Welcome to the 41st and quite possibly, the last AADC Awards.

As part of our ongoing review of the Club, it’s relevance and the role it plays

within the industry, one thing became patently obvious – Advertising & Design

doesn’t go anywhere near far enough in encapsulating the depth, breadth and

diversity of the Creative Communications industry of today.

We are advocating a name change and will be putting that to a members’ vote

in our upcoming AGM on December 6. If you do or don’t want the name to change,

make sure you are there to vote. Details will be emailed and available on the

website soon.

And, if you want to be a part of the next and most exciting phase of the Club’s

41-year history, turn up and put your hand up at the AGM. We need you.

A potential name change is just one of the many initiatives we hope to be moving

forward with in 2019.

There are several free and ticketed Education events being planned for students,

young creatives, industry veterans and clients.

We are committed to doing more for women in our industry and hope to announce

a date and venue for our Women in Creative Services Forum.

We are developing closer and more meaningful ties with organisations like

the Adelaide Media Club, Business SA, Pausefest in Melbourne and Spikes Asia in

Singapore.

We want to create genuine networking opportunities for local businesses.

Everyone knows the likes of Showpony, KWP and Blackbocks Jamshop, but do they,

and Retail Ink, know about Floodlight Media and Merlin? Have Passell Media been

introduced to THEM Advertising and Nucleus?

There are so many great companies and individuals out there that can benefit

from each other’s expertise.

But like tonight’s gala event, these and other exciting initiatives would not be

possible if it wasn’t for the generous support of our sponsors. Many of whom

have been longstanding advocates and backers of the Club like KOJO,

KWP, NewsCorp and Adstream.

These companies, as well as our more recent and newest sponsors give their

time, support, expertise and money to ensure the Club is viable.

Quite simply, we wouldn’t be here without them. They deserve our deepest

thanks and support from the industry.

The AADC Awards is about celebrating great work.

For a fortunate few, that means a trip to this stage to briefly bask in the

limelight while accepting a trophy.

Many of the attendees won’t be taking a short walk however. But even if

they aren’t standing up on stage, they can, and should be, immensely proud.

The work adorning the exhibition is the best of Adelaide.

We know it’s great. The panel of judges knows it’s great.

But we must make certain the wider business community knows it too.

Peer and industry recognition is fantastic, but we want to do more to promote

the great work created by you, and our broader industry, to local businesses

and government departments.

NewsCorp have very generously agreed to provide the Club with $10,000 worth of

space in their print and digital platforms to that end.

That money won’t be used to just focus on celebrating tonight’s trophy winners.

It will shine a light on much of the great work done by you and your peers.

Unfortunately, there will be one person who won’t be standing on the awards’

stage. And that person is a student.

We reintroduced the Student Category this year, but sadly, there were no entries.

So please, if you work with students; at AWARD School, AdSchool, at TAFE or any

of the Universities, please make them aware and encourage them to enter.

Enjoy the nights, cheer on the winners, be proud of what we all have achieved,

share the great work in this book and with me, look forward to a great 2019.

The name, Master’s Chair, was chosen to acknowledge the

time honoured role of Master Craftsperson. No matter how

good an idea is, for a complete piece of advertising to be

great and effective it needs the contribution of a range of

individuals. The Master’s Chair recognises the contribution

of those individuals.

To cast a series of commercials each featuring aspirational, bi-racial central characters; an Ocean Scientist, a Doctor, an Engineer. For each Core face we had to find their younger selves tracing back several ages to their baby selves. The casting challenge was in the linear matches. If we could not find a believable match for a characters life story , we’d have to change the Core face and start the matching again until we could cast a highly believable group of individuals that could portray the very same person across the ages and delivering the same essence and spirit.

The Norwood branch of National Pharmacies reached its 100th year milestone in 2018 and wanted to make some noise. But with a small budget, we knew the best way to tackle this brief was with a PR-able campaign. Something eye catching, attention grabbing and shareable on social media platforms. And who better to share this birthday with the public, than someone reaching their milestone birthday themselves? So we found the oldest National Pharmacies member we could and made her #instafamous. We introduced our very own #instagranny. Dorothy (aka #npinstagranny) took over the National Pharmacies instagram account for 8 weeks. We created over 400 posts, ranging from her favourite products to shared personal stories including her very own tips and tricks to living a long and healthy life. Not only did she become a hashtag instagram star, but she also drew the attention of our very own Premier Stephen Marshall who shared photos of himself with our instagranny on his instagram and facebook. #npinstagranny became one big celebration with the average engagement increasing by 257% - now that’s one special birthday for National Pharmacies.

What does the humble pasty, spicy Italian salami and a vintage vase have in common? Each one of them could save your life. That’s because driver fatigue is a major contributor to road trauma. But rather than just telling drivers to take a break every 2 hours, we wanted to give them a real and tangible reason to pull over. So we enlisted South Australian towns, big and small, from all over the state to tell us why their town was worth the stop. As a result, we developed one of the largest customised outdoor campaigns seen in this state. 52 Outdoor sites appeared on country roads that gave drivers a tailored reason to take a break in the town they were approaching. Each billboard became as individual as the town itself and a timely reminder to take a break. Towns and their residents became advocates of our road safety message, while helping their local communities prosper too. It became a win-win for commuters and locals alike. Word quickly spread and towns began reporting a spike in visitation during the campaign. But more importantly, the very same week the campaign launched, was also the very first fatality-free long weekend in 3 years. Proof, that a sticky beak in Cobbler Creek, could one day save your life.

When South Australia’s oldest, most beloved bakery asked for some radio spots as part of their youth-targeted STARS OF SUMMER campaign, we decided to make instant pop stars of their 4 hero pastries, (donuts, pies, custard tarts and Balfours’ frog cake, a famous and iconic South Australian treat). Our talent scouts searched far and wide for musicians that could sing, rap and emote their way into the hearts and ears of listeners. One in a suite of four 30 second spots, SNOOP FROG is a badass, green and creamy gangsta rap track that took Adelaide’s Summer airwaves by storm.

The SMSF Association’s national conference is the largest event on the self managed super fund industry’s calendar. It is unmatched not only as a source of professional development - with 60 highly informed speakers presenting 40 sessions over the course of 3 days - but also as an opportunity for industry professionals to network with like minded peers. We were engaged to develop a brand identity and event theme for the 2018 national conference, held at Sydney’s International Convention Centre. Titled “Beyond”, the brand identity sought to reflect the event’s focus on knowledge sharing, and preparing attendees for the industry’s future. We developed a window-like logo that suggests the possibility of seeing or stepping beyond our known world. It is designed to build a sense of excitement and wonder, while appealing to a professional, conservative audience. Its distinctive shape is taken directly from the SMSF Association’s own logo, providing a strong connection between the event and the organisation. We work closely with the SMSF Association to drive attendance for the event, translating the “Beyond” theme to a teaser video, and a broad range of digital marketing and traditional advertising activities. The “Beyond” brand identity was applied to a range of touch points at the event itself, including extensive feature and way-finding signage throughout Sydney’s International Convention Centre, a 90-second conference welcome video, the official program, presentation templates utilised by all speakers, as well as lanyards and various promotional items for attendees. In the lead up to the event, we captured the conference’s striking aerial photography from a charter flight over central Australia. The stark landscape imagery brings an otherworldly perspective to the brand identity, contrasting the familiar urban surroundings of the event and befitting the conference’s “Beyond” theme.

Working closely with The Detmold Group to create the branding and new website called ‘Cup & Carry; our brief was to simplify the world of customised cups and bags. Using the latest webGL technology we designed and created a 3D workspace for customers along with a guided modelling tool that walks users through from creation, to the printing of customised cups & bags. With design inspiration via the links to the Cup and Carry Pintrest Channel and technical tips via the Blog, the UX and offerings allow anyone the ability to bring their design vision to life for any occasion or business need. Underpinning the site is a robust eCommerce engine making the ordering and printing process even smoother, delivering high quality, print-ready files ready for production and order fulfilment.
