The Holy Family December 29, 2019

Dear family,

Accessed at : https://www.pinterest.com/pin/156922368236585272/?lp=true It certainly was a long time ago, the summer of 1977, when as a family, the Dunlaps, 4/5 of us, anyway (more on that in a sentence or so), saw Star Wars, Episode IV, A New Hope, at a Drive-In theatre. I was almost 6 years old, and I loved it. Throughout my childhood, the original (and best episodes, in my humble opinion) three Star Wars Movies ran like a thread through our family.

I watched Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back on August 13 or 14, 1980, with my dad and my little brother Mark. Our sister Julie had just been born, and she and my mom were still in the hospital. When Return of the Jedi came out in 1983, we saw that together as well. Between my brother and me, and our neighborhood friends down the street, the 3 Buettner brothers, Chris, Mark, and Matt, I think we pretty much had most of the original toys, which we PLAYED with. Hmm, I wonder where those toys are now? I wish I knew. I still have a Lego Millennium Falcon in my Saved for Later cart on Amazon Smile. Questions I ask myself: Will I ever buy it? Have you seen the price of it? Will I ever have time to assemble it? Then what would I do with it?

The final Star Wars film in the original canon, Episode XI, The Rise of Skywalker, hit theaters a little over a week ago now, to immense anticipation (just like Christmas) and record crowds, it’s taken the world by storm. Have you seen it yet? Anticipating the movie, thanks to Disney+, I went back and watched all 8 of the previous movies, and the two standalone movies, as well as the new series available only on Disney+, The Mandalorian. I wanted to go back and revisit and remember the history of this family, the Skywalkers. If you squint and look, you can see a vague…ok very vague, similarity to the Holy Family. Imagine: “A long time ago in a land far, far away… “… see? Not so different, eh?

Know that whether you are a family of one, or a family of 10, or somewhere in between, know that whatever the size, God is calling you to be a holy family, like the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, that we celebrate this weekend. How? Here are just a few ways:

1. Pray together. Attend Mass together. Pray Grace before meals. Pray the rosary together, etc. Pray with and for one another.

2. Share a meal together.

3. Family Movie Night - you had to see this one coming.

Christ is born!

The Holy Family reminds us that no matter what your family looks like, no family is perfect. Even the Holy Family. Think about that. They had their struggles too. We can all take comfort in that. We do the best we can, and we strive for holiness, and to love one another. This time of year can be really difficult for many, as we may grieve the loss of family members, or maybe we know we need to apologize or forgive but we can’t, or we may feel loneliness or regret. Family time can be challenging, as we can get stuck in our brokenness, our lost relationships.

Nothing can prepare parents, family or friends for a child dying prior to birth, due to miscarriage, accident or other reason. The Order for the Naming and Commendation of an Infant Who Died Before Birth was created to assist those who are grieving for a lost infant, seeking to set the death of an infant within the context of faith, and uniting the grieving parents and family members to our merciful God. Based on Christian faith and hope, this rite provides parents the occasion to name their child and commend it in faith to the loving mercy of God. We will hold this Order for the Naming and Commendation of an Infant Who Died Before Birth next Saturday January 11 following 8 a.m. Mass in church. A certificate will be given to the parents during the ceremony. All family members are invited to attend this scripture service. Your RSVP to the parish office would be appreciated.

If you are looking to give that bigger, year-end gift to the parish or school, we invite you to please ask your employer if they participate in the Matching Gifts Program. Please note: the last day we can accept donations for the 2019 year is: January 5, 2020, as long as the donation is dated NO LATER than December 31, 2019.

Finally, we are still in the Octave of Christmas. As such, you are invited to make the most of this joyful time. Keep that tree up a little longer. Say “I’m sorry” if you need to. Spend time with the Lord, relating to him your thoughts, feelings, and desires, then receive what the Lord wants to say to you. Spend time with your family members. Don’t be afraid to say “I love you” when you mean it. Savor the season. LOVE your families. Find that JOY… the JOY of Christmas! Watch your favorite Christmas movies. Heck, just watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GWAQZiBi6U. It’s guaranteed to bring you JOY! “What is it? What is it?” you ask. It’s my gift to you. Well, ok, not exactly MINE. I’ll bet you already know what it is, don’t you?

Upcoming Events: Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God - January 1 - Holy Day of Obligation Monday, December 31 - 5 p.m. & Tuesday, January 1 - 9 a.m.

Saturday, January 11 following 8 a.m. Mass in church - Order of Naming and Commendation of an Infant Who Died Before Birth – see above

Please note: NO PUBLIC ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT ON NEW YEAR’S EVE DUE TO THE HOLIDAY.

As the Joyful Season of Christmas Continues… I continue to wish you a MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Have a great week!

January 1 Mass at 9:00 am

My name is Stone Cook and I’m blessed to be the new Youth Minister for Christ, Prince of Peace parish. I recently moved to the St. Louis area from Cape Girardeau, MO where I attended Southeast Missouri State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Psychology. I was born and raised in Kansas City, MO, thus born and raised a Kansas City Royals’ fan. I have a beautiful and healthy baby boy who is growing fast. We are happy to be at Christ, Prince of Peace parish and are excited to see how God is guiding us in this phase of our lives and how He wants to use me to bless the youth in this parish family.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Whole Kids Outreach Christmas Toy Collection. The goal of this organization is to create strong, healthy, and happy families in rural areas of southeast Missouri. CPOP families collected a variety of toys to be donated to Whole Kids. Many students enjoyed choosing toys that they had enjoyed in the past. As we were collecting the items, our eighth grade students shared fond memories of toys they had and were excited that these children in southeast Missouri would be able to enjoy these new toys. What a great way to share our bounty with those who could really use the helping hand. Great things are happening at CPOP School! Mrs. Hoormann Principal

After Care Help Needed!

Beginning in January, CPOP School is in need of someone to help with our after school care program. The program is run by one of our teachers who is present each day. We are looking for someone to assist by playing games with the students, supervising free play in the gym/playground, and helping students complete homework. This is a great paid opportunity for someone who only wants to work a couple of hours each day or only a few days per week. Our after care program runs from 3:00 pm-6:00 pm, Monday through Friday on full school days. If interested, please contact Joanne Hoormann at 636-394-6840 or [email protected].

Our Week Ahead At Christ Prince of Peace

The Parish Prayer Line

The Parish Prayer Line consists of a group of fellow parishioners who will pray for your intentions. If you have need of prayer or would like to join our prayer line, call Rosie at 636-256-9398 or email Connie at [email protected].

Stewardship Reflection “Wives, be subordinate to your husbands…Husbands, love your wives…Children, obey your parents in eve-rything…Fathers, do not provoke your children…” Colossians 3:18-21 Pope Francis said that families, through their life of prayer and love, become "schools of true human growth." Being credible witnesses of Christian love, especially that of family members, exerts the most positive influence on our children. We are all children of God, let us pray and love each other as God, Our Father, does for us.
