diamond inclusion fields are given for chromite.
The chrome spinel grain of sample WCJ-1 fell far short of the ^207o Cr2O3 associated with diamond stability field chromite. Ilmenite grains were low in both MgO and Cr2O3 .
The composition of selected diopside grains ranged from G.05-1.46% Cr2O3 2.2- 4.7Vo FeO, and G.13-0.76% Na2O. Mean levels of 1.4507o Cr2O:,, 20X0 FeO and 1.680/*, Na2O were reported for Group 5 Clinopyroxene (kimberlite affinity) by Stephens and Dawson, 1977. The diopside from the selected samples contained generally low to moderate chrome, low sodium and high iron values. Low sodium values suggest a crustal

derivation rather than mantle xenolith source. Discrimination plots showing the grain compositions with respect to Na2O, Cr2O3 and FeO are presented.
The single pyrope garnet selected from sample WCT-1 contained only 1.759-0 Cr2O3 . This falls short of the recommended >3% Cr2O3 recommended for lherzolite and harzburgite pyrope garnets. The composition of the garnet shown in the attached 'Gurney' plot falls between G9 Pyrope (high calcium/low chrome) and Gl Titanian Pyrope. The lone uvarovite garnet contained high CaO typical to garnets of crustal provenance.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call./

Attention: i Mr. Joe Bardswich; i Sfte: LR Project No. 8900-K47 ' \ Dear Mr. Bardswich:
35.Please find enclosed the results of indicator mineral picking of the 44 submitted till samples. i ;
A single purple pyrope garnet was identified in sample WCT-1. Several pale green diopsides (possible chrome poor diopside) and a variety of non-magnetic oxide grains (bot^ ilmenite and chromite) were selected. Confirmation of grain compositions by electron microprobe is recommended. ',
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.
