During a 1977 summer saxophone confer-ence in Brussels, then-Chief Musician Dale Underwood performed “Concertante” by Clare Grundman with the Royal symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides, conducted by the U.s. navy Band’s leader, Cmdr. ned Muffley. Later in the conference, Muffley dis-cussed the possibility of hosting the band’s own symposium. after some consideration, Muffley turned to Underwood and said, “We can do this and do it better.” In that moment the United states navy Band International saxophone symposium was born. every year, both classical and jazz saxophon-ists are invited to perform with the navy Band.

Soloist, researcher and pedagogue claude delangle, one of the greatest contemporary saxophonists, stands out as the master of the French sax-ophone. A renowned interpreter of traditional repertoire, he has also en-couraged the creation of new works by collaborating with prominent composers, including Berio, Boulez, Takemitsu and Piazzolla, while also promoting the younger generation of composers. Since 1986, he has performed with the Ensemble inter-contemporain. He has appeared as a soloist with prestigious orchestras world-wide, including the London BBC, Radio France, Radio of Finland, WDR Köln, Berlin Philharmonic and Kioi Tokyo, and has worked with conductors such as D. Robertson, P. Eötvös, K. Nagano, E.P. Salonen, Miung Wung Chung, G. Bernstein and many others.Passionate about the instrument, Delangle seeks to expand his knowledge of the saxophone at the Musical Acoustic Laboratories of the University of Paris. His acoustical re-search is, for him, a precious asset when collaborating with composers.His recordings for BIS, Deutsche Grammophon, Harmonia Mundi, Erato and Verany help promote French music while broadening mu-sical horizons, from the repertoire created by the brilliant Adolphe Sax to the avant-garde. After obtaining several outstand-ing Premiers Prix at the Paris Conservatory, Delangle was appoint-ed professor there in 1988, where he has created the most prestigious saxophone studio in the world.

dale W. underwood is professor at the Frost School of Music. An active performer for nearly five decades, he has developed a world renowned reputation as a phenomenal saxo-phone soloist and a teacher. Hailing from Cortland, New York, Underwood began playing the saxophone at 9 years old. Underwood entered the prestigious U.S. Navy Concert Band as second alto saxophonist in 1968 and was promoted to principal sax-ophonist and designated as a tour soloist within 6 months. At age 20 on his first tour, he was not only the youngest bandmember at the time, but also one of the youngest tour so-loists in the history of military ensem-bles. After serving as a tour soloist for the next 28 years, Underwood likely also became the longest-serving soloist in the military bands and the most-heard saxophonist in the histo-ry of the instrument. He retired from the U.S. Navy and U.S. Navy Band as a master chief musician after 30 years of service.Underwood has performed in 49 of the 50 states and many coun-tries across the world including Canada, Cuba, Brazil, England, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Sweden, Italy and China. His audiences have included seven U.S. presidents, countless other dignitar-ies and even the pope. In 1978 Underwood started the International Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, which has developed into a large conference attracting thousands of saxophone enthusi-

To date he has appeared with over forty of the world's top orchestras and wind ensembles in 20 coun-tries, and he has the distinction of being the second saxophone solo-ist to appear in the 120-year histo-ry of the London Proms concerts. Multiple Grammy Award nominee, Guggenheim Fellow and MacArthur Fellow miguel zenon is one of few musicians who has masterfully bal-anced and blended the often con-tradictory poles of innovation and tradition. Widely considered one of the most groundbreaking and influ-ential saxophonists of his generation, he has developed a unique voice as a composer and as a conceptualist, concentrating his efforts on per-fecting a fine mix of Latin American Folkloric Music and Jazz.Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Zenon has released ten record-ings, including “Tipico” (2017) and the Grammy-nominated “Identitites Are Changeable” (2014). In addition, he topped both the Jazz Artist of the Year and Alto Saxophonist catego-ries on the 2104 Jazz Times Critics Poll and was selected in 2015 as Alto Saxophonist of the Year by the Jazz Journalist Association. As a composer he has been com-missioned by SFJAZZ, The New York State Council for the Arts, Chamber Music America, Logan Center for The Arts, the Hyde Park Jazz Festival, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, Jazz Reach, Peak Performances, PRISM Quartet and many others. Zenon has given hundreds of lec-tures and master classes at institu-tions around the world, and is a fac-ulty member at The New England Conservatory of Music. In 2011 he founded Caravana Cultural, a pro-gram which presents free-of-charge jazz concerts in rural areas of Puerto Rico.
