Then on Friday, October 12, Floca will present a program for teachers, librarians, writers, parents and lovers of children’s and young adult literature. The registraon fee for this event is $25 for adults and $10 for students with a valid school I.D. Both events will include a book sale and autograph session. The Author-Illustrator Program affords an excellent opportunity to hear “the story behind the story” from prominent writers and illustrators of literature for children and young adults. Some notable names in the field of literature who have been featured during these annual programs have included: Rosemary Wells, Gene Yang, David Adler, Katherine Paterson, Linda Sue Park, Avi, Jack Gantos, Patricia and Fred McKissack, and Richard Peck. The East Baton Rouge Parish Library is proud to present author and illustrator

About

Brian Floca

Brian Floca is the author/illustrator and illustrator of numerous award-winning books for children, including Locomotive,

winner of the 2014 Caldecott Medal, a Robert F. Sibert Honor Book, an Orbis Pictus

Honor Book, a New York Times 10 Best Illustrated Books of the Year selection and a

New York Times bestseller; Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11, a Sibert Honor Book,

New York Times 10 Best Illustrated Books of the Year selection and Society of Illustrators silver medal winner; Lightship, a Sibert Honor Book and a Booklist "Top of the List" picture

book; and The Racecar Alphabet, an ALA Notable Children's Book and

a Kirkus Reviews Editor's Choice.

Floca has illustrated Avi's graphic novel City of Light, City of Dark, plus the recently-

released Old Wolf, as well as his Poppy series, which won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award

for the first installment of the series. Other works illustrated by Floca include Ballet for

Martha: Making Appalachian Spring by Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan, which is a Sibert Honor Book, winner of the NCTE Orbis

Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children and an IBBY Honor Book;

Elizabeth, Queen of the Seas by Lynne Cox; Princess Cora and the Crocodile by

Laura Amy Schlitz, the recent Hawk Rising by Maria Gianferrari and more.

Floca has spent summers painting billboards, answering telephones and checking student identification cards part-time at the Harvard University Office of Career Services, and has

taught continuing education and undergraduate classes at the School of Visual Arts.

He currently writes and illustrates full-time.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Library’s Author-Illustrator Program was founded in 1978 by Dr. Patsy H. Perritt, former professor in the

Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Library & Information Science; John Richard, former Library Director; and Dianne Brady,

former head of Children’s Services. The list of featured speakers over the years includes some

of the finest authors and the most notable artists in children’s literature:

A selection of Brian Floca’s books will be available for purchase during the program. Mr. Floca has agreed to sign these books, however, we regret that books from libraries or personal collections cannot be autographed.
