“Lost my mind, just a couple of times...” – PHISH

“Musta got lost, somewhere down the line...”- J Geils Band

Oh, the Israelites, God’s first chosen people. You know, my heart goes out to them. Seriously. The first reading from Exodus this weekend has the Israelites waiting for Moses, who is up on the mountain talking with God, and will (eventually) be bringing the 10 commandments back down with him. The problem is that it is taking a long time, and doubt begins to creep in. “Where is this man, Moses? We followed him all the way out here, in the middle of nowhere and he told us to wait. It’s been a while, maybe too long? Is he hurt? Or worse?” They are lost and afraid. So, in response to their fear and their freaking out, they talk Moses’ righthand man Aaron (or A-A-RON) into crafting the graven image, the golden calf, to give them something to worship, which understandably, does not make God very happy (see commandment #1). He’s ready to get his smite on. I can just hear Moses saying, “Ya done messed up, A-A-Ron!” Luckily, Moses saves them, and life goes on.

Here’s the thing, well, 2 things, I guess. First, it really is a challenge to worship, to love, someone or something that is invisible, and well, to them at least, impersonal. God wanted to talk to Moses, not the multitude. The Israelites needed some tangible object of their affection. Second, patience is not a virtue, it is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, evidenced when someone, or a community is living in communion, in lockstep, with the Holy Spirit. I know I can doubt. I can lack patience. I know it’s difficult to pray sometimes. I, who like Aaron know better, still put other things and

people ahead of God sometimes. A lot of this has to do with fear. So yeah, I get where the Israelites are coming from in their behavior. I’ve been there. They felt lost. I’ve felt lost. Maybe you have too.

The Gospel clears all this up though, with our (COUNT ‘EM) THREE parables this weekend. An embarrassment of riches for sure, although why lump them all together, I’ll never know, as each packs plenty of punch on its own. Nevertheless, the Gospel writer brings the Truth of God’s RADICAL MERCY and LOVE to us, in the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. God finds the lost. He rescues the lost. God is personal, and He desires to be in a relationship with us. He seeks us. The Father wants us to join Him in heaven, in eternal happiness. He is always there for us, ready to forgive, ready to draw us back to himself. He’s still waiting for us, patiently. Are we ready to be found, to be rescued?

We are all aware of the recent devastation wrought by Hurricane Dorian, particularly in the Bahamas. Many lives were lost. Property was destroyed. People are lost. Part of being Catholic is to respond to those who are in need, as Jesus did. For that reason, Archbishop Carlson has asked all parishes in the Archdiocese to take up a second collection to help provide both immediate and long-term aid to those recovering from this natural disaster. Catholic Charites of St. Louis will forward 100% of funds raised to Catholic Relief Services which is providing relief in hurricane-impacted communities. Please be generous with your gifts and your prayers. ____________________________________________________________________

Upcoming Events:

This Weekend, September 14-15 - 2nd Collection for Victims of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas

Next Saturday, September 21 - Kickball Tournament benefitting Marygrove

Sunday, October 6 - Open House in School for All - 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Have a good week!

The kindergarten class at Christ, Prince of Peace enjoys spending time with one another and learning. Whether they are learning about numbers and addition or learning how to read, they are excited to be together. Their teach-er, Mrs. Petry, creates hands-on learn-ing experiences that help the students explore the world that God created. In addition to academics, the kindergarten students learn how to work with one another toward a shared goal. A lot of learning occurs in kindergarten and the students love being at CPOP and learning!

Stewardship Reflection “Everything I have is yours.” (Luke 15:31)

Our Heavenly Father gives us everything, including the

chance to share in His eternal kingdom. Yet, like the

Prodigal Son, we are often lured away by the materialism of

our society. Do we really want to turn our backs on all that

God offers in exchange for a material wealth that has no

lasting value?
